Why hasn't bowling caught on in America? (1 Viewer)

Took my kids bowling this weekend.  $150 for the family, there for maybe an hour.

Kind of ridiculous.
Please break down the cost because I'm finding this rather hard to believe. I'm not calling you a liar, I just really want to see the breakdown

The Lucky Strike hipster lanes across from AT&T Park in SF charges $75/hour per lane plus a mandatory $5 per person shoe rental (even if you have your own) and a $20 per person food & beverage minimumu on weekends.

For bowling.

$5 for shoes even if you have your own? Is that to help SF cover the $190,000 they have to pay that illegal immigrant?

What if you just want to bowl one or two games? Can you just pay per game if it's not busy?

I have never heard any one not getting sanctioned on their 300. That is an awesome series.
Yeah I have seen a few not get sanctioned after the ABC comes out and checks the lane.   I was bowling in a tournament where a guy bowled a 293 because he didn't want the ABC to come out and measure the lanes.

My best game is a 242.  My best series, which involved that best game, was a 599.  League bowled one year, average was 161.  I was a bit surprised by my average.  I would have thought it would have been higher since most frequently I threw in the 180's, but the occasional stinker really holds the average down.

Candlepin is the correct way to bowl.
Had this argument with a co-worker many years ago who claimed 10-pin took more skill. I was like :bs:  .

My mom's side of the family was big into 10-pin ... Some TV appearances on old UHF shows. But I always much preferred Candlepin, bowled in a couple of leagues. When I was a kid, Candlepin Bowling (Don Gillis), that one on Ch. 27 with Bob Fouracre, and ABC's Pro Bowlers Tour were almost appointment viewing.

I worked at 2 different bowling alleys for a couple years when I was in school. I remember seeing ABC come out to check the lanes, but I had never heard of one not getting sanctioned and there were always a lot of 300's and 800's in those houses.

If you have Amazon Prime, there are over 100 episodes of a 1970s game show called Celebrity Bowling available for streaming.  Teams of A-list (Sammy Davis, Bob Newhart) and B-list (Max Baer, Adam West, the Brady Kids) celebrities bowl a game using best ball scoring and win valuable prizes (Haggar slacks, Amana Radar Ranges) for viewers at home.

It's a hoot.
This is amazing.  Season 2, episode 8: Roy Rogers and Don Adams vs. Bob Newhart and George Foreman

Don Adams with a mustaches, gold chain and button-down shirt completely open.  Roy Rogers, Newhart and Adams all with some pretty nice form and spin.  Foreman just barrels straight ahead.  Great first roll for a strike, but losing it a little now.  Newhart in amazing plaid purple and yellow pants.  Sets up a spare for Foreman with the 10-pin, but Foreman completely whiffs it.
