Next up: No Country For Old Men by Cormac McCarthy
I'm right in the middle of "American Gods" by him and am really enjoying it. I've also read "Good Omens" that he co-wrote with Terry Pratchett which was a humorous look at the appocolypse. It has sort of a Douglas Adam's feel to it so if you read and enjoyed "Hitchhiker's Guide..." then youll enjoy it.Almost finished with Gaiman's Neverwhere. Superb book.
Any recommendations for another good Gaiman?
Gaiman's collection of short stories, Fragile Things, is pretty good. A couple of the stories still creep me out to remember them.I'm right in the middle of "American Gods" by him and am really enjoying it. adding to list thankshad jury duty this week, so during the lulls, started reading...
Hell at the Breech - Tom Franklin
This is a really well written historical novel, set in 1890s hard-luck Alabama. Echos of Faulkner, Charles Frazier, Larry McMurtry, and Cormac McCarthy.
Highly recommended for fans of those authors.
Agreed. This may be the best book I've read in a while. Not over the top horror, much more subtle and in many ways more disturbing (although the action is picking up significantly at around page 450facook said:Duma Key by Stephen King.
Thoroughly enjoying this book. It's King at about a Bag of Bones or Hearts in Atlantis level. Not perfect (Shining, The Stand, It), but good enough. And MUCH better than Cell or Buick 8.
Just started reading Lonesome Dove again. It's gotta be the best western ever written.

Lonesome Dove is so good I can re-read it about every five years. I agree wif Bentley about it being the best western evah.McMurtry's other work is somewhat uneven, which is probably understandable; you can't be brilliant all the time. There's flashes of greatness in the sequels to The Last Picture Show and Cadillac Jack is a fun fun read. But he bogs down with annoying frequency in his musings about the evil and perplexing shrewdness of women, even if I agree with a lot of what he says.Just started reading Lonesome Dove again. It's gotta be the best western ever written.I'm trying to read Comanche Moon, but I'm seriously considering ditching it and just reading Lonesome Dove again.

In a similar vein (more memoirish than pop culture analysis, but same music based tone), I just finished Love is a Mix Tape, a memoir by rock writer Rob Sheffield about meeting and marrying the girl of his dreams, only to have her drop dead in his arms at the age of 31
It's got it's "getting dusty in here" moments, but I would recommend it to anyone who likes Klosterman or music (especially 90s indie stuff)
Meh. I'd read a lot of good things about Carrol, but this didn't really live up to my expectations. Time for a thriller.
Duma Key was great. It makes up for Cell and Lisey's Story. Well at least for Cell. For anyone that finished Duma Key and has read Insomnia and the Dark Tower series...Finished Duma Key this past weekend and really liked it.Just picked up Fargo Rock City on Tremendous Upside's recommendation.Duma Key by Stephen King.

That's what I thought. That sounds way cool. They had a nasty dustup on Day 1 at Gettysburg.Iron Brigade was a famous brigade in the Civil War. Mostly made up of regiments from the Midwest, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, MichiganWhat's that about?Iron Brigade by Jame Nolan

It's non-fiction?Just dug into The Audacity of Hope by our 44th President. It's the first bit of non-fiction I've read in a while, so it's taking an adjustment.
