What's the upside for Ryan Mathews? (1 Viewer)

It seems to me like the Chargers know Mathews has certain skills (namely home run speed) that Tolbert just doesn't have. I think they're still very hopeful he can live up to his 1st round draft pick status. A lot FF'ers got burned on this guy for taking him early last year but this year, he came at good value to most. He's probably mostly a RB3 but where's his upside?

And who's starting him week 1 and over whom?

Im starting him over felix jones vs the Jets tough match up. He can be a solid 1 A back, top 12ish, imo. He may be able to do what charles did last year while splitting carries.

That's kind of what I'm thinking. Not saying he's as talented as Charles but he does have the speed, the passing threat from Rivers and co. is better than what KC has, and Tolbert taking GL TDs should be no worse than what Thomas Jones did to Charles last year.

I'm starting Mathews over Reggie Bush and Mark Ingram. I think Mathews has upside of 100 yards and a TD. There's a good chance IMO that the Chargers get up on MIN and pound it out over the last quarter or so to give him a good chance for 1-2 big runs.

Edited for grammar.

That's what I'm thinking - Chargers us their awesome passing game to get up on MIN early and then go to the ground game - and they'd love nothing more than to give Mathews the chance to steal the show from AP.

I don't want to bench my RB2 for Mathews but I may bench my RB1 (Ray Rice) for him.

I have him in one league as my RB2 behind MJD but don't feel good about that. Went WR heavy in a PPR league. I just hope he can cure his preseason fumbling issues. Starks is my RB3 to show how ugly my RBs are.

Starting him ahead of Ingram, Tolbert and Addai.

K. Williams suspended, higher upside

Looking back at things it turns out I really screwed up.

Mathews is THE guy this year.

Not Ingram. Not Hightower. Not Felix.

It's Mathews. As a RB2 paired with any effective 1st round RB1 with a little luck at QB & WR that's a championship.

Credit to Waldman who called it.

To be fair, I think the mid-round home runs this year are both Mathews and Fred Jackson. I own neither and I envy anyone who picked up both.

Huh? Here's how Waldman had those guys ranked in his final pre-season rankings: Felix (RB7), Ingram (RB9), Mathews (RB13). He also had Mendenhall as RB5, Gore as RB6, and Turner as RB10. Anyone who relied on Waldman's rankings probably isn't doing too well this year.
Even a broken clock is right twice/day. There are experts and then there are experts who claim they're experts.

This is music to my ears, as I have Mathews as my RB3 behind Rice and McCoy :pickle:

Bloom was the one who really missed the boat on Mathews... was like Mathews had kicked Bloom's dog or something.

I got both. Mathews in the 5th and FJAx in the 7th. Combining them with Rice at the #1 overall pick has me feeling pretty good about myself. I'm currently 80 pts ahead of the pack. I know you're all very happy for me. :)

Well, I wasn't looking at the rankings, I was looking at his Upside Down article: "I'm a believer in Mathews as a back with 250-carry potential in 2011. If he stays healthy, I think he'll deliver as a fantasy RB1." - Waldman, 8/4/11. Truth is since I've been reading this article I've done pretty damned well (well, relatively for me), luck or not. In any event maybe I did not read that one closely enough because I passed on Mathews thinking of last year's injury history and that is looking more and more like a mistake.

Mathews has top 5 potential if he continues get the amount of touches he got this week.
Mathews is one of those guys, to me, where you hold your breath and pray he's not hurt after every carry. Not sure if that's warranted or not... it's just how I feel. McFadden is the other guy who is like that in my eyes.

Those are my 2 starting RBs and I feel the exact same way. I would honestly be shocked if both Mathews and McFadden make it through this entire year without a significant injury but if they stay healthy - CHAMPIONSHIP!

Was Mathews always dinged in college too?

I'm debating offering D Thomas or Wells for Tolbert as insurance, good move?

Addai is like that too. Mainly because he DOES get hurt after every play.
