I'd be surprised if poorer parents pay enough taxes to offset costs. I propose we ship our poor families to Honduras. Think how awesome our country would be then!
And, the thing about illegal immigrants is, well, they're illegal. And, being illegal, they probably try to hide and avoid taxes, right? Maybe if it was easier for them to be legal, we'd get more tax money from them.
Of course they don't. Something like 50% of births in this country are via Medicaid - that initial cost alone isn't made up for inside of 5 years.
Well, there you go. Let's close those "borders". Only wealthy people get to have kids.
matttyl's industry could actually make a big impact to bring this about. They could:
1. Deny maternity costs for all of those insured who have an income under $100,000.
2. Offer to pay 100% of all abortion costs.
How about it matttyl? Would it fly?
Neither would change the fact that roughly 50% of all pregnancies in this country aren't planned, costing an estimated $12.5B a year in public money.
Personally I'm for a maternity specific deductible being placed on all health insurance plans, of lets say $5k. If you can't afford that, you certainly can't afford the kid. Even that, though, wouldn't slow the rate of unintended, or even intended, pregnancies in the US which result in those huge public costs.
