If the Chargers win twice (@ Bengals, @ Broncos), and the Jets lose to the Bills, the Jets miss.
 I can't personally say that you're wrong, since I haven't looked at the standings/tiebreakers, but FWIW they've been saying on TV all day that the Jets would (and just did) clinch a playoff spot with a Jacksonville loss.ETA: Jets own the strength of victory tiebreaker over SD, so they definitely clinched today with the Jax loss.
Yes, SD is out. They aren't quite on the same level as the Ravens, Jets, or Bears. They got started too late.
I do believe SD can still pass the Chiefs by winning out and the Chiefs losing week 17
Yes the Chargers can be division champs.

Well I trusted the Yahoo playoff scenario generator. In the event that the Chargers and Jets tie for the wild card at 10-6, we go to tiebreakers.

head2head: n/a

AFC record: both with 4 losses

common games - minimum of four:

Jets 1-0 (beat the Broncos)

Chargers 0-1 (lost to the Patriots)

Not enough common games.

Strength of victory:

Jets: 12+7+4+5+3+4+5+5+3+11=59 wins

Chargers: 8+5+6+5+3+8+9+5+3+3=55 wins

I'm not sure why the NFL would call this in favor of the Jets. Only a difference of 4 wins in strength of victory. I feel certain they could make that up in one week plus the games currently going on. But I will say Yahoo isn't quite correct. I think its still up in the air how strength of victory would play out.

Well, looking at SD's victories:They beat Jacksonville and Houston, who play each other next week, so only one of them can get an additional win counted towards SD's strength of victory.

They beat Arizona and San Francisco, who play each other next week, so only one of them can get an additional win counted towards SD's strength of victory.

They beat Tennessee and Indianapolis, who play each other next week, so only one of them can get an additional win counted towards SD's strength of victory.

They beat Denver, but in order to end up in a tie with the Jets, you're assuming they're going to beat Denver again next week, so they can't get an additional win counted towards SD's strength of victory.

Etc.

I'm not going to go through everything else, but I assume there's enough overlap and mutually exclusive scenarios such that SD can't win a tiebreaker vs. the Jets. I doubt they'd be confirming all over TV and the internet that the Jets clinched today if it wasn't a mathematical certainty.

The Jets are guaranteed of picking up 5 more wins in their strength of victory tiebreaker in week 17, assuming they lose to the Bills.

1. The Bills get a win (over the Jets)

2. The Patriots and Dolphins play each other (Jets beat both of them)

3. The Vikings and Lions play each other (Jets beat both of them)

4. The Steelers and Browns play each other (Jets beat both of them)

5. The Texans and Broncos play today (Jets beat both of them)

So the floor for the Jets in terms of SoV is 64.

The Chargers are guaranteed of picking up 4 more wins in their SoV:

1. The Jaguars and Texans play each other (Chargers beat both of them)

2. The Cardinals and 49ers play each other (Chargers beat both of them)

3. The Titans and Colts play each other (the Chargers beat both of them)

4. The Texans and Broncos play each other today (Chargers beat both of them)

The Chargers cannot pick up a win from the Broncos, because they would be beating them in week 17.

So the floor is 59 for the Chargers.

So the Chargers need to make up 5 more wins from there. If every game breaks the right way in week 17, they pick up 3 more wins. If the Colts win today they pick up a 4th. And that's it. They can't pick up any more.

Jets clinch a wild card at this point because they are guaranteed one more win in their SoV than the Chargers can possibly get.
