Which DBs Is Jene targeting this year? (1 Viewer)

For the past several years, I (and I imagine many of you) have had tremendous success by waiting to draft DBs and taking guys that resident genius Jene Bramel has identified as likely breakouts. A few seasons ago it was LaRon Landry and Patrick Chung. Last year it was George Wilson and Kam Chancellor. The predictions have been spot-on and have helped me win several league championships.

So, do you have a good read on who those guys are this year, Jene? I am a FBG subscriber and I can see your rankings, but I am not interested in the guys you have ranked in the top 5 at DB. I want to know what guys you are waiting to pounce on later in the draft--the guys who will put up top 5 numbers but who can be drafted much later. Who are those guys this year?

Well I'm no Jene, but I think I've heard him mention Jarrett in Phi, Quinton Carter in Den, Gomez in Was, I know I've invested highly in these three before and after hearing this, but in the past weeks have been trading away Gomez.

Last year I was high on Zbikowski, only to see Pollard come in and wrestle that away, but I wonder what thoughts are now that he's in Ind, is he the starting SS right now?

I'm also curious on a few other under the radar types, Nakamura in Car has some deep sleeper potential, but I'm not sure he'll start, and it's looking more like FS rather than SS.

Being a GB fan I was never a huge Bigby backer atleast not for very long, but could he be starting in SD?

And I'm not in love with Mays, but I've been hearing he might start...

Not as much under the radar, but I'm starting to like William Moore, more than I had in the past.

I think Packerz has named many of the under the radar guys I have been following closely. I'd also add Chris Prosinski JAX & Da'Norris Searcy BUF.

Dejon Gomes is finding his way to a number of my rosters, people are losing faith in Jarrett and he can be had cheaply. Picked up Mays off the WW this week in one league, Jarrett in another. Bigby, Nakamura & Zbikowski are on most WW's as well but have good chances of having the starting roles at some points this season.

From the DB Tiers update post:

This summer is more like the summer of 2009 and 2010 if you're looking for a sleeper safety. Last season, it was clearly evident very early that Kam Chancellor and George Wilson would be in the right opportunity and likely stay undervalued through August. That's something of an anomaly. It generally takes until early training camp for guys like Yeremiah Bell, Tyvon Branch, LaRon Landry, Donte Whitner, etc, etc to emerge as relatively sure things.I'm not willing to stand on the table for any "sleeper safety du jour" yet. Mark Barron fits the DB-who-wasn't-ranked-in-the-top-XX-to-breakout bill, but he won't be undervalued. If you're trying to stay ahead of your leaguemates, I'd roster Taylor Mays, Brandon Taylor, Jaiquawn Jarrett or Harrison Smith. I expect at least one of them to make the stud/undervalued safety cut by August. And I expect one unexpected name to join them, so stay tuned.

I took Jarrett last year in our rookie draft, but what happened? Did he get an honest shot?

What about four Green Bay? Do you like anyone to take on Collins' role so Burnett goes to SS? Peprah has been decent but do you see Jennings or McMillian doing anything?

Jarrett was something of a lockout casualty last season, but his coverage kept him off the field. It's disappointing, but perhaps telling, that he's yet to beat out Kurt Coleman. We'll see how camp goes there.Burnett will be the more dynamic safety regardless of how they align. Unless we see something different -- and hooray for coaches film this year !!! -- I'm not targeting anyone other than Burnett from that group.

Thanks. The new guys in Green Bay are young and that defense will go through a lot of changes this season. Burnett looked very good when Collins was healthy though and hope he keeps growing. My safeties right now are Burnett, Chancellor(thanks to you), Daniel Manning and Jarrett on DTS.

Amen Doc. It's like Christmas came early for us IDP kooks.

Any thoughts on Barry Church in Dal? I've had him for over a year in a league or two, but he actually might not be that far off from starting in Dal. I know all the hype, atleast on this site, has been for Gomes, but how about Brandon Meriweather, he looks like he could be the starting SS in Washington, atleast as of now. Granted Landry was more of an athlete, but he also showed that in that scheme that was a favorable position in tackle heavy leagues. What about Chris Clemons in Mia? I've been handcuffing him with Tyrell Johnson, but I think one or the other could succeed in Yeremiah Bell's old position right?

What are your thoughts on Brandon Browner and Darian Stewart? They're not even ranked on the Draft Dominator, but last year they were great for me down the stretch.

Also, my general feeling is to always beware of changing situatioms - don't assume bell's replacement will get his production in a new situatoon

wise words.Where do you think the value is here? All 3 of the possibles (Jones, Clemons and Johnson) are on my WW. Where will their scheme funnel the value to?

This is my feeling here. I'm not impressed with any of the talent and the front seven will be decent. If we learn that one player has clearly separated himself from the others, there may be value to be found. My guess is this is as likely to become a revolving door with multiple starters during the season as not. None of these guys are currently on my radar.

not sure if this really answers your question, and this is kind of off the top of my head without a lot of digging or expert insight, but I think the current value here might be dansby, and william moore in atlanta.you can probably get moore for next to nothing.edit: I forgot to put this in my earlier post, but I wanted to use tj ward as an example of a highly rated player I was leery of last year because rob ryan left town.so much of this is situation, you have to be careful.

No, it doesn't :) yeah I am all over Dansby as well, I was more looking at DB's like the Miami guys who in deep leagues I play in (53+ man rosters) are still sitting on the WW. I think your right about Moore, I have him stashed in a league or two as well. I think DeCoud is overrated and could lost his job by 2013.

A few names that stick out for me... all finished the season 25th or lower in one of my 12-team IDP league (starts 2 DBs, S or CB):

Bernard Pollard (S - BAL): Started 2011 season slow, but finished strong and had a 7-game stretch with double-digit scoring. Another year under his belt in the Raven defense.

Malcolm Jenkins (S - NOS): All over the place in terms of scoring last year. But you gotta figure the Saints team - and defense in particular - is going to in flux, especially early on.

Glover Quin (S - HOU): Or is it Quinn Glover? Anyways, I like Quin as a nice DB2 with upside this year. Like Pollard, another year under his belt in an aggressive scheme. Came on nicely after the Texans' bye in the tail end of the season last year. We saw what Pollard did in his spot and he's capable.

Chris Houston (CB - DET): Just 'cuz I want to include a corner, I guess. He may not be tested as much this season, but with the Lions' offense continuing to put up points, the Lion corners could see plenty of work. When Houston was on in 2011, he was on big time. Against the right opponent, he might just put up big points again in '12.

What is Jarrett's value in Philly right now?
Hard to say. We'll find out very early in August which players were truly hurt by the missed reps due to the lockout last year and which just aren't good enough to play. Nate Irving falls into this category, too. It's not at all a good sign that the Eagles currently consider Kurt Coleman a better option, but Coleman has disappointed frequently and recently, too. I don't think we can be nearly as high on Jarrett as we've been, but I wouldn't give up on him until we learn more in camp.

Along the same lines....Would you advise taking the same tactic with Carter in Denver? Or are you decidedly higher on him? (Can't recall where you have him in your tiers and too lazy to look right now. :) )
