Tell you what I wouldnt mind seeing them do is draft a solid lineman to play that RG or RT position. Kaszur, Hochstein, Bates and Neal have performed well, but if they were able to find another Logan Mankins in this draft, Id be all for it. I really doubt it wouldnt happen in the 7 slot, but maybe if they trade down. Probably not going to happen, but you cant have enough studs in the trenches.
I would totally agree, but I think they need to address the defense --- offense looked pretty good. Defense was excellent, but could've been better, and it looks like Samuel might be gone. Plus, I'm not sure how much money they'd really have to be able to sign anyone, so you'd want some cheap draft talent. As mentioned earlier, might be cool to trade down if they like someone lower, and nab a future pick.

*drool* Having a RG or RT who plays like Mankins would be epic. Good God, our O-line is already one of the top units...

Ive learned simply not to sweat what NE's gonna do in the draft. Ever. Sure, last year they really didnt have a stellar draft on paper in terms of incoming college talent, but in general terms, its one of the best offseason I can recall any team ever having. They wont let any of us down in '08. Not a doubt in my mind. I worry about those guys about as much as my Mom worries about me grabbing a 2nd plate at Thanksgiving. Not much.

The other thing is to never be surprised by anything they do. No matter how much you follow them you just never know what they'll do until they do it. Outside of going QB anything is possible with that pick.

Hey, B. Did you see anything out of any one of those 3 Ohio State kids in that game last night? Gholston, Laurinaitis and Jenkins? I was extremely disappointed by really not seeing any plays being made over there. Little animal couldnt cover and didnt really show much. Gholston was just rushing the passer for the most part, so he didnt really make an impact. And Malcom Jenkins? I had those 3 on the short list. Now, not so much. I really like Gholston, his size, his pressure skils, but I dont know if he has the versatility or flexibility to play outside in the 3-4. thoughts there?

I was watching the LBs a lot and agree with what you saw (especially with the Road Warrior's kid). As I stated above I'll believe the Patriots will take a LB early when I see it. I just think what a BB defense needs their LBs to do is incredibly difficult to do from both a mental and physical standpoint. I'm not sure a kid right out of college can make an impact in that scenario (as much as I would like to see it happen). That being said the position does need to be addressed as both Junior and Bruschi are aging and Rosie's contract status is up in the air. Somethings got to give here and hopefully it doesn't involve another Monty Beisel.

I was watching Laurinaitis in particular as well. he did not impress me. He was around the ball a lot but he was always a step behind and I saw him getting pushed back by the LSU running back at the point of contact. I do think the pats would take a linebacker with the number 7 pick if they thought he was a difference maker but I don't think one is out there this year. I didn't see it one in Laurinaitis. I have not seen Dan Connor to rule him out but there seems to be a lot of top notch offense and defensive linemen at the top of the draft. If the pats stay at 7 then they will likely bolster an already strong Oline or dline.

I don't think the Pats keep the pick. At number 7 in '06, Michael Huff got a contract worth $22.5 mil with $15 million in guaranteed money. In '07, Adrian Peterson got $17 million in guaranteed money. Contracts along those lines for unproven players don't fit into the Pioli/Belichik ideal. I would look for a deal for either a late first or completely out of the 1st round, maybe get a 1st next year.

Of course, should they keep the pick they need help at corner. You can never have too many DL or too many corners.

it sort of makes sense that they go LB'er but BB likes veteran players that he can get via FA on the cheap so I'd think they'd go CB or DL or trade down for multiple picks.

I wonder what Belichick will do with the 7th pick now after tasting defeat on the biggest stage? Depending on Asante Samuel's status, they may go CB (Aqib Talib, Mike Jenkins, Rodgers-Cromartie, McKelvin). I don't see them going LB here at the 7th pick. Perhaps a trade down with Dan Connor late in the 1st round??

Top 5 picks:

1 CB

1 OL

1 DL

2 LB

In no particular order.

Probably a couple surprise picks in there too - guys not rated high by most gurus, but fit the Patriots system well.

LB or DB without a doubt.

All the LB's other than Thomas are old. Harrison is also old. Asante is likely to go to a team willing to pay the man. Big holes in the D.
