Why do managers stick with crappy vets too long? (1 Viewer)

When they have promising young players on the bench? Hell, if I was managing a team and a great young hitter or pitcher was called up, they would be starting over lame vets. If they don't work out, ship them back to the minors. This loyalty to crappy players is bulls--t. They might just have lightening in a bottle but are too stubborn to find out. Before you say, why insert a rookie when you're in the middle of a pennant race? Well, if the "crappy vet" is crappy, what do you have to lose? Now I'm talking about players already called up. It's understandable that teams don't want to start the arbitration clock on players sometimes.

The arb clock has a lot to do with it. But you're right, it boggles the mind at times. I guess since the older players have a proven record, managers assume it's simply a matter of time before they turn it around.
