Will MJD's holdout be similar to Vincent Jackson's of a few ye (1 Viewer)

I can't justify even a third round pick on MJD is this is going to be an extended holdout. Are there any insiders out there who have an idea if this is going to be a long term thing or just another player who doesn't want to go to camp?

Camp is very over. It's game time. New owner, new HC, new offense. The team has moved on.

MJD is too prideful, and too ignorant to get the fact he waaaay overplayed his hand. I think with game checks on the line, he'll report this week. Jennings is fresh and ready, and playing for HIS 2nd contract.

He has to report by week 10 or lose an accrued season just like Vincent Jackson. All while taking fines every day. He will have to report soon. He has no leverage unlike Vincent Jackson

Vjax knew he'd get paid, cause WRs always do. MJD's only chance of getting paid is by his own team, because of the ridiculously short life-expectancy of RBs and the easy replacement factor. He'll show up, and I'll be a sad Jennings owner.

I recall reading a while back that the league week starts at 4pm on Tuesdays wherein to report in time for a week you must do so by this point prior to that week's game. I looked for clarification by the CBA and couldn't find any, although the 4pm on Tuesday time was mentioned for various other reasons. If someone has reason to believe I'm wrong about the start of an NFL work week, please let me know. Also I can confirm that the league year started at 4pm on a Tuesday.

With this in mind, I'm predicting that Jones-Drew will report within 39 hours from the time I'm posting this. Should he not do so, it's my belief that he's out a whole lot more money than just his fines and one week of pay. There are clauses in the CBA about forfeiting bonus money that apply, such as...

(ii) Continuing Violation. If a player commits a Forfeitable Breach result-ing in his absence from training camp and such absence continues into the regular season, in addition to the maximum forfeiture permitted by Subsection (i) above, the player may be required to forfeit an additional 25% of the remaining Forfeitable Salary Allocations upon missing the first regular season game. <--from Article 4, section 9a.

A player's "Forfeitable Salary Allocation" is basically is cumulative signing/roster bonus hit(s) for the year. Subsection (i) says he may be forced to forfeit 1/4 of this amount for holding out through training camp.

One big difference is that in 2010 the Chargers still saw themselves as a Super Bowl contender. They had a losing record when VJax reported and he was a key cog in their passing attack. So VJax had more leverage at the time since on the margin he could be key to the team making the playoffs.

It appears the new Jags ownership is taking a long-term perspective. The Jags are going nowhere this year or next. Sure, bringing MJD back into the fold may be the difference in winning a few games along the way, but it is likely only to be the difference between, say 3-13 and 6-10.

If MJD was just entering his prime with healthy knees and they could build the franchise around him for the next 3-5 years then things might be different. But he's not and so if they were to cave they would not only set a questionable precedent but also make a questionable financial investment.

I see some similarities in what the Dolphins are doing, trading way Marshall and Vontae Davis for future draft picks. They're not going anywhere the next two years, either.

This is a major reason he'll report soon. As well as the $261,000 game cheques.Unlike V-Jax's situation, MJD is actually under contract and has performance bonuses which will be lost if he doesn't report.

Jags forum

Let's see, from what I gather it looks like his base salary is $4.45 mil wherein his weekly game checks would amount to $261,765. Then his SB hit for the year, according to sportscity, is $8.31 mil. It's tough to know what precisely this additional $3.86 mil includes, but that would be the max figure regarding what I term his "SB hit" (this may include overlapping SB hits that add up). If this entire figure is used in the calculation (there may be already forfeited workout bonus money in this figure), 1/4 of that would be $965,000 forfeited for missing week one in addition to his $261,765 game check. I previously suspected he might try to gain leverage by holding out a couple games like Emmitt Smith did, but the notion of him losing an additional $1.2 mil suggests he'll report before the games actually start. I believe he needs to report by the Tuesday before week one in order to be credited for having shown up.
