What does the "GU" stand for on all the uniforms? (1 Viewer)

Gene Upshaw was a stud.

Along with John Hannah and Jerry Kramer, the greatest guard in NFL history. I will always remember Super Bowl II (being a RAider fan) when he pulled and absolutely knocked RAy Nitschke into next week.

and then when he became head of the player's union forgetting about fellow players getting the money they deserved while enjoying a cush job pulling in about 6 milly a year.......a stud?

I don't mind having a patch to honor GU, but it's too big. Why does it have to be so large, both on uni's and on field. I don't remember Tillman or Taylor's honor patch being so large.

I don't know his exact politics, but I do know that the players thought he wasn't looking out for them, and there were many teams ready to quit the collective bargaining agreement because they thought he was trying to get too much for the players... that seems like a very fine line he walked, but when both sides disagree with you and still respect you, well.. It's a thankless job and he seemed to do it well.

The first time I interviewed him was in 1987 in St. Louis, when the Gridbird players (the Cardinals) were walking the picket line.

Class guy, tough situation, and one that I really think he never fully recovered from, in terms of the power structure of Mgmt vs the Players.

The irony is that this was just weeks after his emotional induction ceremony in Canton. What a mess that thing was, for those too young to recall.

A complete joke, replacement games.

Big--Small--I think we can all deal with the GU initials on the field and uni's for one season, eh?
