Who has been to the FL Keys? (1 Viewer)

If you are going in March stay away from Key West. Spring Break will be going on you would be better off staying on another key. Marathon would be the best location wise.  You could hit both lower and upper keys from there.

The lady and I are going to be down there next month, Friday the 4th- Monday the 7th, flying in via FLL and then renting a car and driving back to South Beach for a work award trip the 7th-10th.  Never been to either place, and just added on Key West as if I'm going to fly all the way across the country I'd rather stay for more than three nights so I extended the trip on the front end.

I was planning on picking up the car on Sunday morning so we'd have one day to drive around, figured after a full day of travel on Friday we'll just stay local on Saturday, and we can explore the Keys more on Sunday if we want.

Used HH points to book the Waldorf Casa Marina.  I didn't even think about Spring Break, guess that explains why everything seemed so expensive.  Website says it has a private beach, but up thread here people are saying the area isn't much for beaches?

Appreciate the suggestions here, didn't notice this thread earlier as the trip wasn't even on my radar yet.

No beaches in conventional sense. Some of the hotels have private beaches.  Plenty to do though really don't need the beach or the sand. Plenty of opportunities to see the ocean and get Plenty of sun. Be sure to see the dry tortougas you don't want to miss that.

If your driving down from Ft Lauderdale be sure to give yourself plenty of time. Traffic will be horrendous because of spring break. If I remember correctly it took us almost 4 hrs to get from Homestead to Key West when we went two years ago during spring break. Also I would invest in some good sun glasses so your wife/girl friend can't see where your looking. There will be more female ### cheeks than you can shake a stick at. Man these bathing suits the girls wear now are something else.

Thanks.  We're actually flying from FLL to Key West then driving back on Monday morning, so hopefully won't be too bad.

Since Spring Break will be getting started, what should I book ahead of time that's must see?

Good call on the mirrored sunglasses......

I really don't think you need to book ahead on anything other than the Dry Tortougas trip. I like the boat trip because of the bar,but I'm sure the flight is fun too. To be honest I don't do  lot of the touristy stuff. I go down to do nothing or something just depends on how I'm feeling. That's the thing about the Keys and most of the barrier Islands anywhere in Florida the atmosphere is laid back and everyone lives on island time.

I spend most of my time on Duval st getting my buzz on. 1st few hours I usually do pretty well but the later it gets the more buildings I usually have to help hold up by leaning on them.

Here is a YouTube video on stuff to do.       https://youtu.be/V1ND7K6vQEM

Take a fishing charter out of Marathon or Islamorada.  Grab the back left or back right spot on the boat.  They'll clean and filet your catch at the dock and recommend a local bar/restaurant you can sit at the bar, throw back a few cold ones staring out at the blue water and eating your fried catch.  That fish was in his living room an hour ago.  Doesn't get fresher.

Also check out Keys Fisheries if you want great fresh seafood and a view.  https://www.facebook.com/KeyFisheries/

And finally No Name Pub in Big Pine Key.  Great little dive.  https://www.floridarambler.com/historic-florida-getaways/florida-keys-no-name-pub/
