What would Indy do with #1 pick in 2012 NFL draft? (1 Viewer)

I was reading some blog about teams that might have a bad enough record this season to "Suck for Luck," and one of the teams discussed with Indy. But something the blog did not discuss was whether Indy would even conceivably pick Luck if it gets the #1 pick. What do others think? If Manning looks likely to return, would Indy want Luck? Assuming Manning's healthy and wants to play, you have to figure Manning would start for a few more years. I guess Luck could be groomed for 2-4 years under Manning, sort of like Rodgers under Favre. It would seem stupid for Indy to pick anyone else besides Luck, since surely only of the other teams with top 5 draft picks might want to trade up for Luck (MN, Miami, KC, Seattle).

Thoughts?

Considering the Indy is a franchise that expects to draft at the end of the round as a rule, and will view this season as a lost one because of a non-recurring factor, I can't fathom why they wouldn't either a) draft Luck as a replacement for Manning and/or b) ransom off the pick for an obscene amount of value elsewhere.

Indy doesn't just draft Luck. They sign him in March before the draft is even really being thought of. Indy drafts Luck with NO reservation if they get the opportunity. Regardless of what happens to Manning this season is proving his mortality as a player and vulnerability as a team w/o him.

a.) I think they would draft Luck even if they were offered a Hershel Walker type deal.

b.) I bet a lot more teams would be willing to trade up for Luck then that: Washington, Dallas, maybe the N.Y. Giants, Chicago, maybe Tampa, San Francisco, Arizona, maybe Buffalo, the N.Y. Jets, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Houston, maybe Tennessee, maybe Jacksonville, Oakland, and Denver. There will be no shortage of offers for whatever teams lands the #1 pick. Granted, some of those teams will be picking in the second half of the 1st round. Make no mistake though. Luck will be a commodity and if a team trades down, they will most likely get a Hershel Walker package for him. The team getting him, however, will probably come out on top.

Edit: I'm not suggesting all those teams would give a Hershel Walker package to get Luck. I'm just saying my hunch is that the majority of the teams in the league would give up a 2012 1st rounder, a 2012 2nd rounder, and a 2013 1st rounder to get him. Some teams would give up more then that.

They draft Luck and trade Manning for a kings ransom. At least that's what they should do if they had the balls to do it.

if they get the #1 pick they will draft Luck and the situation will likely work out similar to Green Bay. Manning will start 1-2 more seasons with Luck on the bench learning and coming in if the game is a blow out etc... the Manning will retire and hand the ball to Luck. The only difference is Manning won't retire then go to the Jets and the Vikings. He will simply retire.

The other possibility is that Manning realizes that it is impossible for him to continue to play with his neck injury without risking serious life threatening injuries. He retires this year and the Colts bring him on as the new QB Coach (would be smart) and have him tutor Luck that way. Either way, if they get the #1 pick it would take more than I could even comprehend in order to get the #1 from them. Indy expects to be a yearly playoff team and Luck gives them the best chance at only having a 1-2 year hiccup in that goal.

Why limit him to QB coach? I say give him the OC position.
