Will Warner retire if Cards win Superbowl? (1 Viewer)

Trying to get a feel for this as he is my starting QB in my Dynasty league. Lienheart will cons me a 2009 2nd rounder.

Many players talk of someday going out on top, but when it comes down to it this very rarely happens. The desire to see if they can repeat usually takes over their thinking instead. And, if a player is still loving the game and is still competing at a high level, why should he retire?

Tying up a career with a tidy little bow may appeal to fans, but these guys realize that once it's over for them, playing a game they've played since little kids, it's over for good. While there are exceptions, it's very hard for most to walk away from something they've done successfully all their lives if they still have their health.

I'm counting on Warner returning win or lose.

No way... I can see him getting a monster pay day, then go out after that 1 or 2 year deal. This guy hasn't seen money like that since the Rams, and he has every right to cash in. On the flip side I don't think Arizona has a lot of cap room to play with. It's almost a lock that they trade Boldin in the off-season IMO. He's already said how he's not going to resign after all the stuff they put him through, he's can get them at least a #1 draft pick instead of him just walking at the end of his contract and them getting nothing in return.

Warner won't leave until they drag him out.

There are recent reports that his agent is already talking about Kurt shopping himself on the free-agent market. The Bears were mentioned as a team worth talking to by the agent directly.

He'll play somewhere for a few more years.

Apparently, according to NFL.com, they are $40 million under the cap.

To be fair, Warner's never stuck me as the sort of fellow who would care about cashing in.
 Not that I don't think he will take a big offer that is potentially thrown his way, if the situation is right, but I think he just loves playing the game.

A cold weather team with average at best WRs? That would be a terrible fit.

IIIRC, they have a lot of guys to take care of.

That's what I meant.. their 40 mill under but they already franchised Dansby.. he'll be cashing in and they can't afford to let him go. He's just one of the guys, their pretty invested in Leinart.. they have eventually hand the reigns over. If they can magically work something out with Boldin, he'll also be cashing in. I think if they offer Warner something decent he'll stay. I do believe he just loves playing the game as well... I can see him rejecting a slightly bigger offer to just stay with the 'Cards, he seems to like his teammates and community.

I think money and happiness/family are both important to him. He'd give up a little cash to be where he's happy.

He would only retire if no promising situations present themselves. That is for Warner to decide, but I would guess Oakland, Detroit and Cincy wouldn't be a desireable pitstop at the end of his career.

Perhaps, he replaces Farve in NY for 1 season while a youngster is groomed? Jets have horrible cap problems though.

Seems like he still has a lot of football in him and a lot of money on the table. With Arizona's passing game as good as it is I would be surprised if he didn't stick around for awhile. It's definitely a team on the upswing.

You have to be a Arizona Homer that loves Boldin because he basically is a lock to leave. NFL is a business, they have a slew of WR's with gaping holes on defense (regardless of how well they've stepped up this post-season). They need to upgrade at Defensive End, Linebacker as well as Cornerback. Boldin at this point in his career has shown enough to probably get them a 1st round draft pick from possible buyers, it just makes sense. Instead of Boldin commanding a 4 year 40 million dollar deal with an obscene amount of guaranteed money, they can ship him out... fill a bigger hole and fill that hole for half the price. Breaston has shown himself to be fully capable of filling the would be #2 receiver void with Fitzgerald on the other side that will be commanding all the double teams. They also have good role players like Early Doucet and Jerehme Urban. Add the business aspect with Boldin's statements about how he will not resign with the 'Cards and IMO that's almost a lock. On the Cap $$... sure they have cap on paper but most of it is already spent. They need to sign Dansby long-term and I'm pretty sure they're going to do it. They wouldn't have franchised him last season to let him walk now. He's going to be a huge contract.. they also have both of their TE's coming up as UFA's.. they're going to need to sign one of those or sign one from FA. If Boldin is a Cardinal next season, I'll be extremely shocked.Edit: I'll even sweeten the pot with our conversation and say that they take one of the picks they received from the Boldin trade and draft a running back after they released James and let Arrington walk.

]\\As a Cards homer I know how much Boldin means to this team. He will be in AZ next year no doubt about it. They are 40mil under the cap. Karlos is going to cost some good money along with Warner but other than maybe giving Dockett adn Smith some $$ they are fine. Either TE will be cheap and James will save 5.5mil. If Cards were in cap trouble I could see it, but they are not so it makes no sense to me.They will draft a Rb this year but I wouldnt be suprised if JJ is back.

FROM FRED MITCHELL FROM THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE… Bears general manager Jerry Angelo questioned the development of incumbent quarterback Kyle Orton at the conclusion of last season.”We have talked about Kurt a couple of different times,” Bartelstein said. “They felt like they had drafted [ Rex Grossman, in 2003] and they wanted to give [him] every chance to be successful. I think teams are learning more and more that you can’t ever assume that something is going to happen. You can never assume that someone is going to develop. Your window in free agency and contracts and injuries … your window is so small now. So when you think you have a chance to win, you had better go try and do it.” Warner, 37, has enjoyed a stellar season that belies his age.”We had talked to (Cardinals GM Rod Graves) over the summer about doing (a new contract), and kind of early in the season. But we just weren’t able to come to something that made sense for both sides,” Bartelstein said. “Kurt just kind of came to the conclusion: Let’s just put this on the back burner.

The Cards have no choice but to sign Warner — in fact, they may want to consider placing the franchise tag on him for one year. It might cost $14 million, but to do a short-term deal with Warner, the team will pay more than $14 million in bonuses and base salaries. So placing the tag on Warner is a win-win for both parties and it would assure the Cards that Warner will be back. We all know Warner does not want to leave the Cards. He has seven children and has become part of the Phoenix community. And I would assume the Cards want him back as well, with the understanding they don’t want to make a huge long-term commitment to him. The franchise tag allows both to achieve their goals and keeps the Cards from having to deal with the supposed market value of the player. Once a player hits the market, there is no telling what other teams will do or pay, but if the club can control the movement, it holds all the cards. In this case, the Cards need to take control.
