Who is working for free today? (1 Viewer)

I'm on commission, so an extra day to sell!

I'll probably make 10's of extra dollars today. Whohoooooo babeee!!!!!

Aren't there young minds thirsting for knowledge from the wellspring that is you.  think of the children.
I miss the least amount of time. I took a day after I went to see Mia-Dal with a Cowboys fan visiting me. Maybe 1 other day, most of these teachers are gone all the time. We have permanent subs at the school everyday and even in the rare case we are fully staffed, principal just puts them in the classroom to help assist.

I'm not going to continue this for much longer. Time better spent building my business but I don't want to fire up that thread today.

I thought schools are required to have class a set # of days in the school year, wouldn't the inclusion of the 29th of February just mean you hit summer break a day earlier in the calendar?

When I taught, we had a set number of classroom days/ year, something like 188.  That number didn't go up on a leap year.  You are, in all probability getting an extra day off this year.

Are you really this ignorant?

How about just a bit of foreshadowing, then.
I don't get along with the administration. My 20+ years in the business world only make me a cynic when they speak in riddles to the young 22-25 year old females fresh out of college and most never worked in an environment like this so I have to WAKE THEM UP on how things really work. I formed an unofficial committee of disgruntled teachers called the Committee for Teacher's Well Being. We meet and I share the ways of the Darkside/real world with them.

I am one of the oldest teachers on staff despite having very little experience. I also was treated with kid gloves at my 1st school. Looking back I was so lucky to have landed there to start. I have been told I probably will never work in a school like that again. This principal actually expects folks to come in on the weekends...are you bleeping kidding me? He knows better than to ask me.

My test scores are thru the roof over last year so they grin and bear it. Honestly, they went thru 4 different 7th grade math teachers last year, it wasn't that hard to get the kids over the whopping score of ZERO, I #### you not. These kids completely cashed it in last year and we are seeing that with the now 8th graders who stunk last year. I am trying to make sure that doesn't continue but the administration is the worst. Especially the Asst Principal who looks like the wife of the midget in Bad Santa, she and I are absolute enemies. She read out loud at a big school meeting the wrong numbers for my kids' scores so I corrected her in front of everyone

MoP something I learned in the military which applies to any bureaucracy. Always know every rule and then use them to your advantage.

I didn't see you complaining when you got an extra 6 hours for FREE the last 3 years.

Adding an extra day to the calendar every four years compensates for the fact that a period of 365 days is shorter than a tropical year by almost 6 hours.

Considering my school all but requires weekends and 12 hour work days to actually accomplish everything they want done in a day, we will agree to disagree.

My school even has the kids show up for an extra period that isn't on the School District daily schedule. I work at a charter school and most days are between 8-10 hours for me, no spin. I see some teachers working until after 6PM and that's after showing up at the required 7AM.

188 days*  7-8 hours a day is total BSpit where I am. I joked at a teacher's meeting that we basically were working the summer hours ahead of time...again the administration dislikes my sarcasm.

Right.  Your school is different than all the others.  I did it for four years chief.  Sack up or find another hobby where you're not neglecting kids with your personal vendettas.

so you basically work the same hours as everyone else here.

Wait, you're really a teacher?
I get this question a lot Cap from folks here and in real life. Especially those that know my sales background in mortgages. I can only tell you this...after what happened in my personal life I felt I needed to make some changes and take a step back from the fast lifestyle of sales which always lead to extra curricular activities, none of them super healthy for a married man or any man really. I had a teacher at my last school who asked me why I would stay in teaching if I could go make more money elsewhere and my reply was simple, I feel guilty about some of my decisions in life and I wanted to give back if I could and help some folks who needed it most which is why I chose this school I'm at.

I get a lot from the kids in my class. I love them and I can't wait to see them hit a homerun on their State Exams in the next few weeks. And there is no doubt it is going to look mighty good on the old resume, but it's not about me, it's about them. It's about a different type of teacher that walked thru the door this year, one with words of encouragement and a "We Can" attitude that has permeated and leaked all over the middle school grades where a staff of 20 stood at the start of the year and now only 5 of us remain from the 1st week of school. The kids said I would leave early in the year, fortunately I keep my word but I wanted to quit like the others many times over. I don't cry on this board much anymore. I'm a lucky man and I get to see so much in life, I've seen a lot already and I get to relay that info and inject that knowledge into these kids, god help them  :D

I'm probably one of the luckiest guys/folks on this board and it's a shame I don't realize that 24 hours a day and manage my emotions better in real life situations...did I really just say all that? I guess I did.

"Yeah, I thought he was gonna give me some advice on navigating the political BS around the school but we got into the faculty lounge and he just dropped his pants and started screaming about how he knew I was the one who took a can of tuna fish to the movie theater"

Right.  Your school is different than all the others.  I did it for four years chief.  Sack up or find another hobby where you're not neglecting kids with your personal vendettas.
I appreciate the humor and your 4 years of service but if you think my kids get neglected in any way, shape or form, you have got another thing coming buddy. I go way out of my way to have the best of everything for these kids. Free school supplies, donations of all sorts I am able to hustle thru my business contacts, I would like to be a Principal but I can't seem to get around the extra degree I need on top although starting my own charter school would solve that problem...don't tempt me. The MOP School of Hard Knocks might just be born from this post, thank you!

Part of the appeal for $36k a year is about 12 weeks off, otherwise I would expect $50k and no less. I don't want to work 2,000+ hours in 9 months...there's a reason we don't punch a clock in this pace and just initial a book when we walk in the door. We punched at my last school and the principal would sometimes make us leave. She would ask if we were overworked or needed an assistant for a day or two to clear out paperwork, this new place is terrible.

sounds like you should look for a new job.

Maybe this lady can help you write a letter.

I don't get along with the administration. I find this hard to believe

She read out loud at a big school meeting the wrong numbers for my kids' scores so I corrected her in front of everyone My CEO made a simple error that had no effect on anything at a company all-hands, there were about 2,500 people there... I stood up and let him know what an idiot he was. I've since been promoted twice and given an extra 10,000 stock options, in my imagination.

FYI...I'm 41 years old. What is expected of a teacher for roughly $35k-$40k is unreal. We had so many teachers quit that I actually do something very unique and got out of a lot of paperwork which I die under throughout the year. Most of my tests are 1-2 question quiz/exit tickets.

We had the 6th grade Math guy quit so I asked if I could step in since the 6th/7th grade curriculum are almost the same. Same 5 Common Core subjects, just a little nuance between the two. Principal was against it but quickly was watching test scores slip and fall. This is the business guy in me that just bleeds all over the school, I can't help it. Classes are 1 hour and 40 minutes, I usually cover the topic of the day inside of 15 minutes on the board, stay up there too long and kids zone out or find other things to do.  I work them in groups of 3-5 the rest of the time with all the stations focused on what we are doing. They move every 10-20 minutes to a new station or rotation, the bottom 10-20% of the class will work closely in a group with me, alleviates a lot of behavior headaches much to the chagrin of other teachers. I use this as a base for everything and I can bring topics in and out quickly.

-Teachers thought I was crazy at first doing this in Middle School, more like an elementary schedule or classroom but truth is middle school kids go home and watch cartoons still so making the room fun and not keeping them locked down in their seats helps.

So what I do is teach for 20-30 minutes and then I rotate over to the 6th grade and teach there for another 20-30, rotate thru 2 classrooms. I have 1 full time assistant who is a 64 year old black man who is a spitting image of Scatman Crothers from the Shining. He tells dirty jokes and also wonderful history lessons of America for me plus he likes to talk about the female teacher's rears so that's always welcome. He is my right hand man and also an extra set of eyes and ears, mostly to help me with Administration which he swears they will always put up with me while I am getting results but I disagree.

I'm going to likely just substitute a couple days a week after we get thru the state exams. The other days will be time spent on building my business.

Hey MOP here is a math problem for you.

Had February 29th fallen on a Sunday and not a Monday, which day before and/or after would be the first day you would be working "for free."
