Where would you go with this roster? 6 top 12 picks (1 Viewer)

Hey Gang,

This the 12th season of our 10 team, 10 player salary cap keeper.  I will not bore you with all of the details; the main takeaways are that it is not a dynasty, you might have to actually trade away players if you have more than 10 good ones  and the cap rarely comes into play unless you are just stacked with studs.  We keep 10 on active roster and can keep up to 4 on a taxi squad for 14 total keepers (assuming you keep 4 taxi guys to develop as they don’t count against cap) going into the draft.  This off-season we also move to .5 PPR.

A little background: I was stuck in the middle of the pack purgatory for about 4 straight years, I sold off players to build back through the draft, went from the bottom to the top in 2 years, and stayed an elite team for 2 more years.  Then it caught up to me and by week 6 it was obvious I couldn't hang with the top teams in my division, so I punted for another rebuild with this draft instead of being stuck in the middle of the pack again.   I made some aggressive moves; traded L. Bell for what I thought could be multiple top 3-4 picks and promising young WRs and ended up sitting here a month before the draft with picks 1, 2, 4, 10, 11, 12, 21 & 22.  I also wanted to mention that this league cycles the champs, I have picks 1, 2 and 4 and the 1.03 owner are the last two champs, so this is not unusual and I feel confident I can get back to top quickly.

Starting requirements: QB/2RBs/3WRs/TE/Flex/K/D

Current roster:

QB: Cousins

RB: Crowell, Miller

WR: Julio, DT, Maclin, Parker, M. Jones

TE: Ertz

Taxi: Lockett, K. White (not sold on either, but they don't cost anything to keep on taxi until they boom/bust)

Ideally, I would like to restock the shelves with young stud RBs, but Davis is sitting out there and the .5 ppr could come into play a little as well as my aging WR corps.  Ultimately, I think I would like to come out of the first 3 picks with Fournette, Mixon and Davis, but I think the 1.03 guy will snag Mixon or LF if I don’t take them 1st and 2nd.  Do I risk missing the possible stud WR just to nail down my top 2 RBs?  The way I’ve been looking at it, I don't really feel I can go wrong if he does take Davis, because then I’ll get my choice of the top 3 RBs in this class and could use the 10, 11 and 12 to go after guys like Ross, Kamara and Howard.

Ideally, I'd like to see it play out like this through these first 12 picks...

1.01 Fournette

1.02 Mixon

1.04 Davis

1.10 Kamara

1.11 Ross

1.12 Howard

If this was your team, what would be your best-case scenario coming out of these first 6 picks?

1 and 2 LF and Davis

4) Mixon with Cook as option 2

10, 11, 12) Foreman, JuJu, Howard (or whatever TE you prefer)

Against Ross and Kamara: I don't trust undersized players. I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority on these two but Kamara seems like a flashing beacon for a 3rd down only back. Sure these guys have value but I don't think he ends up as super stud. Ross, IMO, has a ceiling of DJax but a floor of Dorsett.

In favour of Foreman and JuJu: Both landed in better spots than it seems. Foreman is behind Miller but on a run heavy team that has said they want to lower Millers touches. Plus, Foreman offers something different in terms of style from Miller. I don't think it's unreasonable to think Foreman gets GL off the hop and has the potential to expand his role from there. While I don't think Foreman is an every down stud he could do enough this year to flip him instead of cut him next year. Especially if you want to package Miller and Foreman. Plus, if Miller goes down you are covered. JuJu is a perfect taxi player. He had a down year last year but was considered the top WR entering into last college season. He gets to learn behind AB and with Bell about to get paid the Steelers might not be able to keep Bryant. Maybe you have to wait a bit or maybe the Steelers trade him. Either way, it's hard to imagine them giving him a big contract.

Cousins

LF, Crow, Miller/Foreman, Mixon (or Cook)

Julio, DT, Davis, Maclin, Parker, Jones

Ertz

Taxi: Lockett, White, Howard, JuJu

I understand trying to build and adjust based on who you have already taken but in this instance I wouldn't force any picks based on position.  I would rank who you think are the top 12 guys in order and then take them as your picks come up.  If you think the RB's are better fantasy bets than Davis then don't worry about Davis.  In dynasty (even though this is a partial dynasty) it's more important to get talent than worry about a particular position.

Agree with Gally.  Take the top 2 players on your board, then take the BPA with your next 4 picks.  If Fournette and Mixon are your top 2 guys, take them.  Personally, I would take Fournette and Davis and who ever is left from Mixon and McCaffrey.

Just to pile on, I agree with the BPA approach and after your top two picks I think you have enough flexibility to go that way. You may also want to consider that guys know you have all those picks so some people may reach for a guy they may not otherwise try and get.

Fournette would be my top pick but I have Cook over McCaffery. Also, I am not a fan of John Ross and he wouldn't be in my top-12.

Thanks guys!

I have Davis and LF as my top 2, so that was my initial inclination, but then I started to (over)think about how it could play out with the 1.03 guy needing RBs and WRs.

One thing that could change this all by a lot is William's and his back injury news.  I would venture a pretty good guess that at worse, I'm probably 50/50 to get him at 1.10 now as a few of these guys have been snake-bit by Perriman, White and Parker the past few years and I think a couple will avoid him completely. I do like Ross in the long-term, but he is not going to be an instant impact guy, IMO.  I think Kamara is going to be really good and even if he is a 3rd down back or they put him in motion to go out for passes, I could see him being a poor man's McCaffrey at a much cheaper price.  I foresee him on my roster unless he goes mid/late 1st before I get a chance at him, and if TEs and Williams fall, that could be what happens.

What makes this league infuriating at times and a complete blast at other times is that you can't always afford to keep your good players..  Last year in the off-season I HAD to trade McCoy and Eifert to get down to 10 keeps and a reasonable cap number.

I second the bolded exactly.
