SF biggest problem will be can their passing game make a play in the playoffs when they need too? If they play a really good D like chicago or if NYG gets there D rolling Im not sure Alex Smith can get it done.

houston is the most complete team.

A. Smith got it done last year in the playoffs w/o the weapons he has now.

no he didnt, vs NYG he couldnt complete a pass after the 3rd quarter. He made alot of plays vs NO, but I would call that D anywhere near "good" he basically has the same weapons though, Mario Manningham is his only upgrade, I dont see Moss doing much so far, maybe they are saving him, but Crabtree, VDavis, Gore were all there last year

Crabtree looks like a new player this year. I credit that to Moss in a lot of ways. It's been stated numerous times that he has taken Crabtree under his wing and greatly helped him to develop as a pro. I think Moss' leadership and wisdom are being overlooked. Manningham can take the top off a D which has greatly helped as well. Maybe Moss will be used more as the year goes on but I'm not counting on that.

I used to think it was Houston because of their passing game, but at this point, I'm not sure their passing game is any better than San Francisco's. Statistically, it's a dead heat or in SF's favor.

I think SF's D is better and their special teams are definitely better. Their coaching is a zillion times better, so I'll go SF as long as Smith continues to be very good.

Apparently you missed Kyle Williams two punt returns (or lack thereof) that cost SF the game.

NE - Although their record does not reflect my opinion, they now have a solid running game and an improved defense and the best player in the NFL. Hard to count them out.

I'm surprised the Texans are getting so many votes. They certainly look the part, but playing 4 of your 5 games against Miami, Jacksonville, Tennessee, and the Jets can make you look pretty good.

They've yet to play a team with a winning record and the one decent team they've played (Denver) they performed about the same as Atlanta and New England.

Falcon fan here. On a neutral field I think Houston could beat everyone in the NFL. my vote is for them.
It sounds like Brian Cushing is done for the year. I would give them just a slight downgrade.
I thought they were the best - losing Cushing is a monstrous loss. No depth at LB at all and Watt is is only one man (albeit a superman). The Cushing loss moves Falcons to the top of the heap IMHO.

Although they didn't look premiere last night against the Jets, I have to say Houston. That defense is lights-out and the balance on offense keeps a defense guessing. They're going deep this year...

Not looking forward to the Pack visiting HOU next week =(

They're just warming up. Talent-wise the Texans passing game should be one of the best in the league. They're bottom 10 in attempts, but top 2 in NY/A. They're relying on their run game and defense, but they haven't really needed to throw much yet.

The next two weeks against the Packers and Ravens will tell us a lot.

You could say the same about SF's schedule. They have played one winning team and they lost to them.

I still like SF even though they have 1 loss and Atl and Hou do not.
First let me say that it is a small sample size all the way around ...Houston and Atlanta have won every game regardless of who they played.I choose Houston at this point over Atlanta.I don't know how you can pick SF here ... They have a loss in a game which they played poorly in ... in all phases and they deserved to lose. They made Christian Ponder look like a HoFer ...The Giants do not deserve any consideration here. They have looked horrible in what should have been two easy wins against "bad" competition; they could easily be 1-4 ...The Ravens should have 3 losses. The replacement refs literally gave them the game against New England. Against KC they were extremely fortunate on several different plays ... the botched snap to Cassel, the blow to Cassel [no unsportsmanlike? if that had been manning or brady ...], the McCluster OPI was not OPI at all as the ball had not been thrown and the Raven defender initiated contact with extended arms ... and finally the ball placement for Rice's 1st down was questionable ... or else KC wins!

Funny, nobody ever said that about the Patriots all those years they were beating up on crappy opponents. The default position was "They're the Patriots, they can beat anyone."The Texans are the best team right now, but the loss of Cushing is a huge blow.

I don't know why Chicago and Minn are on here? I get their records are good and I'm a Vikes fan living in bear country but they both have sig question marks.

I think NYG vs either of them on neutral field I'd pick NYG.

I think that San Fran will be hard to beat, you can lay that game on Alex but there was 2 botched punts, and the so called non fumble bt Bradshaw that won that game. San Francisco gave that game to giants just like Baltimore gave the game to the patriots, I am predicting ravens 49ers superbowl.

Thanks for not skimping on the size of your avatar. A lot of people could learn from you.

But if they had lost to the Jets and Broncos, those teams would be over .500, and then people would say, "They can't beat winning teams."

Below are my power rankings, which should end this debate.

If we're picking who deserves the title of "best team right now" based on the 5 games played, I think you have to go with Houston. (I voted this)

If we're guessing the SB winner, I would shade toward SF.

I voted for San Francisco. Would have even without the Cushing injury, though that would ice it for me.

I would take Baltimore just slightly over Atlanta, as well, think their defense is a small notch above Atlanta's. And that lead would be magnified if Suggs can make it back this year and be effective. Which admittedly is iffy.

I think it's pretty crowded at the top though, could argue many teams.

Thing is if the 49ers passing game had done ANYTHING from the 2nd half of that game on they wouldn't have been in a position for Kyle Williams to cough up the game. In that sense you could argue that the Niners' passing ineptitude in that game was one of the biggest reasons why they lost (Niners fan/Smith fan talking here)As for this poll I'd say it's a dead heat between Houston and San Francisco, with Atlanta a little behind. Voted for SF because I'm a shameful homer, but it could go either way.

I think we should have learned by now that being the best team in October doesn't get you much, it's the best teams at the end of the year and in the playoffs that matter.

Right, but the "losing teams" SF have beaten include Detroit and Green Bay, and it seems most people don't think they're as bad as their record would indicate. As someone pointed out up above, this is a dumb criticism this early in the year anyway, because if Buffalo, NYJ or GB had beaten the 49ers, they'd have a winning record right now. So it's a lose-lose argument for the 49ers. The fact is that those teams have a losing record (partly) because the 49ers beat them. Houston barely beat the Jets last night. San Francisco destroyed the Jets last week, and then destroyed the Bills this week. They're putting up video game scores right now - yes, the Jets and Bills are bad, but that's what "the best team in the NFL" is supposed to do to bad teams, not escape with a 6 point win.I think SF is the best team right now, despite the one loss. They're just clicking on all cylinders, and will face a nice test this week against the Giants.

Question about the Falcons. I have Julio, but I don't really watch them all that closely every week.

They looked pretty damn good last year also. Then they got to the Meadowlands in the playoffs, and the Giants defensive line absolutely abused Atlanta's O-line on their way to a laughable 24-2 beating.

My question is, what has changed for Atlanta? If they meet the Giants (or another physical team like the Giants) in the playoffs, do we have reason to suspect anything will be different? Is Ryan getting the ball out quicker under Dirk Koetter than he did under Mike Mularkey? Has their offensive line improved at all? To me, their best chance, obviously, is to keep plugging along to make sure every playoff game is in the Georgia Dome.

If the playoffs started next week I think we'd be looking at a Harbaugh bowl. But you're right that if the question is best team through 5 weeks, it's Houston.

1st half: 2/7, 79 yards, 1 TD2nd half/OT: 10/19, 117 yards, 1 TD:shrug:ETA: Just realized you said after the 3rd quarter. I think it was a different poster who said they didn't do anything in the 2nd half. Splits definitely look worse if you cut them in between the 3rd and 4th quarter.

Somehow NYG recovered 4 of 5 fumbles in that game. Eli also threw a pass so bad, two 49ers collided and didn't intercept the pass.

Okay, I know Arizona looked like hell of offense this past week, but they are still 4-1, so how are they not in this poll? And a team they beat on the road, New England, is! Basically, NE and Arizona, taking that game away, are both 3-1, and then Arizona won at NE. Seems simple to me.

And I say that figuring that the Patriots will be better over the course of the season, but if the question is who is the best team right now or has been so far, including NE and not Arizona doesn't make any sense.
