Why is Calvin Johnson a must-play this weekend? (1 Viewer)

I realize he's a physical freak, but as far as I'm concerned he has NOT proven himself to be one of those weekly no-brainer starts, regardless of situation. Detroit isn't that good to begin with, but now they have their #2 QB playing against an Eagles team that gave Green Bay's offense fits last weekend-- especially with the rush. Yes, backup QB 'X' targeted CJ quite a bit last weekend, but that doesn't mean much to me. First of all, the Eagles will be expecting that, and 2nd, bad passes are bad passes, regardless of how many come at him.

What am I missing with Calvin Johnson, and why is he considered a must-play this weekend?

I have him and i don't think he is a must start this week....the only other WR I have worth starting Ocho...and I am not feeling him against the Ravens.

Detriot should at least be behind, so he should at least get a lot of targets, but I agree....Philly is going to be swarming them.

If I'm the Philly DC, I'd have consistent double coverage on Calvin. He might get a few balls, but it's going to be tough.

Philly's secondary is suspect. We have Asante the guesser, Hobbs the hobbled, Mikell and Allen the rookie. Now Allen and Mikell are solid but still Allen being a rookie is still going to lead to some mistakes. Asante guesses on routes way more than he should. Calvin will get his.

This is the perfect example of people reading too much into matchups.

I think if you have Calvin you play him. Although, admittedly, I am a ASYS type of guy.

Calvin is a player and has something to prove following criticism last week. Who else is going to step up for the Lions? Hill feeds him early and often.

The reason that I would consider him a must-play is due to the fact that most teams do not have 2-3 better receivers on their roster.

Who cares if he has something to prove? If he can't get the ball it doesn't matter. Calvin didn't have a catch for the entire 1st half last week, and that was with Stafford. The Eagles are going to blitz the crap out of the Lions. If Johnson gets anything, it will probably be in garbage time.

Yeah, another "I'm not going to do anything until the last 2 minutes of the game" day for him. I'm still not convinced he's an elite player in Detroit right now, but he salvaged his day.

Cutting bait with him as quickly as possible.

I endured this all last season and I'm pretty tired of it.

Maybe I'll keep him for next week vs the Vikes...

Um... So it took 4 weeks into the season before he does something worth his draft position? Against a Green Bay secondary that is routinely torched. Where was he last week? Every above-average player will 'go off' in a game or two. It's the consistency that counts. CJ has not shown it. But it's a promising sign, and certainly his stock will go back up a few notches after this week. But let's revisit this thread a bit later in the season and see if he comes close to his ADP. He's got some catching up to do.
