Which NFL team has the bleakest immediate future? (1 Viewer)

Raider Nation

Devil's Advocate
Sadly, I think it's my Raiders. The coaching staff appears to be in over their head. The roster is aging. The star player is injury-prone. Our first-round picks the past several years are littered with busts. We still owe Cincinnati a high draft pick. There just isn't a quick fix here. This team needs help almost everywhere you look.

Even the Jags have some promising young talent. I can't think of a team in a worse situation than Oakland.

Why don't you go ahead and change the title to ****OAKLAND RAIDERS 2012 OFFSEASON THREAD**** ?

while you are at get it merged with the "suck for ______ thread".

thx GB

It's an amazing thing that the Bengals are unlikely to get a vote here. Not sure what they've done with Mike Brown, but someone should probably check to be sure he's not propped up behind his desk 'Weekend at Bernie's' style.

Cardinals. They are going to axe their HC, waste the prime years of one of the best WRs ever, enter the next few drafts with high picks but a void at what they actually need (QB/line), and then, of course, Fitz will be gone and I see floyd as the type of player that will waffle unless the team is competitive.

Raiders are really not nicely set at one position. They need major help EVERYWHERE.

Uh, no. They also have one of the best defenses in football as well: Calais Campbell, Darnell Dockett, Daryl Washington, Patrick Peterson. The O-line and QB positions have no doubt been a disaster. You can rebuild on one side of the ball though. This is a .500 team with a decent offense. It's rare in today's NFL that you can be outstanding on both sides of the ball. This team is built on their defense.

Imagine how much worse that 58-0 loss would have been if their defense wasn't so great. ;)

When your offense has 154 total net yards and 9 turn overs, some days it doesn't matter what defense you have. I honestly don't think Kolb is done as a NFL QB, give him a healthy line and Beanie and R.Williams healthy, with this defense this maybe a .500 team next year. Even if I'm wrong, there's way more to be optimistic about here than a team like the Raiders or the Chiefs.

3 teams without an NFL level QBArizona, KC, Jax, all worse than Oak
KC has Bowe heading into free agency though he says he'd like to stay in KC. They have J. Charles and some pieces on D. No QB unless Quinn can build on his flashes of competence this year.Jax has MJD one more year. Shorts and to a lesser extent Blackmon have shown good ability this year. Henne's a journeyman.OAK has McFadden (if he can stay healthy, a big if), Reece, and talent at WR and TE. Palmer looked good but isn't a spring chicken.Arizona has Fitz, a terrible O-line, no QB at all, no great RBs (Wells always seems dinged up and his talent is good but not great, word on Ryan Williams is still out, Powell is nothing special, Hyphen has talent but isn't the solution at RB). The D has several impressive pieces, though.I'm not too impressed with the front office or coaching of any of them.I waffled a bit between AZ and KC but I ended up ranking it this way:1. KC2. AZ3. JAX4. OAKWho would you put in at #5? Carolina? SD? Philly? Cleveland? Jets? Titans? Buffalo?

The Raiders aren't that bad with Palmer on offense, the trouble looks like their defense, WR and the o-line. A new offensive coordinator could make a big difference for instance.

The Cards were 4-0 under Kolb, there's obviously potential there. I don't think they should can Whiz, they should can the GM who keeps pulling in losers at QB.

Jax has improved just by going to Henne, again there's hope.

But: The Chiefs just seem like the bleakest. Once upon a time they were offensive and defensive innovators, but they seem to have cut all ties with what made them great in the past. Between Stram, Schotty and Vermeil it has just been so starkly bad over most of 4-5 decades now. Too bad because of what is obviously a terrific fan base too.

The only ones in serious contention for this title are KC, Jacksonville, and Oakland.

NYJ and Arizona are teetering in that direction.

But the right answer is Oakland.

KC has Charles, Hali, and Berry as decent building blocks. If they lose Branden Albert to FA this offseason, it would be a major blow.

Jacksonville has Posluszny, MJD, and....

Imagine how much worse that 58-0 loss would have been if their defense wasn't so great.Exactly. I get what Sammy is driving at but in the NFL, the top three things you must have to be great is a franchise QB, a franchise LT (RT if left handed), and a DE that can generate sacks. The Cards have NONE of that and, quite honestly, they don't play well in the secondary as a collective group. So, the Cards basically need every possible thing that all competitive teams need. In today's NFL, you must be able to score points. At least the raiders can do that, at times. The cards can't . The Cards are dead last in the league in total offense, 31st in rushing offense, almost rock bottom in sacks by linemen, bttom third in penalties, and bottom five in generating turnovers. This team can not win and shows no signs of being able to any time soon. ;)

Interesting debate. Time for a field test and I can't think of a better venue than this weekends game of KC 2-11 at OAK 3-10. Winner is the biggest loser...erp....I mean loser is the biggest winner.

Oakland has a good kicker and solid RB's...their best RB can't stay healthy, but the backups run the ball very well considering the circumstances. WR's are ok too.

Yeah, Zona is without a doubt the worst team around. They have two quality players on their entire roster that are rendered completely useless by the absolute crap surrounding them. They have:No QB and not even a game-manager type prospect on their roster. Hoyer is already the best QB they haveNo oline which renders even a competent QB like Kolb battered and uselessNo pass rushNo run stopping playmakers at LBOne incredibly good corner who is useless to them because there is literally no one else that opposing offenses even worry about on their entire defense. No running game and no promise of having a decent one even if they could fix their offensive line, which they can'tOne pro-bowl caliber receiver who is rendered useless by the lack of QB or olineSo what do they do? Go o-line first and think that will help? They are at least three great picks/acquisitions away from having an average oline.Try and nab a franchise QB? No real standouts this year and their oline would ruin him anyway.Go for a premier DE like Clowney or a LB like Jarvis Jones? That would give them exactly two playmakers on one of the worst defenses in the league and no offense.IMO they are at least one more season from being able to field a competitive team. I think they have to go ahead and consider 2013 a lost season and stack up on as many good OL and DL prospects as they can. Then think skill players in the 2014 draft.

Not much of an analysis I admit. Their offense is so bad it would make any D look terrible. Still can't think of a single player on the defense other than Peterson that I would worry about as an OC. Admittedly, I have seen little of the travesty they call Cardinals football this year.

They're not awash in talent by any stretch but Campbell and Washington are both really good players.

I'd have to go with Oakland, mostly because they have a lot less ammunition for which to rebuild, and holes everywhere, even where their positions are strong on paper (RB b/c of injuries). You should be thankful that they hired a GB-class GM, though. That's exactly what the Raiders need; someone who will take the long-term, smart approaches and stop sacrificing the current for the future. If that organization sticks with the 5-year outlook instead of a "next game" outlook there is a bright future down the road. Likely won't be for years, though. They lost a bunch of picks so the benefit won't be seen for years after they actually start making the high picks. I would be shocked if they seriously competed for the division in the next 5 years.

KC is the best of the worst, with few outstanding play-makers for which to build around.

I don't consider KC as bad as their record indicates they are.

That team has talent on both sides of the ball, what they are missing is a QB and some sort of inspired leadership/coaching.

Oakland needs an entire defense. As in every piece of that defense is bad. It's not even like they have talent on that side of the ball that's not performing(not counting Old man Seymour).. they are all just bad players.

Same thoughts here. I thought Haley had a decent 1st year and they looked like one of the top up and coming teams. Then they got hit as hard as any team has by injuries prior to last season. Then they hired Crennel...

Dockett is gone next year, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Fitz traded for 2 first rounders and let the rebuild start with that. A new coach is gonna be great for this team.

:goodposting: And of course, there are no franchise QBs available this year when we'll have a Top-3 pick. :kicksrock:
Didn't you guys trade for one? Sorry, that was too easy. Hey, it could be worse. I mean, you could root for a team with 0 super bowls and is in implosion mode. Looks like we need to add the Birds to this list.

What do you think the answer to this question would have been 3 years ago?

That year the teams with 4 or fewer wins were KC, Washington, Tampa, Detroit, and St. Louis. 4 of those 5 then used 1st round picks on QBs that (for the most part) worked out well.

Things can change quickly in the NFL, just look at Miami and Cleveland. Heck, look at the Colts!

Looked at the numbers and you guys are right, they rank well in every major defensive category and are top 5 against the pass. I still think they are in the worst shape of all the teams though.

Read somewhere they actually hired some scouts a couple of years ago. It shows.

To answer the OP - it's Oakland. Without a 2nd round pick, no long term answer at QB, more questions than answers at skill positions, and most importantly absolutely zero identity on defense whatsoever.

KC drafts Geno and a WR and pair them with an improvement up top and they're competing instantly. I actually think they're in a similar boat as Buffalo except unfortunately for Bills fans they weren't bad enough this year to get Geno.

Arizona plucks up one of the backups in their division, pairs them with a couple of OL pieces, and an offensive scheme that matches their talent and they're at least average, maybe better.

Jax is probably the closest to Oakland because, like the Raiders, they have zero identity on defense. They do have some younger talent though, unlike Oakland. Also unlike Oakland, they have some skill position talent to build around, more questions than answers but more upside for sure. Like KC they need Geno and better management. Unfortunately it looks like they will be drafting 2nd, so the free agent route may be the choice.

If the Jets retain their current guys I think they will be the leader in the clubhouse come 2014.

Buffalo is NEVER bad enough to land a top QB prospect in the draft. They'll do what they always do and trade for some QB cast-off from another team.Just like Fitz and Vince Young. This time around they may go after Vick or Kolb or Flynn or Tebow or who the hell knows? The Bills are a complete scam of a franchise set out to screw over their fans under the false pretense of being competitive when they'll inevitably keep their current "longest absence from the playoffs" streak alive and well year after year until Ralph Wilson dies (or becomes a zombie like Al Davis and lives another 20 years).

The Redskins.

They invested EVERYTHING into a running QB who has already had 1 ACL tear, now a partial tear.

He's been phenomenal on every other level other then he simply wont learn not to take a hit. 100 years of football suggests he wont last if he continues.

The Redskins.
ool
Can't wait for him to bust. Hes a 1 year wonder who playef in the big 12. Vince Young is the Big 12s ALL-TIME leading passer in the NFL. 14 rushes per game. He is slightly bigger than Vick, but hell never survive a playoff run and I have my doubts he can even survive a season in the NFC. I foresee yet another 5-10 season of ineptitude, Shanny gets canned and the next coach changes everything yet again, then the next coaching regime trades him away because he wasnt their guy.

It's the Redskins, they missmanage everything.

Arizona is incredibly close to being at least .500, if not better. I would look at picking up either Matt Flynn or Alex Smith this off-season. I dont think either of them are franchise QB's but they are both something solid. The defense is solid in Arizona. You can address the O-line and RB in the draft. Just that makes them better than at least 10 other teams in the NFL.

:goodposting: Alex Smith plus a couple of new bodies on the o line and they are right in the mix in that division.

I think Tennessee belongs in the conversation. Their defense is bottom 8 in pass and rush defense and are 2nd last in the league in points allowed per game, also their franchise QB Jake Locker but due to his injuries that's not overtly obvious yet, meaning he'll get more undeserved chances for sucking in the near future; that's a very good combination for upcoming failure. It doesn't help either that their top WR Kenny Britt's main priorities are avoiding jail time and healing injuries and that their best offensive player Chris Johnson is Jekyll & Hyde personified.
