Which "What If" supplies you keep in your Trunk/Vehicle? (1 Viewer)

[icon]

Insoxicated
Most folks keep a first aid kit... some jumper cables in their trunk/vehicle.  What do you keep back there?

In my trunk:

  • Jumper Cables - Duh
  • First Aid Kit -  Solid one came with car - added a bit to it.
  • 100pc Mechanics Tool Kit - Has come in handy more than a few times either on the road or while somewhere.
  • Koozies / Cups - You'd be surprised
  • Bottle of Bourbon - Came in handy at a terrible weeding last weekend.
  • Stribog 9mm Carbine + 2 extra 30rd magazines - In case the carry pistol isn't enough
  • Emergency Food - Usually about 2000 calories of meal bars*
  • Heat Blanket
  • Gallon of water in stainless RTIC jug*
  • 20,000mah Battery pack + Jumper Pack*
  •  4 Quality Glow Sticks
  • Small Fire Extinguisher
  • 1000 lumen flashlight*
  • Rolls of Duct and electrical Tape
* Require periodic recharge/refill/maintenance

Takes up a surprisingly small amount of space, though it helps that the LS460 trunk is cavernous. Most items have come in handy at least once or twice over the years.

Good points.

Used to keep tire inflator / plug kit / slime in my jeep (largely for off road use) but in the car, on road, with a full size spare I stopped.

Thankfully the OEM jack for my car is solid... some are straight trash and should definitely be upgraded.

In my trunk:
Yep.

Kicked myself yesterday for not having jumper cables though.

I usually will have a pair of golf shoes and some golf balls in my trunk. At times my softball bag. But that's about it.

Spare, jack, etc

Jumper cables

Washer fluid

Portable water dish for the dog

Shovel, ice scraper, and snow brush for about half the year.

I know Mr R has stuff in there.  I know we have a flashlight, a folding knife, and towels.  Also a book to read just in case.

I will preface this with my car is my office. I have most of this stuff in a cardboard box that I move between vehicles if I'm not in my regular car. My wife half jokes and asks if I keep tampons in it. I love that woman. I probably should lol. Pads and tampons can be used in a pinch to help control other types of bleeding.

Cables

Fixaflat, plug kit, compressor that plugs into the car.

Tool kit

A case of water that gets replenished frequently. I spent $2 one time at a gas station for water and have kept a case in the car since. I use them to refill my yeti full of ice.

Granola bars and pecans. Pecan trees are plentiful around here, I get them for free and I will snack on them sometimes. I actually just threw my car pecans away on Sunday they weren't fresh anymore.

First aid kit, all kinds of OTCs

Trash bags, zip locks and shopping bags.

Shovel, loppers, and work gloves.

Flaslights and spare batteries.

Since the pandemic extra masks, gloves hand sanitizer (both gel and distillery liquid). I actually already had two surgical masks and hand sanitizer in my box when the pandemic hit.

A couple solo cups, napkins, plastic ware.

Small amount of emergency cash.

Sunscreen, bugspray, spare cheap sunglasses.

Disposable razors, for when I realize halfway through the day I missed a spot.

I won't get into personal protection, but it is sufficient and something is handy in all parts of the car. There are unsolved murders in my area and there are a few places where I walk over the very spot where bodies have lain. One place is a block and a half away from a police station, and a few feet away from where a competitor was robbed at gunpoint. Eyes and ears are always open. I have rendered first aid, called the ambulance for people and separately discovered two deceased people.

I'm sure there's a few things I'm leaving out.

Edit- Mrs R's post reminded me towels, windbreaker, hoodie, raincoat and extra socks.

Even pre cell phones, I've never had any event that left me stranded.

Nowadays, with cell phones and where I drive 99% of the time, I'm fine with nothing and will roll the dice that I may need a tow every 10 years.
If I'm traveling to somewhere remote, I'd throw the emergency pack in the back.  maybe.

My list:

  • Jumper cables
  • Stuff to change tires
  • Ice scraper for windshield

Does nothing or adds a little bit of character. I wouldn't worry about the flavor being negatively impacted unless it has a cheap plastic lid. Surely he's not drinking anything that comes in a plastic bottle.

What do you tow your trunk with?

@[icon] you had me at bourbon.

Does nothing or adds a little bit of character. I wouldn't worry about the flavor being negatively impacted unless it has a cheap plastic lid. Surely he's not drinking anything that comes in a plastic bottle.

I mean, it's emergency whiskey so I'm assuming he's not keeping BTAC or anything in there but still, I've always heard heat can impact it great, especially at those temps and definitely if open.  Although - maybe our hero only keeps sealed bottles in there and then swap it out if he ever has to break glass in case of emergency.  Probably that as there may also be some TN open container laws he'd rather totally avoid.

My list:

  • Jumper cables
  • Stuff to change tires
  • Ice scraper for windshield
@[icon]- does the heat not screw with the bourbon?  Memphis in the summer your trunk has to hit 100-120 right?
Yes it gets hot. No it doesn't really make a big difference, though I usually just keep a bottle of regular stuff back there (currently Woodford double Oaked).

Open container Laws don't apply to a locked trunk in TN 👍🏼

First aid kit (kids) and a folding camping chair (to sit in when I pick up the kids at school or go their sports practices).

Keeping golf clubs in your trunk is a bad idea in warm months.   It can get really hot in there and it can degrade the epoxy.
Yep. Also, I've been told by my fitter that the constant jiggling/vibrating messes with the calibration of the irons.

Man got a gotdamn portable city in there.

TBF I have not owned a car since 2001. Once in awhile we rent an escape pod for a weekend. Otherwise there is simply no need for a vehicle in our lifestyle.

If we did ever become car people again, it would an EV. I was with friend who drives a Model X tonight and besides his UMC charging cable and a few adapters, he keeps exactly one thing in his lift back - an e-scooter. That way if he has to park 1/4 or 1/2 from his destination, he just zips over instead of wasting time looking for a spot near where he’s going,

2010 Focus - golf clubs, jumper cables, I think one of those emergency kits that has flares and stuff.  Might be some random fly fishing lures.  Some other random stuff I could MacGyver if I needed to

i pretty much only drive this to and from work a few days a week

2021 Pacifica Hybrid -

not much

the wifes car, plus our family vehicle.  Primarily city driving, take it on vacation

I will add Faraday Cage. Good idea.

Collapsible fishing poles and tackle. And all the other stuff already mentioned. Except the Faraday cage. I built one of those around the whole trunk like an exoskeleton.

Uhhhhhh I have some baby wipes in case I have lunch in my car. Can’t stand dirty hands. Otherwise I live in an area of 3 million people, I’ll just call somebody if I’m stranded. I’m far too lazy to change a flat on the side of the road, that would simply never happen.

Jumper cables

Spotlight I built when I was like 12 - probably doesn’t work anymore

Extra brake and washer fluid

Towel

Sunscreen

Rock climbing gear

Jumper cables is about it. And maybe some random tools that I forgot to take out.

Not much because I don't like locking my vehicles.

My newest car is 19 years old, and I've only recently had a vehicle with automatic locks. I can't stand those things. And of course unlocking with a key is also irritating.

I need my beaters to last another 40 years because if automatic door locks baffle me, I can't imagine ever getting used to those key fob things everybody has now.
