Willie Parker speculation....(homers please chime in) (1 Viewer)

I can't tell you whether or not he'll have a good season. What I can tell you is that Parker is 100% healthy, hasn't lost a step, plays for a team that loves to run the ball and is no danger of losing his #1 job this season.
On the negative side the Steelers play a brutal schedule, Parker will not be on the field on most 3rd downs, and it is unclear which Pittsburgh RB will be the goalline back (though it might not matter that much since Ben likes his TEs and Hines Ward in the redzone).
Tomlin cam out and said yesterday that Mewelde Moore is the 3rd down back. That leaves Mendenhall as Parker's handcuff (though he's going to have to protect the ball a whole lot better than he did during preseason).

He looked great the last preseason game (not positive, but I think he averaged 8 yards a carry in that game).

Mendenhall fumbled 3 times this preseason but I read somewhere that he didnt fumble at all in college. Is that a fact? Is there some way to look that up or someone who is a stat hound here who might know the truth about it?
I just think it is being blown way out of proportion here. I only saw one of his fumbles this preaseason, so i dont know if he just can't hang onto the ball or what, but the one i saw he was coming out of a spin move and just got a helmet right on the ball.

The other two were not forced, he wasn't holding on to the ball real well, just put them on the ground after contact...I hate fumbles with a passion
That said, RM has moves and burst, I would look to him as the cuff

I'm a homer.I wouldn't want Wee-Wee Parker as anything more than a low#2/high#3 at rb. He doesn't catch many passes and will probably come out at the goaline.

Homer's don't call a guy with this much talent and heart Wee-Wee. 2006 is truly not that far back. It represents what Willie can do if Arians has learned a damn thing from last season.Take 06 and 07 split the difference and that's probably about what he will produce. Pitt had 453 RB (321 by FWP) attempts, 1st in the league.Ran straight up the gut on 53% of his calls to the tune of 3.73 ALY. 28th in the league. Pitt was top 12 ALY to every other part of the line.You'd think he'd learn. He didn't.If he will use Willie correctly 06 numbers are within reach with no need to sacrifice the numbers of the passing game.Is that why Parker was leading the NFL in rushing when he broke his leg late last year ?

Referring to last season with the he didn't learn part of my comment. Continued the same pattern over the entire course of the year. I saw zero adjustment in his playcalling in the run game either in game or in season.I think I mentioned Willie's upside if Arians has learned. Based on last year, I am just not hopeful that he has.

It was his first year as OC. Maybe he was hesitant to tinker midseason, I don't know. But I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt going into this season.

His first year as the Steelers OC.His time in Cleveland has to be considered. Different players, different situations, but the general trend of ineffective play calling with the interior run game is still evident.To be fair the numbers are more incomplete from those years to 100% compare with last season.As much as anyone, I hope the trend ends. I hope he utilizes FWP to maximize his talent and with some creativity.To date, there is simply a lot of evidence to temper that optimism.

S.Mehan was addition by subtraction there. He may have been the league's worst starting C.

Agreed.Simmons is simply awful as well. Faneca was below average without a Pro Bowl C next to him.
However, all of that was apparent by about the 4th game. It didn't stop the trend.
Plus it's too early to know if Kemo and Hartwig are an upgrade.
Willie is an extremely gifted back who if used correctly, even behind a OL that is questionable, will produce in a significant way.

Hartwig is an upgrade at C over Mahan. You and I are an upgrade over Mahan at C. Mike Webster's skeleton is an upgrade at C over Mahan.

Makes me wonder what the Bucs situation is; being willing to take on his contract despite the evidence that says he is simply awful.We'll see about Hartwig. Hopefully he stays healthy. Stapleton is far to unproven to be relied on.Kemo should be dominant in the run game. Pass pro, not so much.Actually the McHugh signing may be the biggest boost to the run game. An H-back that can effectively block would do wonders for the interior run game.FWIW, Pitt averaged 4.43 ALY up the middle in 06 for 13th in the league. So Willie is at least a capable interior runner.Hopefully both the blocking in the middle (Simmons has got to be moved to the bench soon) and improved playcalling result in a more successful 08 for Willie.Despite my lack of faith in Arians, I am cautiously optimistic about the end results for Willie's numbers.

I got him as my #2 but drafted Thomas Jones the round after. I think I will give Jones the start this week vs. a bad Miami defense as I see what the new offensive line looks like. I already know the Jets oline is improved and they play the weaker opponent anyway.
In the end I do see Parker getting about 1200 yards and 7 TDs rushing....solid #2 RB that you probably got for good value.

With Mendenhall currently on Tomlin's poop list, I think these are both good ballpark numbers. 7 might be a little high thoughEither way, he went in the late 4th round or typically later in almost every 1 of my drafts so I dont see how you cant get value out of himIm a little angry I didnt grab him in any of my leagues because I really thought Mendenhall would see a good amount of time before those fumbles started. I agree with a previous poster that I put almost no blame on that last fumble. The first 2 were def bad fumbles though - in the open field, 1 tackler on him, and the strips were made by offbalance tacklers
