Will Andrew Walter ever have value? (1 Viewer)

chook

At 6-5, 234 he's big enough and he has a good arm, but we all saw how absolutely terrible he looked last year. He had a rubbsish OL to play behind, but I think most would agree that many others would have done better than he in that same situation.

I honestly can't see him having much of a career from here on out, but having only seen him for the Raiders and never for ASU I'm wondering if there's any Sun Devils out there who may be able to chime in and tell me something about this guy that suggests he could one day possibly amount to something?

As in, 'if he were to sign as a backup for someone with a good OL in the future and the starter went down, could he produce at all'?

I don't expect too many out there to have much of a view on this one, but to those who do...

I will not go so fat to say he will be a respectable QB, but the jury is still out on him. No way can you judge him based on that disaster last year.

He put up gaudy college college numbers playing in a pass happy system and conference. Last year he showed absolutely no mobility and poor decision making. He is a career backup at best IMO. He reminded me of Kerry Collins and Drew Bledsoe at the end of their careers.

He sucked at ASU, too, he just put up big numbers against weak opponents and got killed in every important game he ever played in.

Stick a fork in him.

I have much the same questions about Derek Anderson, another big, strong-armed, pocket passing Pac 10 QB from the same draft class as Walter. Both guys showed some flashes, but were ultimately overwhelmed by the awful teams they were on and both are now behind QB's that their teams drafted to be the Future of the Franchise.

In the right situation, I think they could be decent. Someone mentioned Kerry Collins, who as I recall actually had some respectable seasons when the right pieces were around him. That seems like a reasonable comparison IMHO.

We can infer from the fact that the Raiders drafted Jamarcus that they no longer view Walter as a viable starter in the NFL. Otherwise they would have taken Calvin Johnson.

#12 Iowa Hawkeyes at Arizona State Sun Devils

September 18, 2004 - Sun Devil Stadium

Final:

ASU 44

Iowa 7

Andrew Walter - [Comp/Att: 31/43] [Yds: 428] [Avg: 10.0] [TD: 5] [iNT: 1]

What a game. A monsoon broke out delaying the game, but we didn't care. We were tailgating and playing on a portable beer pong table in 50 mph winds. Ping pong balls are not aerodynamic. As for Walter, I don't see a starting job in his future. He lacks the drive and has a whining, piss-poor attitude :kicksrock: . He has a sling of an arm and throws a beautiful deep ball, but is not much of an athlete. He's a statue in the pocket. Career backup.

That's what I was thinking (hence the thread).

Makes you wonder who would take him and what kind of situation he could get himself into.
He had his shot. With McCown and Russell in town you can count him finished.
Obviously yes with Oakland, but his whole NFL career over? Surely not.

Good to hear the view of an ASU  on this. With the arrival of Russell and McCown, Walter would be smart enough to realize his days in Oakland are numbered. To continue somewhere in the NFL as a backup he'll need to put on as much of a show as possible during the preseason. His saving grace might be the fact he'll be playing the NFC West in those games.

Considering the uncertainty of draft choices, he still might be the Raiders' best QB.
Agreed, but that won't matter after week four or six or so, when they decide to throw Russell into the fire. I would really admire Kiffin if he took a strong stand and kept Russell on the sidelines this season, but I just don't think that's possible, especially with a young, rookie head coach.

His future in Oakland is over. It depends on where he goes next. If someone like Holmgren went and signed him to his next contract I would definitely take notice as he has had a lot of success grooming QBs.

If he went somewhere without a track record of QB success I think his career would be over.

Andrew Walter got Patrick Ramseyed. The guy is so scared back there he looks like a nightmare version of David Carr. He's done at this point, hopefully he has enough confidence left to succeed in the AFL.

I like this analogy. IIRC Ramsey is slightly more mobile though

Despite good numbers at ASU, he never impressed me that much in college. Seemed good enough to get the Sun Devils in a position to win games, but then made plenty of stupid decisions which would cost them big time. Didn't see anything when he played for the Raiders to convince me otherwise. Probably should have been in NFL Europe for a few years.

Sorry to bump, but this comment by Vinnie Iyer caught my eye...

The Bears' Greg Olsen can make an impact in particular packages, but beware that he is not good enough yet as a blocker to displace Desmond Clark in full-time duty. Instead, consider the Raiders' Zach Miller, a better all-around tight end who should be starting and acting as a frequent security blanket for a young quarterback -- who just might be his former Arizona State teammate, Andrew Walter. . . .
Is there something he knows that we don't..... like Walter in fact doesn't horribly suck?

walter sucks. he is a ####### STATUE, he makes peyton look like the dogkiller. i watched every raider game last year  & while the team around him sucked, he was horrible. he can huck it, but that's about it.

I thought Walter was fairly mobile for his size, I saw a couple plays last season his mobility got him a couple yards... It's hard to do anything with that O-Line... I'm not sure his 40 time but I'm pretty sure he's got decent mobility for a 6'6 QB

Andrew Walter ran a 4.76 in 40

JaMarcus Russell ran a 4.83 in 40

Andrew Walter has SOME mobility but he's a pure drop back passer and he needs a new team/offensive line to succeed.

Walter = Bledsoe (if he's lucky)

I stopped reading that comment by Vinnie Iyer when he mentioned Zach Miller was the better all-around TE compared to Olsen.

The problem is Walter never had a chance to succeed last year...and whether he can be good or not seems to be being judged by what he did last year. That offense was a disaster. It's hard to blame Walter for that mess.

Honestly though, Iyer must be one of the only guys out there suggesting that Walter will be under center come week 1.

The issue isn't his mobility as much as his pocket presence. He has none. He frequently backs into the pressure and rarely steps away from it.

it's also his mobility.
