Who is Troy Smith? (1 Viewer)

Just noticed he was released by the Ravens. Now this is not normally a good turn in one's NFL career, but consider...

He won the Heisman in 2006 with a record 86% of the first place votes.

He fell to the fifth round of the draft because he's, well, as tall as Drew Brees. No other knocks I could find.

He was slated to start for the Ravens til he fell ill in TC in '09 and Flacco seized the reins, over some grumbling from the vets.

He's looked competent in limited opportunities, and appears to have his head on straight.

The Ravens brought in Bulger to hold the clipboard, and did Troy a favor be freeing him.

I wonder if he might like the climate in Arizona?

Why not? Lots of people retire in Arizona. Now, if you're talking about the team, I can tell you Whisenhunt is sticking with the 3 he has.Lots of guys won the Heisman who never did anything in the NFL. It's actually a joke award IMO, a BCS school popularity contest where schools spend lots of money sending out their propaganda to voters all season long to get their guy votes, because if a school's guy wins it means better recruits later on. It's almost always won by a QB these days (8 of the last 10), or once in awhile a RB, and defensive players are rare. In fact, there's been just one non-QB/RB since 1991 (Charles Woodson). The best college player seldom wins. For future NFL value it can be ignored. Just look at guys like Chris Weinke, Eric Crouch, Matt Leinart, Jason White, Gino Torretta, Danny Wuerffel, and I promise you -- Tim Tebow will be another on the scrap heap. It's only because McDaniels and Xanders are morons that Tebow is even getting a legit shot.Smith begged to be traded all offseason. When BAL tried there were no takers. With Bulger on board he was expendable and was released. Not a word about interest by other teams yet. If/when he lands a job it'll be as a backup. Because that's what he is.

As I understand it, the Heisman is not given to the college player who will absolutely, positively, have no doubt about it, be the best NFL player in the FUTURE.

It is given to the one who, in the opinion of the judges, was the best player that PAST year in college. Disagree with them if you wish, but don't make it a referendum on the first statement.

I'll stand by what I said. It's a joke award, a QB/RB big name-and-money school award where everyone else is ignored.

troy was a very good qb but its likely he has regressed and its likely he was never given a shot due to his height. so it goes. as usual, ppl otb feel that everyone deserves what they ahve or have not achieved. its good thing sean payton took a chance on drew brees.

I think he can tag along somewhere in the NFL as a backup. I'm thinking Colts - even though he doesn't really fit what they do, Curtis Painter's been terrible thus far. Surprised he made the roster.

Or, in this case, it was given to a guy that beat up on weak competition before the voters got to see him get embarrassed against a real defense in the NC game.

I don't know if he's any good or not, but I wouldn't mind seeing Pittsburgh bring him in for a look. Can't say I'm wild about any of our current stable of backups.

Buffalo makes a lot of sense; of course Buffalo always makes a lot of sense.
I was wondering why Buffalo didnt trade for Troy earlier.... Im almost positive Alex Smith will either be replaced this year, definately next year. He wont be able to beat the big teams. Maybe Troy gets a shot

Smith vs. Smith in 2011 for the starting QB job. Interesting. I like the pickup of Troy Smith. May not mean a lot if Alex goes out this year and really takes control of the team but he'll have to show me for me to be convinced he's the future. If not give the kid Troy an opportunity and see what he does. They already believe he's better than Nate Davis by cutting him and I don't think it'll take a whole lot from Troy to beat out Carr for the #2 job. That may not happen this year but certainly by next year it will.

he's going to need some time to learn the offense. i wouldn't expect him to be ready to challenge for starting QB anytime soon. however, if the season goes downhill - and alex smith is the most likely culprit for that to occur - then he'll get an audition late in the season.
