In short, food on the counter, beloved family dogs left without food/water, zero sign of struggle, break-in or foul play, and weeks of investigations have revealed no marital trouble, financial trouble, no criminal involvement and nothing to indicate a plan to go anywhere. It appears they were living normal middle class lives on one day, and were completely gone the next. Man, wife, 2 kids...without a trace.

Four days later the family car, an Isuzu Trooper, was found abandoned in a shopping mall in San Ysidro, a bordertown outside of San Diego.
Joseph McStay worked out of his home, designing and installing indoor water fountains.
Drug dealer.

this was my first thought. they're on the run.
Seems like the most likely explanation, but it seems incredibly difficult to keep this sort of thing from all family/friends and have no forensic trace of your criminal activities that can be found whatsoever after two weeks of looking.

"The average Rooskie, son, don't take a dump without a plan." Wait a minute. We don't have to figure out how to get the crew off the sub. He's already done that, he would have had to. All we gotta do is figure out what he's gonna do. So how's he gonna get the crew of the sub. They have to want to get off. How do you get a crew to want to get off a submarine? How do you get a crew to want to get off a nuclear sub...

nah. My guess is he wronged a drug cartel. They're running 6 feet under.
With a departure and no signs of struggle and with kids involved?

Mexican cartels don't really work to hide the bodies they leave behind. If this was the case their heads would probably have been sitting on the counter.

My guess is they were killed in Mexico. We'll see if/when they find the bodies.
With no sign of forced entry, struggle, blood, or foul play? The cartels are known for splattering blood, not hiring ninjas. They advertise their killings as a message to others.

I read an article on Mexican ninjas one time. There are only like three in the world. They could have pulled this off.

Didn't read the article, are other McStay's concerned? If no other family members are concerned don't waste the resources they'll turn up somewhere...or not.

Yeah, immediate family on both sides say they'd never, ever vanish willingly.

Three Mexican Ninjas would have been two more than necessary for this job. Prob what happened, but why?

Mrs. Mcstay's picture shows her to possibly be of Mexican decent. Their running from creditors and starting a new life in Mexico.
