What does "first day pick" mean anymore? (1 Viewer)

The term "first day pick" has been used for a long time to describe a very good player who would most likely go in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

Terminology such as "he has a chance to be a first day pick" has usually been a euphomism for a good player who may be looked at by teams in the 3rd round, or maybe even the bottom of the second. First round talent has usually not been described as potential "first day picks". They are usually described as "potential first round picks". For example, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie is more likely to be referred to by TV analysts as a "possible first round pick", rather than a "first day pick", since the latter is obvious. So for me, and I think for most people, "a first day pick" is typically used to refer to 2nd and 3rd round talent...usually 3rd round talent.

The question is, now that the first day is only 2 rounds, what does this terminology mean anymore? When analysts like Adam Schefter or Mel Kiper say someone is a possible first day pick, are they still referring to 3rd round talent, or do they now mean 2nd round talent?

Personally I think they should either stop using that term, or they should be more specific as to what they mean. If Matt Forte is a possible first day pick, does this mean that he's a possible 3rd round pick or a possible 2nd round pick?

It means you can start saying "In MY day....."
 All kidding aside I now take the "first day pick" line to mean late first round (outside the top 15-17) to off the board very early in the 3rd.
I agree but it may take a year till guys like Kiper and Schefter realize that only 64 players are 1st day picks, not 96 guys.
True. By the time the draft rolls around they will have had 50 players (at one time or another) listed as 1st round picks...so maybe it won't change.

Maybe we can use top 100 pick as the new lingo. :lmao:
Sure.
let's practice it...Andre Caldwell is a likely top 100 pick...Andre Caldwell will likely be among the top 100 picks...Andre Caldwell's great combine will likely make him a top 100 pick...Teams will look at Jamaal Charles in the top hundred...Jamaal Charles makes my top hundred...Colt Brennan is unlikely to be a top hundred pick... he may be picked no earlier than the 4th or 5th round...ehhh...not sure it's catchy enough...

Technically, the term shouldn't be "first day pick"........since most of the picks will now be selected at night.

It probably means that they will get drafted on saturday the first day of the draft vrs Sunday the sevond day of the draft.
yes, technically this is true...but a lot of people on television and on football message boards are still using this term to mean 1st through 3rd round picks...

those people need to figure out how to say what they mean

Let's break it down:

- There are two (2) calendar days for the NFL draft; Saturday (Day 1) and Sunday (Day 2).

- If a player is selected on Saturday (Day 1), then they ARE a "first day" draft pick.

- If a player is selected on Sunday (Day 2), then they ARE NOT a "first day" draft pick.

ETA: If selected on Sunday (Day 2), they are technically a "second day" draft pick.

- Sorry I left that out.
