Lawyer - This could be helpful in some sticky situations, getting advice, etc High on the list

Doctor - This is probably the least advantageous. With medical insurance covering most expenses its rather convenient to make an appt to see your general doc. Also, conflict of interest and such

Dentist - Not very advantageous. Whats your dentist friend gonna do if you have a tooth ache? Perform a root canal on his couch?

General contractor - could be helpful for advice and saving money

Specific trade (plumber, electrician, etc.) - see above

Mechanic - This one is HUGE cuz nobody trusts a mechanic

Accountant - Im pretty sure most Accountants HATE when their friends ask them tax advice

Police officer - I guess if you break the law. Not sure how he can help

Id say

#1 Lawyer

#2 Mechanic
I would say mechanic is number one because they not only can fix cars, but they are also handy for other stuff around your house too. I disagree with lawyer...my wife is a lawyer and she specializes in one type of law like many lawyers do...she gets calls all the time from people and can usually do nothing more than offer a referral.
That's a value in and of itself. I don't make a referral unless I know the lawyer can do the job and do it well. And if it's a referral where I could ask for a referral fee, I will just have the other attorney reduce their fee accordingly.

A good plumber and mechanic are your best friends.

I have a retired plumber who lives in my area is gold! Will come out on the Fourth of July and just charge 20 dollars. Said he was not doing anything anyway and loves to work.

As someone who dated a lawyer for 3+ years and got to know all her lawyer friend, I'd say lawyer is not high on the list. Most lawyers specialize in a specific areas, many of which aren't useful to most of us.

I'd go with mechanic.

You forgot to mention that many of them are insufferable tools.

I would expect that most anybody hates it if that's what they feel that's what the friendship is all about. I generally would think that tradesmen would be the most willing to discuss work at home--but that's because it frequently gets into comparing different options and new ideas. I picked Doctor. Not because I expect any serious doctoring, but because on an emergency basis having an EMT around is pretty handy. Generally any of the others can wait for an appointment.
I am a headhunter, and nowadays, it is kind of a drag. I don't mind giving people general advice (and it is fine as I like to help people out), but I specify in one area...and even in that one area, you need X,Y,Z skills, or frankly I can't help you. The only thing that ticks me off is when people don't seem to understand that (after telling them repeatedly) and ask me to edit their resumes, etc. As a headhunter, I could care less what your resume looks like, as long as you do X,Y,Z...so I am the worst resource to ask about that.

I went with mechanic - but could easily have gone with any of the trades. My wife's family all were tradesmen - mostly carpet or tile. You don't know the amount of money that has saved me over the years. Not only that but they know people who know other thinsg such as electric or plumbing - it is like this huge cabal. Got to love it.

After that the most utility has come from the justice of the peace we know. Unlike a general lawyer type he has distinct powers that are pretty useful.

Easily other. A friend with a PJ is the best.
Private Jet does not cost that much. Sometimes it can be cheaper than flying coach.
Come on. Almost never cheaper than flying any type of commercial. The reason people like flying private is not because it's more economical--it's because it's more convenient. It almost never makes financial sense--I've looked at the numbers for clients.

Eta: I'm not talking about flying yourself. I'd never get in a plane with a friend who thought he wanted to try being a pilot. If you want a hobby, try something other than flying.

I heard you can fly cheap if there are empty seats on private jets or if you have a small group.http://www.marketwatch.com/story/how-to-fly-on-a-private-jet-for-under-200-per-person-2014-07-01

I've often thought about taking up flying. It would be fun.As a lawyer with a SIL nurse, I'll take a good mechanic or bartender. We do enjoy her parents boat when we get the chance.

What compensation do you offer for said hook ups?

If you get a bill do you tip?

If no bill and saved you a few hundred do you give some cash, booze or return future favor?

Maybe but that's not really flying private.

I'm changing my vote to "Other" and going with billionaire who loves springing for lavish vacations and sports cars for all his buddies.

I'm a PT and have had to help a lot of friends and family with aches and pains. Saved them a lot of time and misery.

People that I depend most are my dad and cousin. They know a lot about cars and fixing things in general. I don't know what I would do without them.

With friends? If it's their business, pay. If it's not just be a friend in return. But a beer or dinner depending what the hook up is.

Lumberjack - When the zombie apocalypse goes down, I want someone on my side with some skill wielding an axe.

Best neighbor I ever had worked for Southwest Airlines. I don't recall what he did there but he regularly scored the exec's Spur' tickets. Got to watch games from a luxury suite and the sidelines. Good times, until Oliver Miller goes diving into the seats for a loose ball.
