My brother keeps asking this question to me. Why do they call The Super Bowl,Super BOWL. In college they call them bowls. Why did this start?I thought it was because they play in stadiums that look like bowls but he wants proof.....anyone know the answer?

Some guy's son was bouncing a ball that was called the "Super Ball" or something like that while he was eating out of a cereal BOWL, so after tripping on his son's train set, he woke up 3 hours later and said "I got it! We'll call it the Super, er, Bowl"Duh.

It was Lamar Hunt's son you are referring to with bouncing his Super Ball. At least that's the legend. But the "Bowl" part of the name had been around for 50 or so years at that point, associated with college football.

I've always thought that the reason the college games were called "bowls" was because of the names (and shapes back in the day) of the stadiums in which they were played.

This site appears to confirm my guess.

Thanks Jerk, sounds like the Rose Bowl was the first because that was the name of the stadium and everyone wanted to sound like them so they stole the Bowl part.
