Who had the best secondary ever? (1 Viewer)

First a history discussion-- What NFL team had the best secondary ever? I can think of a number of good CB pairs or a great CB/FS combo, but am wondering if anyone can come up with a team that had 2 amazing cornerbacks, and 2 amazing safeties. Anyone?

Already Green Bay's secondary is stellar, with pro-bowlers Tramon Williams, Nick Collins and last year's DPY Charles Woodson. But I read this today on Rotoworld:

"Nnamdi Asomugha - DB - Raiders

NFL.com's Michael Lombardi lists the Dolphins, Patriots and Packers as potential destinations for free agent CB Nnamdi Asomugha this offseason.

Lombardi believes Asomugha "must go to a team that plays press-man-to-man coverage, which highlights his skill set." That would make the Jets a possibility, but with so many free agents of their own to take care of, they are unlikely to be in the market for one of the game's top overall players."

There are rumors that Green Bay may move Woodson to safety, a position he played sporadically last season due to injuries and his waning speed. That opens the door for Asomugha as CB2 with Shields (starting caliber already) as CB3.

It's a long shot that this will happen, admittedly, but if it did happen, where would Green Bay's secondary rank on the all-time stud list?

The 2006 Ravens secondary was awfully good with Ed Reed, Samari Rolle, and Chris McCallister all in their prime. Dawan Landry wasn't half bad either. Those 4 players combined for 19 interceptions.

I doubt they move Woodson to safety just yet. They have Collins there and just drafted Burnett this last year.

Woodson does well playing right where he is.

Also, not sure Ted is going to tie up that much $$$ in the secondary. Woodson, Williams, and Collins are all paid pretty well.

Craig Newsome, Leroy Butler, Eugene Robinson, and Doug Evans was a fantastic secondary during the Super Bowl XXXI run.

It will never happen. Why? Follow the money. Packers have tons of it tied up in their secondary already.

Tramon Williams: 5 years 38 million

Charles Woodson: 5 years 55 million

Nick Collins: 4 years 27 million

All those contracts were signed in 2010.

The Packers will need all the money they have to sign their own upcoming FAs. Finley, Sitton, Wells and Jordy Nelson will all be Free Agents after the 2011 season. Finley and Sitton could command top dollar.

True, however, how long do you think Woodson's gonna play? I think 2011 is his last year, letting a huge wad of cash open up in 2012. So I really don't think money/cap room is an issue even though things will be tight for a year.

Agreed... Beside, Ted Thompson is known to cultivate talents from his draft picks (i.e. Jermichael Finley and Nick Collins) and FA picks up (i.e Sam Shields and Tramon Williams). It is foregone conclusion that he would follow a same method in preparation for the upcoming season (if there is one). I dont think Packers' secondary has not reach its full peak yet (Charles Woodson, Tramon Williams, Sam Shields, Nick Collins, and Morgan Burnett) hasn't play on a same field for a full season yet. A scary thought, though...

The over 40 set will probably remember seeing these guys play. Player-for-player, as terrific an aggregate secondary as they come.

Kansas City Chiefs, mid 80's:

SS Lloyd Burruss and FS Deron Cherry both arrived in 1981 and patrolled the secondary together until both called it quits in 1991. CB Albert Lewis arrived in 1983 playing in KC through 1993 before logging another 5 years with the Raiders, compiling one of the best careers of an NFL DB ever. CB Kevin Ross rounded out the foursome in 1984, playing 9 years with the Chiefs through 1993...Lewis was the all-star, Cherry and Ross were standout pros, and when Burress was healthy, he could hit and tackle with the best SS's in the game...

When these 4 were on the field together, (limited in opportunity somewhat due to Burress being injury-prone), they did an admirable job both with solid coverage, and hard hitting. In terms of 4 guys working together and the whole being greater than the sum of it's parts, they were a group that deserves mentioning in any discussion of this sort.

I'm pretty sure the Raiders DBs from the late 70s early 80s rank up there. Also, Mel Blount asside, the Steelers secondary from the 70s are underrated because of their DL. IMO the 78 Steelers have the best defense in the history of the game, and that includes the 85 Bears and 2000(?) Ravens
