Why are the "Comments" sections primarily used by dumb people? (1 Viewer)

Even when it is not anonymous. I must admit that I rarely read the comments section beneath articles on the innerweb, but today I scrolled down a bit too far under an article on NFL.com and had my impressions from earler, similar mishaps well and truly confirmed.

It's fascinating to see that the intellectual level of the comments rarely reach beyond the "you suck" level

I find it strange that it seems to be so.

Are they being repressed from expressing themselves elsewhere in society?

The world's new desire for upvoting, thumbups and temporary approval or laughs through trolling or base cruelty. This is what we've turned into.

But yeah- I avoid comments sections.

I think this is often the case. There are a whole lot of people that have their voices silenced in real life either because nobody wants to deal with their ignorance face to face, or because they suffer from low self-esteem/anxiety and cut themselves off from real world contact.

Those folks see the internet as their outlet and are free to spew forth without fear of face to face rejection.

Half of it is trolling by the Russians to sow seeds of discontent and divide us. 



The rest? People are by and large dumb.

I suspect as one's level of culture, intellectualism, education or just plain civility rises, one's impression that random other people are going to actually care what one thinks declines.  And thus, these individuals are less likely to take the time to share their reactions publicly to random strangers.

my guess is that the average person really is that dumb.  You (me) live in a bubble full of computer literate, probably college educated, relatively informed people.  We rarely interact with the other half.

Plus, anyone with half a brain understands comment sections are complete wastes of time.  You could post the most brilliant retort to a story only to be drowned out by a 9/11 truther so it's kind of a self-selecting population.

 retired

 super smart people with lots of free time that like to argue

dumb people that like to argue.

2 of those groups are more dumb than smart, 1 group is mixed and the other is smart but jerky.      That spells disaster
