The term "first day pick" has been used for a long time to describe a very good player who would most likely go in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.
Terminology such as "he has a chance to be a first day pick" has usually been a euphomism for a good player who may be looked at by teams in the 3rd round, or maybe even the bottom of the second. First round talent has usually not been described as potential "first day picks". They are usually described as "potential first round picks". For example, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie is more likely to be referred to by TV analysts as a "possible first round pick", rather than a "first day pick", since the latter is obvious. So for me, and I think for most people, "a first day pick" is typically used to refer to 2nd and 3rd round talent...usually 3rd round talent.
The question is, now that the first day is only 2 rounds, what does this terminology mean anymore? When analysts like Adam Schefter or Mel Kiper say someone is a possible first day pick, are they still referring to 3rd round talent, or do they now mean 2nd round talent?
Personally I think they should either stop using that term, or they should be more specific as to what they mean. If Matt Forte is a possible first day pick, does this mean that he's a possible 3rd round pick or a possible 2nd round pick?
