What's with this trend of TV Shows that just copy a movie? (1 Viewer)

I know this isn't a new idea taking a movie and making a TV show out of it. But it seems like the last couple years have been littered with them.

Limitless

Lethal Weapon

Training Day

Rush Hour

Uncle Buck

School of Rock

Minority Report

Scream

From Dusk till Dawn

12 Monkeys

Hannibal

Fargo

I don't know. Maybe it's always been this way. Just seems like every other "New" show is an old movie.

I know! It's like all these movies that are just the stories from books and plays!

I mean maybe the producers or whatever think they have an interesting interpretation of the story that they want to share, but come on! Get an original idea!

I was going to post that the "Uncle Buck" TV show was from the '80s. But I wasn't sure if it was the '80s or '90s, so I decided to Google it to be sure. Then I discovered that that they did a reboot of the show (with all black characters) last year.

It was canceled after 8 weeks.

Any of them worthwhile or just disappoint? Lethal Weapon or Training Day?

We paid for Showtime and have burned through every series that last year or so need to find some new options. Think I'm hooked on the terrorism Homeland and Designated Survivor types.

May give Hannibal a run.

Fargo does not "just copy a movie", in fact both seasons are about completely unrelated characters (to the movie, with one exception in the first season, but hardly a main character)

It is not a copy, but they tried pretty hard to shoehorn corresponding characters and beats from the movie into Season 1.

I enjoyed Hannibal.  Pretty ####ed up and bloody for a network show.  Takes a bit to get the images of Hopkins and actors you are used to in the role out of your head though.

Other than the guy that found the money?
Felt like damn near every bigger character in the movie is in the show (not the actual character, but to the point where I went, "ah, that's Margie, etc..").  Sure there are new characters like Billy Bob's, but there are more than a couple similarities in characters and situations.

I would guess it saves on marketing since everyone already has some knowledge of the story already.

Because of the mindblowing amount of dough that must be put up to make anything these days, name recognition has become an awesome factor in getting anything financed.

Case in point, my cousin Kathleen has won 3 Tonys in the last decade choreographing & directing Broadway musicals. She has mounted a half-dozen musical productions, revivals & originals, in the last three years and cant get a theater on Broadway because all they want now are shows based on popular artist biographies (like Jerseyboys & Carole King), because of the name recognition and readymade song catalogue. So much so that her husband, a producer who imports legit plays from London to Broadway and cant get theaters either, has taken a job developing the kind of shows that are keeping his wife's productions from getting a theater.

TV's as bad if not worse - it's either showtrunners or name rec. The hierarchy is terrible.

Lethal Weapon has been surprisingly funny.. Thought it was going to be a One and done show for me but so far enjoying it.
I liked Limitless, but not many did so it was a 1 season and done. :kicksrock:
Fargo is one of my top 10 programs ever, and that is after only 2 seasons..
I liked the first season and half of Hannibal and then it went REALLY out there and lost me.

What's the consensus on WestWorld? I'm enjoying the series, but boy does it seem to get complicated.

Maybe I'm just getting to distracted with Thandie Newton running around half the show in the buff.

Of the ones on the list, I liked Limitless - I like the main character. I can understand if some people hate him though. Either haven't watched or have stopped watching the rest.

Also enjoying Shooter, which wasn't on the list but is basically a copy of the Shooter movie. But that last one might be because I like long gun / sniper stuff.

Just finished Westworld from HBO, and I enjoyed it. Not gonna rave about it like some of my friends did, but it was a solid show.

Interesting premise, gets boring and repetitive around episode 3 (crazy scene followed by mysterious roundabout conversation where not much really happens, crazy scene followed by mysterious roundabout conversation where not much really happens, crazy scene followed by mysterious roundabout conversation where not much really happens, etc).

But then the last three episodes or so are REALLY good when stuff that actually has consequences finally starts happening.

It's worth sticking it out as the last 3 eps are really really good, but honestly even if you skipped the whole middle of the season you would probably miss very little that actually matters.

12 Monkeys - Liked this

Hannibal - I loved this, I thought it was the best show on network TV

Fargo - Liked this

I would also add season 1 of Mr Robot to the list according to some people's reviews.
