What Are Some Expensive Headphones I Can Buy? (1 Viewer)

How expensive are you talking? In the ear or outside? Is the person an athlete who's going to run with them or someone who uses them on their commute, light walking, airplane, studying, etc.?

expensive is a relative term. how much do you want to spend?

Grado SR80s are about 100$ and very nice.

If you want that noise canceling mumbo jumbo, i can't help.

for in-ear, Shure makes some good ones that act like earplugs

for over-the-ear cans, Sennheiser or Sony Studio Monitor

If you're buying them for someone active to wear when running or to the gym I recommend the Bang & Olfusen wrap around ones. I have a pair and the sound is great. They never fall off and have a good look. I bought mine in Denmark where they are cheaper but I think they run $180 or so.

For travel or at home, I recommend the Bose noise canceling ones. Great for those long flights where small children are on board or you just don't want to be disturbed.

:moneybag: Huge fan of the Sennheisers if you can swing the coin. A bud of mine has a pair of the 600s. Not cheap but musical and accurate. I had a pair of the low-end Sony Monitors for years and loved them as well until the ear cushions finally disintegrated.

 Sennheiser is the King of Headphones

HD-600s on Amazon for about $260.

Have a pair of Sennsies myself. Great headphone. I think mine were around 2 bills or so, but can't remember, In that range, great choice.FWIW, I am a bit of an audiophile. Huge fan of listening to music as it sounds/would sound live. HATE when a system / speaker (which a headphone is) "makes something sound better" (see, BOSE), because you don't make sound better, you just accurately play it. Neutral is not boring when the actual music is good. While its good even listening to the Sennheisers on say, my laptop, to listen to my full system on them, rules.

If you are getting noise cancelling, I wouldn't waste money on Bose, get a pair of these, just as good and will save you $100-150:

Audio Technica

ETA - a big plus with these is the headphones still work when your battery dies, whereas the Bose will not.

:goodposting: :goodposting: I've had the 555's for about a year now. Absolutely love them. Anyway, what are you looking to use these for? If you're talking about using a MP3 player stick with the Shure headphones already suggested here. You'd need an amp to get decent sound out of most quality headphones with a Zune/iPod/Zen.

I just bought a pair of HD555 on sale at Amazon for $69 shipped. Great headphones, but then I did the mod (removing the tape behind the driver) and they were even better. There is a Youtube video (search HD555 mod) and it took about 10 minutes. The HD555 has the same driver as the $150 HD595.

how are these in areas with loud noise like an airplane?

Picked up a pair of Sennheiser cans a few years ago (not sure what model -- it's been a while). Big fan. Stellar for the price.

I haven't used them but they'd probably be too loud since they are open phones. The HD280's are closed and I've read they have the same drivers as the 555 and 595. Those should be good for most people on a plane but if you want to step up to actual noise canceling it's going to cost about $100+ more. The PXC350 is $238 on Amazon.

I have the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro's (over the ear). I got them just about 2 years ago now (Christmas gift in 2008). I've used them on an airplane with no issue, they did a fine job of drowning out the noise. They're kinda bulky, but I like them a lot - no complaints. Then again, I'm not an audiophile, I just listen to a lot of music. They look to be selling for $90-100 right now.

Mine did not come with a case, but like I said, I got them 2 years ago. I do not have a case.

They seem pretty sturdy. Cant wait to try em out.
They've held up pretty well, even though I usually just toss them in my bookbag when I carry them from place to place. The padding on the top of the head recently fell off - but I manually fixed it. This happened within the last week.

This looks like the exact model I've got. Love these.

If you need something that works for the TV, PS3, Xbox, anything with an optical input then I would suggest the turtle beach x41s. 7.1 wireless. I love mine.

They are $67 now.

I took my first foray into the world of high end headphones with a pair of Ultrasone Pro 750 when they were on sale on Amazon for $175. I was very happy with my Sennheiser HD555 but wanted to try a pair of closed end headphones and the reviews are most fantastic for these. The sound amazing, the biggest difference being the detail of the sound - night and day from my open ended 555's. That said, it does take some getting used to since these don't have the 'soundstage' of the 555's and aren't as light and comfortable. Love the sound though (after a little break in since they sound like crap at first). They definitely excel at techno music and due to their design they don't hurt your ears after listening a long time.
