What to do when players are undervalued? (1 Viewer)

12 team league, $200 cap, standard scoring, Phenoms league - GAMMA 30. Flex lineup, which is 1qb, 1rb,2wr,2 flex,te,k,d.

The first player nominated is Manning and he goes for only $34, which is obviously way under fair market value. I think everybody was very gun-shy at this point. So as the other top qb's get nominated, they go for slightly less than Manning went for. Brees, Palmer, Mcnabb, Bulgar and Brady all sell for nearly $20. Kitna went for a remarkable $10. The other QB's could be had for very very cheap. So what do you do in this situation? Do you over pay for a Brees/Palmer/Bulgar/Brady compared to how much Manning went for? or do you set the baseline at Manning $34 and move on from there?

My team turned out pretty solid, overall. Here it is, with percentage of cap in brackets:

QB - T. Brady (10%)

RB - W.McGahee (18%)

WR - S.Moss (5%)

WR - S.Holmes (6%)

FLEX - J.Addai (26.5%)

FLEX - DJ Hackett (4%)

TE - E.Johnson (0.5%)

K - Wikins (0.5%)

D- San Diego (3%)

Bench includes:

J.Campbell (1%)

Lienhart (3%)

L.Jordan (6%)

T.Bell (4%)

Miami D (1%)

Jacoby Jones (3%)

M.Clayton (4%)

R.Meachem (0.5%)

D.Boston (0.5%)

I'm in the Gamma 30 league also & have the opposite opinion. The QBs fell just about where I had them slotted at. In fact, 5 of the top 7 went for slightly over what I had them slotted at. The problem I have with paying for a QB is that after the first 4 (5 if you count McNabb), the next 7 or 8 are within 20 points of each other. QBs are also the easiest for me to predict, making a committee that I pay under $10 for, much more attractive than the 1 stud QB. It's also easier to get a rising QB on the cheap than it is the other positions. Last, by mid season, guys are using their suprise producing backup QBs as trade bait, & they come cheaper than the other positions do.

In that situation, you would probably have been best off getting Kitna, Romo, Hasselbeck, Losman, Roethlesberger, Garcia, or whoever and spending the money on flex/backups. Getting Brady for $20 with Manning for $34 is not bad though. Manning is probably more risky because he is projected at around 35 tds, whereas the others are projected at 25-30. If Mannning only throws 25 TD's it will hurt more than Brady throwing 20. Of course Manning could throw 50 and Brady could throw 40.

Your teams looks pretty decent. I would use Bell or Jordan as your flex though. If one of them does fairly well your team will be strong. Miami D was a steal. Their front seven should be awesome. Noticed you didn't budget a lot for tight end.

I wouldn't worry, you did well. BTW, the first player is usually a little low while people get a feel for how much to pay.

I would.

the thing I love about auctions is how you have to re-adjust the amount you have allotted to each position requirement. TE,K,D were positions where I had originally allotted 2-3% just so that if I had over-spent somewhere else, I could skimp on the aforementionedpositons.

Same thing happened in our auction. Manning went for $37, Palmer $29, and then Brees was up and I landed him at $22. Brady went for $21...and then the bottom dropped out. Bulger went for $14, and McNabb went for $10. Kitna was nominated for $4 by the LT2 owner and I bid him up to $5, and got stuck with him for $5 (could be worse I guess). Romo ended up going for $2, VYoung $3, etc. 10 teams, $200 cap, similar starting requirements as posted above.
