Steelers' Parker is 'almost' 100 percent

By Scott Brown

TRIBUNE-REVIEW

Saturday, October 4, 2008

Willie Parker lobbied the coaches to play Sunday, but the Steelers running back said he understands their decision to sit him for a second consecutive game.

Parker, who sprained his left knee two weeks ago, said he is almost at full strength and that the coaches are holding him out of the Jaguars game as a precaution.

Barring a setback, Parker said he will play against the Bengals on Oct. 19, which follows the Steelers' bye week.

"I know I could play this week," said Parker, who has rushed for 263 yards and three touchdowns on 66 carries. "(The coaches) know I could play this week. I think it's best that I do sit out and relax and then come back (after the bye)."

Mewelde Moore will start in place of Parker on Sunday. Najeh Davenport and Gary Russell will also be a part of the patchwork rotation at running back that the Steelers plan to use in Jacksonville.

Fullback Carey Davis, who can also play running back, is not expected to play in Sunday's 8:15 p.m. game. Davis, who sprained his left ankle in the Steelers' 23-20 win over the Ravens this past Monday, is still on crutches.

Perilously thin at running back -- rookie Rashard Mendenhall (shoulder fracture) was lost for the season in the Ravens' game -- the Steelers signed Davenport and Russell earlier this week.

The two were added to the 53-man roster because of their familiarity with the Steelers' offense and to bolster the running game while Parker is sidelined.

Parker did some running on his own Friday during the Steelers' final practice of the week.

"I'm back full speed," two two-time Pro Bowler said, "cutting and everything."

good news, now take it easy and rest that knee willie
Agreed, as a Willie owner I could have really used him this week.... as a Steeler fan, they're going to need to ride him hard for the remainder of the season, so let him get rested up and come back 100% after the bye.

(this is useless, i know. sorry in advance for taking up your time.)

a hunch says the Steelers are bluffing and Parker's injury is much worse than they're letting on. no reasonable explanation for this theory, just a hunch.

 Willie owner in multiple leagues - could've used him this week, but if this additional game of rest means he is "the man" for the rest of 2008 I am willing to start Kevin Faulk (for example, 14 team league) as my #2 this week (also have Jets' Thomas Jones on bye in that league) and take the 3-4 receptions and 40-65 yards for this week instead of whatever Willie would have posted. Over the rest of the season, the points he's likely to post as the unchallenged #1 featured back in Pittsburgh will be a balm to my pain from not having him this week...

I don't think there is any spoin going on here. I heard that Willie could have been activated this week but the Steelers are being extra cautious and want to give him until after the bye to completely heal.

Umless something goes wrong in practice FWP owners will have him back in 2 weeks -- just in time to face the Bengals.

Defensive end Brett Keisel will be back in the lineup after missing the past three games and running back Willie Parker is expected to return after missing two games.

“Willie practiced (Monday) and he is going to continue to get better with confidence as we push forward toward the weekend,” said head coach Mike Tomlin. “He’s not 100 percent. He looked pretty good and we will push forward.”

Parker uncertain after aggravating knee

Willie Parker aggravated his knee injury and did not practice Wednesday. His status for Week 7 is now up in the air.

Parker reportedly stepped in a hole at practice Monday as the Steelers came off their bye week. All signs before the aggravation pointed towards FWP playing against the Bengals after missing two games. Now Mewelde Moore may get the tasty matchup. Oct. 15 - 3:56 pm et

sonofa... :goodposting:

On the NFL Channel Team Cam, the Steelers beat reporter Scott Brown, just said Willie Parker was vague on the injury and Scott's guess was that Willie would play because he was joking around about it. Take it for what it's worth.

Hope you're right, although it's hard to disregard the opinion of such a well-respected doctor....

This shtick is extremely underrated. I'm a big fan of your work Dr Andrews.

Just to be clear.. who was joking around? Willie, or the beat reporter Scott Brown?

Any Steeler homers hearing any rumors about how long Parker might be out - assuming he doesn't play this week? Just a one-game deal or possibly worse? I'll take a good rumor if there is one. :goodposting:

Nope haven't heard a thing other than what has already been reported. I am not sure what to make out of Tomlin's gag order. My guess is that the very least he'll be held out of the Bengals game as a precaution.

yep, all out of meds again... anyone got any "hunch-a-cillin" they can spare? he'll probably be back soon though.

As a Mewelde owner, PLEASE keep him out. Better yet, please let this be much more serious. Like, leg might fall off serious. Whoops, this might be the wrong thread for that.

Parker won't play in Sunday's Steelers game

Friday, October 17, 2008

By Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Steelers Pro Bowl running back Willie Parker, who was hoping to return from a two-game absence because of a knee injury, did not practice today and will not play Sunday in Cincinnati.

Parker is expected to be joined on the sidelines by left tackle Marvel Smith, who has not praciced all week because of back spasms, and Pro Bowl nose tackle Casey Hampton, who has missed the past two games with a groin injury.

Hampton practiced on a limited basis today, but he is expected to sit out another week and be replaced by Chris Hoke. Smith will be replaced in the starting lineup by Max Starks, who started four games at left tackle last season when Smith was injured.

More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
