It's not that message boards bring out the worst in people, it's that message boards attract the worst people.

Myself excluded of course...

Anonymity and at the same time, a disdain for familiar foes. I'd guess most dont show up to sites with hostility.

Part of it is anonymity.  People say stuff on message boards they would never say to someone's face or in the presence of others.
I would certainly hope so, based on my own experiences in this forum and the PSF.

This place also brings out the best in people, time and again. I'm sure other boards have their bright spots, too.

Because most people feel safe behind a keyboard and feel they can say anything they feel like it. I was on a board that someone said some pretty hurtful things to me about 8 or so yrs ago. The thing is though a few posters met the guy at a baseball game and said he was a ##### because he wouldn't have said those things in person to me. A lot of people know they hide behind a keyboard and they don't ever see these people in person so they'll say'll anything knowing they won't ever see them in person. People act real tough online but a lot of people who are keyboard warriors are usually the people who couldn't win a bar fight even if the other guy had one hand tied behind his back. Or just ignorant clowns

would be interesting to explore some of this more. I am willing to bet you see some common themes among age groups. I didn't get into the internet in my younger years, and by the time i did i already kind of had an idea of who i was. for younger generations growing up with the internet already available might be harder to learn some of those things (e.g. what some people say to others on message boards is pretty crazy. i wouldn't even say it behind a keyboard, because i am aware of how it would go if i said it in person).

curious to see where it goes though. Can get real ugly, hoping there is a pendulum effect and message boards overall get less nasty, and are reserved for those who want to partake in them. i had the bright idea of making some comments on youtube during the Sixers-Celtics series and holy hell, what these people were saying. luckily i understand it is someone who i know wouldn't say it in person, so you can blow it off, but it can bring out something in you when the attacks are personal and coming after people.

Strange world, have to hope there are more good then bad people

Age as well as other factors. On my old board there was a click group I'm 30 in June and some of these guys acting out were in their mid to late 30s and early 40s. I don't know if the one guy was just trolling or being serious. Said first he was a corrections officer then a cop (Seamed to always switch on which ever one made his arguments fit), incredible conservative and in the final yrs of the board started spamming the board with political threads that went no where. He seemed to also like online gambling and I guess a site he use to go to that the government shut down do to illegal gambling (It was one of the sites in that whole online gambling sting I'd say Obama first term at the least). Despite boasting how great was at everything he was pretty terrible. Another poster challenged him to come into a fantasy baseball league we were in to prove his worth. The dude was flat-out terrible. We later found out his wife left with the kids (Gee I wonder why). And some of the insults he threw at people I wouldn't even post online in any forum. If I were to compare this guy to anyone I'd say Donald Trump with the way he always bragged about himself and then got caught not being as good as some of the stuff he said he was good at. In the long run I'm glad I don't have to deal with that dude anymore.

I was on another Baseball board as well that seemed to have multiple younger people. That site was it was like you never left HS type drama and such.

I feel like this could be said about Facebook too and still be spot on.
It can be worse. I was commenting on an NFL type page on the Eagles/Vikings games. The butthurt from the Minny fans was unbelievable. I got suspended for a week for barely nothing meanwhile the women who got me suspended bragged about it. I also had some guys who threatened me my family and friends and Facebook didn't do a dam thing about that person until I personally messaged Facebook and threatened legal action if it wasn't handled. With in 15 mins the issue was resolved. One dude threatened to come to my work and shoot up the whole store and even said he hoped all the people he killed were Eagles fans. I told him chill out if you are this heated over a game maybe you shouldn't be watching sports for the nature of your own health and others well being. There are some bat#### crazy people on Facebook.

I’ve been posting here for over a decade.

Mostly this MB is full of really disgusting people but I’ve come to be friends with a select few really great people.

Ive learned to ignore the ####heels and appreciate the good peeps.

We tend to surround ourselves with like-minded people. The internet in all it's forms brings people that don't agree together. Just look at out Political forum; I am truly stunned that there are people that care so little for human life and the well-being of children. People just want to make snarky, gotcha-type comments just to appear clever on a message board. In reality, they are revealing themselves to be selfish and morally bankrupt individuals. And it's scary to think that they may be influencing their friends and family to think it such terrible corrupt ways.

I wonder if there is something to be said for social media in general, and it's ability to let people say whatever they want allowing people to grow more comfortable with that 'tone.' This allows people to think that it's OK to speak like that in public, when maybe they should keep their opinions to themselves.

I think that's true You see it lately with the political spectrum. I'm seeing groups made on Facebook or memes and other things posted people wouldn't dare say or put up in public. It's like they know they are safe behind a keyboard. I follow a wrestling podcast and the one wrestler the WWE is trying to push down people's throats isn't getting over and they've embarrassed themselves with their attempts to get him over. It's laughable at this point. Anyway theres some huge fans of his who go online constantly and look for Facebook, twitter etc posts as well as youtube of people making negative comments to just throw insults at people. His wrestling channel has been reported and can't go live at months of a time which means money he's trying to make isn't there. There's also threats to him and his family, fans and partners who do other podcasts with him and social media does nothing to stop them. He's at the point where he's gotten lawyers involved in everything and has a credible case for targeted harassment and plagiarism defamation. There's fake accounts of his name made and even wrestler and companies in the industry are sending him screen shots of their pages and saying hey get these scumbags and we'll vouch for you when you find them. We could go into other genres and all as well. The political landscape don't get me started. You can have a difference of opinion but when you are posting garbage about people's families, wanting to hang people like blacks are animals and other things from all sides you are going too far. There's a lot to be blamed for it especially in this country alone

I think two of the main culprits are the over sensitive SJWs who are offended by almost anything and then you have the so far out there complete opposite crowd that our own president doesn't condemn so they feel they have a public platform to stand on now and voice their garbage opinions. We need to meet in the middle somewhere. Most f these people the way they treat people if someone treated them or a family member the same way would lose it. Treat people the way you'd want to be treated because honestly if you don't you won't like what comes next either way. Just to mess with an SJW crowd I posted a music video of a Metal band I like. The whole video was about BDSM and other stuff these clowns get oversensitive about. I had people call me a devil worshiper and other things. It was funny. I liked the video because I thought it was harmless fun and the tune was pretty catchy. I guess that makes me a horrible person though these days. These clowns are no different then the PMRC back in the 80s. Yet have no issues with these rappers and other people degrading women? Kind of hypocritical.

I think message boards allow regular people to say what they really think, rather than message boards attract unusually terrible people. tldr: people are terrible

I was with you but this is where you lost me.

Not because you like wrestling, rather it just seemed to devolve into unconnected points that didn't make much sense individually or as a whole.

I was comparing two different genres where people have said or don't things that you probably wouldn't have seen prior. Point was I'm seeing stuff in both I wouldn't see in person from people doing or saying if it weren't for social media and the internet. I then gave an example of how oversensitive SJWs are and how I was attacked for a video and they made comments about me that were far from the truth and expose them. They hated a video I liked but have zero issue and don't say anything when some rapper or someone else does the same thing. Just people who have a different opinion then theirs.

Can't comment until I see the video in question.
