Why do I bother watching the draft... (1 Viewer)

Stop listening to the media for a second and look at reality. It's obvious the Titans weren't enamored with any of the receivers. They certainly aren't the only team in the NFL that needs receivers.Yet the entire NFL passed on every single receiver in the first round. Then when the streak was broken, Donnie Avery, was the receiver taken. The receivers in this draft were BAD. Probably the worst group of receivers in a LONG time.Yes, Vince Young needs help. He has received a solid tight end, and Johnson, whether you like him or not, is explosive, can catch passes and will open up the offense. Also, add an actual NFL coordinator, get Vince moving around again, and the offense is ready to improve quite a bit in 08. A rookie WR isn't likely to help the team this year, and I'm sure at some point one of these malcontent WR's will actually hit the market, in which time Tennessee will be in a better position to pounce.Do yourself a favor and watch the NFL Network on draft day.

Bad - Worst Group in a long time? Clearly no Andre Johnson, Calvin Johnson or Chad Johnson. But plenty of solid WR's. Tennessee's draft was Joke, and your talking out of the back of your neck. If your football sense is coming from the NFL network then its obvious why you made the post!! NFL network is an echo chamber consisting of has been players and washed out coaches, great for game replay but analysis of serious football, not hardly. You might want to ask the Titans to help Vince young complete a few passes or his career is going to be real short. Question: How many running QB's have have won or even made it to the Super Bowl, and I'm not talking about a Jeff Garcia or Steve Young type that had Mobility. I'm Talking about your Dante Culpper, Michael Vick, Donovan McNabb type.

Question 2: How many classic drop back passers have won the Super bowl?

If you got the answer then think seriously hard about Vince Moving around again.
Why are the good running QBs you mentioned white, but the ones you have problems with are black?

Oh boy.Well, it was fun while it lasted, gentlemen. I will close with this, Colin. Chin up. The non knee-jerk types and real football guys are not nearly as down on this draft as the Mel Kipers of the world. I believe we added a very promising weapon for Young in CJ - he will be lined up all over the field, will give defenses heartburn, and will generally open the field up for Vince and the WRs, and White too when we have both backs on the field. And we added a dynamic return guy to-boot, which we sorely lacked all of last year while Pac was suspended. The Titans also addressed major needs on the d-line, and even added a WR that many say was the steal of the draft at that position. I think the WRs that we will go to war with will be very serviceable, and their may even be a real gem or two in there. Bottom line is, we can win with this group of WRs, despite what the media says. Let's not forget the TEs. Scaife, who is a good receiving TE, is now the number two guy, paired with Crumpler. We also added Blakely, and I like the look of this Stevens kid so far. This TE group is easily top 10 in the league if Crumpler is healthy.

I see. So Donovan McNabb has rushed for 2,962 yards in the 112 games he's started in Philly and he's a running QB.And Steve Young rushed for 2,922 yards in 114 games once he was the starter in San Francisco and he's just got mobility. Gotcha.

I realize it's normal on this board to bag on Vince, but even the biggest detractors have to acknowledge that they aren't helping him AT ALL.
I agree. It's baffling how they keep trying to plug their offensive holes with mediocre talent. Paul Williams, Courtney Roby, Chris Henry, Brandon Jones, etc. This team is a shining example of why it's worth it to swallow the bullet and GET IT RIGHT the first time. They had a chance at Dwayne Bowe or Robert Meachem last year. Now I realize the jury is still out on Meachem, but how do you pass up both of those guys when your best receiver is Roydell Williams? Instead they drafted some mediocre DB and used a third on Paul Williams, a guy who didn't even want to play receiver. Pathetic. I think part of the problem is that the Titans have an inept scouting department. They've hit on a pick here and there, but they've also squandered a lot of opportunities. I think Chris Johnson is a decent prospect. He's an exciting playmaker and I really think he'll add a new dimension to the running game. Nevertheless, I don't think he was a great pick for this team in the first round. I'm not a huge VY fan by any means, but the organization is hanging him out to dry.
On the topic of WRs- They've drafted a bunch the last so many years. Why on earth do you want them to keep trying? I mean really, what on earth would make you think this trend is one to continue other than "well we're bound to get one right sooner or later"?They'd have better luck drafting Ts or DBs and trading them for WRs or somesuch

Are we talking about the Reese that drafted Pacman Jones and Andre Woolfolk in the first rounds and got the Titans into salary-cap hell for a few years?

Because he's an idiot.

Are we talking about the Reese that drafted Pacman Jones and Andre Woolfolk in the first rounds and got the Titans into salary-cap hell for a few years?
Go back and look at the 2005 draft. Pacman was a GREAT pick. Outside of Edwards (3rd overall), Merriman, Ware, and J. Brown, there isn't another player in the top 20 that's better then Jones.

...and? What good is he doing/has he done for the franchise?

He had a fantastic 2nd season, which is one more productive season then most of the 2005 first rounders will have on their rookie deals.

So the year that he fumbled as many times as he intercepted passes was fantastic? Maybe I need a new dictionary. Meanwhile there are plenty of guys drafted after Pacman that are STILL producing for the team that drafted them.

The pick was down to Mike Williams, Alex Barron, and Jones. If they'd taken Barron (who as it turns out isn't very good), they would have likely passed on Roos and possibly Stewart, who are two of the finest young Tackles in the game. Of the 3, who would you have had them pick?

The problem with the Pacman pick was that Reese failed to do the due diligence on his background. The Titans organization has flat out admitted that some of the stuff from Jones' past was news to them after the draft. They should have known about the hangers-on, the posse, that gets Jones in constant trouble. Talent-wise, I agree, it was a great pick. But the way Pacman turned out was utterly predictable to everyone. Everyone except Reese, it seems. There were guys that had him off their draft board. The 2005 draft did yield our two starting tackles, but I attribute Roos alot more to the position coach and scouts than Reese. Still, great pick, and it was completely out of nowhere. The rest of the draft was so-so. You absolutely CANNOT point to Pacman as an example of success of that draft, though. The guy gave us one year and a ton of headacnhes for a ton of money. All in all, complete wast of a #6 pick. And I was a Pacman apologist for a long time because of the kids' talent. But if he ain't on the field, he might as well suck.

:porked:The guys from 2005 have contributed a lot. Roos, Stewart, Fuller, Scaife, and Hill all contribute plenty.

I guess I'm failing to see the logic behind defending Reese as a GM because he it narrowed down to three bad choices, and happened to pick the least sucky choice from amongst them.
