 49ers | Team will switch to a 3-4 scheme

Dennis Georgatos, of the San Jose Mercury News, reporting for the Sporting News, reports the San Francisco 49ers plan to use a 3-4 scheme in 2007, which is favored by head coach Mike Nolan. In the past two years, the team played mostly 4-3 because it kept getting set back by injuries, depth issues, and the lack of a wide-bodied nose tackle.

The new defensive coordinator, Greg Manusky, has coached a 3-4 scheme under Wade Phillips for the past few years.

:) There are a few different versions of 3-4 fronts around the league currently, all of which are a little different than the three man fronts of 20-30 years ago. In total, eight teams will line up in a three man front a significant percentage of the time in 2007.

New England, Cleveland, and the New York Jets all run some version of Bill Belichick's hybrid front defense. All three teams use a three man front most often, but will line up in a 4-3 at times or, rarely, a five man front.

San Diego and now Dallas run an attacking version of the 3-4 developed by Wade Phillips with linemen who penetrate much more than traditional three man fronts. San Francisco will try to get back into a similar scheme this season; Mike Nolan picked up his 3-4 philosophy from Phillips while the two were in Denver.

Pittsburgh and Miami are teams in transition, but **** Lebeau and Dom Capers will use more zone blitz calls than the rest of the 3-4 teams. It's not yet clear how quickly the Steelers might transition to the 4-3/Tampa-2 new HC Mike Tomlin favors. For now, it appears that the 2007 scheme will be mostly 3-4. Miami looks to be transitioning to the more traditional 3-4 of Capers than the hybrid version Nick Saban installed a couple years ago.

Baltimore runs a hybrid front as well but uses a three man front rarely, if at all. Rex Ryan's scheme is a mish-mash of four man fronts (4-3, 4-4-3, and 46) with all kinds of coverages and blitzes.

Don't forget the occasional 2-man fronts! :ptts:
