Who do you think wins (1 Viewer)

Coughlin

Giants will show they have the most complete team in the NFL.

This is a great topic. For reference:

2011 Jim Harbaugh San Francisco 49ers

2010 Bill Belichick (3) New England Patriots

2009 Marvin Lewis Cincinnati Bengals

2008 Mike Smith Atlanta Falcons

2007 Bill Belichick(2) New England Patriots

2006 Sean Payton New Orleans Saints

2005 Lovie Smith Chicago Bears

2004 Marty Schottenheimer San Diego Chargers

2003 Bill Belichick New England Patriots

2002 Andy Reid Philadelphia Eagles

2001 **** Jauron Chicago Bears

2000 Jim Haslett New Orleans Saints

In looking back, it's typically someone who had a team that pretty much sucked the year before. So in order to predict I'm only going to target non playoff teams. My thoughts:

1. Chan Gailey - Buffalo

2. Mike Shanahan - Washington

3. Greg Schiano - Tampa Bay

I agree that it is most likely going to come from a non-playoff team in 2011, but think it also has to be a team that makes or nearly makes the playoffs in 2012. In that case, I can't really back CLE or TB or WAS, who look like the clear 4th teams in their divisions. Of course, that's part of the reason predicting COTY is so hard, because one of those three teams probably does make a playoff run.

That said, I like Jacksonville. Good defense, good running game, now they have good receivers. Presumably Mularkey learned a bit from his time in BUF and will be a better HC the second time around. The QB is the glaring weakness, but Gabbert has to play better this year. If he still isn't good enough, Henne could do a solid enough job. It would take some luck, but the Jags could challenge for a wildcard berth. If they made the playoffs, Mularkey would have a pretty strong COTY case.

Jeff Fisher is a good candidate. The Rams, 2-14 last year, have nowhere to go but up, and if they jump to 2nd in their division and somehow get to 8-8 or 9-7, Fisher could get some support.

If you had to guess right now, whom would be your choice?
Pete Carroll
I like Carroll, too, but with a 7-9 record last year, there's not a ton of room to go up. He'll probably need to get to 11 or 12 wins. Going from 7-9 to 10-6 is nothing special (not saying this is right, just looking at the history of the award). In the last 30 years, only Ray Rhodes has made such a small improvement and had such a non-elite record to win the award, and he was in his first season with the Eagles. Getting Seattle to 11 wins would be impressive, but I don't see it against that schedule. I think they're a gritty 9-7 team.

I'll pick one AFC and one NFC coach as my favorites.

AFC, Romeo Crennel- KC Chiefs

NFC,Greg Schiano - TB Buccaneers

I'll throw Mike Munchak out there. Titans have Indy and Jax in their division (Jax won't be a pushover) and while they do have the NFC North this year and the Saints, they were 9-7 last year, have two capable QBs, possibly Britt coming back OK (plus other good receiving weapons) and I think most of us are banking on Chris Johnson playing better in 2012. They can win 11 games and that might catapult the first year HC if other, better teams are the usual suspects and they don't want to give the award to Bellicheck again.

Its a gut feeling, but I think the Eagles have the monster season they were hyped for last year. Therefore, Andy Reid is COTY.

I'm going to say Gary Kubiak. No the Texans didn't suck at all last year, but I don't think anyone saw them coming to the degree that they did (along with no one knowing what would eventually happen with Peyton Manning). That said, if they come out this year and blow the doors off of their division, it'll be hard to ignore the job he's done over the past two seasons.

I think Andy Reid of Jim Harbaugh are the most likely. Reid's team could go from no playoffs to the #1 seed. Harbaugh's team is still being underrated and most will be surprised when they pick right up where they left off last year.

Its probably gonna be Andy Reid. I think Mike McCarthy has a shot as well. McCarthy doesn't fit the mold of a rebound season, going 15-1 a year ago. But here are the facts:

1. Won a super bowl two years ago.

2. Went 15-1 last year.

3. Has yet to get his due by winning the award.

4. Have a soft schedule this year. Outside of a november game at the Giants, and opening the season at home vs the 49ers, the schedule looks nice. This should be a 14-2 season for the Pack.

No mention of him yet, but I think Ron Rivera will be in the running.

I think the Panthers will be a playoff team this season, and it would be a two year turnaround from the #1 pick to the playoffs...so he would be a good choice.

I'm not as high on the Panthers as you are, but if you're right and Carolina makes the playoffs, Rivera will be on the short list.

Has there ever been a less successful prediction thread in Shark Pool history? I was captain of this Titanic, with the Mularkey prediction.

[Note: The original thread had the subheading "Coach of the Year."]

Well, I don't know, it wasn't that bad. No one could have forseen Arians winning it when he wasn't even a head coach at the beginning of the year. Pagano was second.

But even if the team unexpectedly wins 8 games, much of the credit will likely go to Andrew Luck, not Chuck Pagano.
Again no one could have forseen Pagano getting sick. It's a bit of a pass this past year. Personally I think you were right on about the Colts. They were a quality team which took a dive for year (not supposed to happen in the NFL) so they could get Luck; getting Luck they were (surprise) a winning team again.

Frankly I think Joe Vitt going 4-5 with the Saints and all they had to contend with was more impressive than Pagano with what had been just a year removed from having been a perennial playoff team.

Third place was Carroll and under ordinary circumstances he might have been the winner. There were a couple votes for him and you mentioned him in your article.

Yeah, but no one even mentioned Pagano in this thread. And there were a lot of Reid nominations, too. I don't think there's a tougher award to pick.

This thread only further illustrates how disastrous the loss of subtitles is for the forum, the message board, the community and the world at large.
