With the 1st pick in the 2012 draft (1 Viewer)

Coach Pete Carroll has ruled out the possibility of the Seahawks pursuing free agent David Garrard.Asked Wednesday if Seattle would make a quarterback upgrade, Carroll replied "No. There will be none," adding that the Seahawks are "very set" at the position. They're set alright, if the goal is to select Andrew Luck with the first overall pick in the 2012 draft. Carroll reiterated that Tarvaris Jackson is locked in as the Seahawks' starter. Charlie Whitehurst will back him up.
I'm seriously starting to think Paul Allen and Pete Carroll are trying to Suck for Luck. This offense is going to look ugly this year and I think those two might be ok with that. To be honest, I think I might be a little jealous as a Bills fan because I don't want them to win 5 games this year and be taken out of the Luck race. It will remind me of some years back when the Bills missed out on the best RB prospect to come out of college in a long time (Adrian Peterson) and had to settle with a scrub (Lynch). Sure it will be nice for the Bills to get Landry Jones, but he will never be as good as Luck.Anyways... I know I'm looking into a silly conspiracy here, but could this be a sign to lower Seahawk offensive players? In a redraft I'm staying away from guys like Rice and Lynch. Dynasty though, I think Rice might be a guy to grab in the middle of the season while the Seahawks are terrible and Jackson is struggling to get him the ball. I think Rice's value will go way up if the Seahawks indeed Suck for Luck and get him.

I highly doubt they will tank the season to get Andrew Luck.

This is a ridiculous conspiracy theory, imo.

There are plenty of other suck teams in the NFL, I think Whitehurst

will take over the job by week 3 if not sooner.

The is team made the playoffs last year, and they are in a horrible division, no way to they

purposefully lose games.

I don't buy it. Coaches are competitive. They want to win games.

I don't think we'll see teams start to seriously consider tanking for Luck until the 2nd half of the season, when they'll have a better idea of their playoff outlook.

Handicapping the Luck race, I think all of these teams have a chance:

Buffalo

Miami

Cincinnati

Cleveland

Jacksonville

Tennessee

Washington

Minnesota

Carolina

I haven't included Seattle and San Francisco because they play in a weak division with no true powerhouse team, meaning they have a good chance to pick up some extra wins by virtue of their poor competition.

Using a similar line of reasoning, I think the teams that play in divisions with at least one other creampuff are less likely to get the #1 pick because they're more likely to pick up fluke wins. So the mutual weakness of Miami/Buffalo, Cincy/Cleveland, and Tennessee/Jacksonville actually hurts their chances of getting Luck. If we eliminate those teams from consideration, we get this list...

Washington

Minnesota

Carolina

I think McNabb, Peterson, and co. can play well enough to get 6-7 wins. So they probably won't get that top spot.

That leaves Carolina and Washington. These teams are both bad. Perhaps more importantly, they both play in tough divisions where they'll be underdogs in every game. As bad as the Skins might be, they're also a team that always seems to pick up a few wins. And while Grossman is not very good, he's shown that he can take a team to the playoffs.

On the flipside, Carolina will be starting a rookie QB who only played one season as a starter in college. Even with their offseason acquisitions, they're still not very different from the terrible team that "earned" the #1 pick last year. I actually think they have a great chance to be in the same position again in 2012.

My guess on the most likely contenders for the #1 spot would be...

1. Carolina

2. Cincinnati

3. Jacksonville

4. Miami

5. Buffalo

6. Washington

What happens if Carolina finishes last again? Whats going to be the rate for that #1 pick after he walks away with the Heisman Trophy this year??

I think it was Mike Lombardi who said yesterday that every team in the NFL would pick Luck #1 regardless of who was on their roster. The dude is just that good. The only knock on him is if he gets bored with football and wants to go build buildings or something.Andrew Luck is the best qb I have ever seen in college. The dudes physical skills matched with his intellect are once in a lifetime for an NFL franchise. I would wager his arm strength is not that far off of Newton, his scrambling ability is a little further off but his knowledge and mechanics are just pro ready right now. He will be one of the best qb's in the NFL in 3 years.

A bidding war ensues between SF, SEA, WAS and possible Indy. They are then going to look like complete idiots when they have to trade the pick away and ride Scam down the crapper. The 5 teams in the running for #1: SF, SEA, CIN, CAR, WAS.

Unless the team that gets the first pick has a perennial pro bowler at QB (obviously unlikely), Luck won't be traded, the other guy will. I don't think you can put a price on Luck. I'm sure whoever has the first will be turning down some crazy offers.

I can see the Seahawks winning up to 6 games max if things go right. I can also see them only winning two games if everything goes wrong.

Seattle is in the suck for luck sweepstakes. I'm guessing they just get beat out by a team that sucks just a little bit more....but they will have a top five pick in next years draft.

The Niners aren't a good team, but I don't see how they'll be in the running for the #1 pick. Division is weak. Team has a few elite players.

And I'd rather have Alex Smith than guys like Dalton, Newton, and McCown for redraft purposes.

Niners should win 4-5 games at least.

Panthers and Bungles on the other hand...

I am a Seahawks fan and I whole heartedly believe the Hawks are tanking the season. Matt Hasselbeck WANTED TO BE BACK with the Hawks, yet the Hawks decided not to resign him. You can't say with a straight face that Tavaris Jackson is better than Matt Hasslebeck. And you can't say Tavaris is better than David Garrard. No, the Hawks are DEFINATELY playing for a high draft pick, ala sand bagging.

Why not? Hasslebeck threw 17 INTs last year against 12 TDs. He hasn't thrown more TDs than INTs since 2007. And now he's a year older.

If Manning is indeed out for the year, I'd bet that they are in the #1 hole. He is everything to that team. There is no leadership behind him from what I can see. I'd guess they purely implode without him.

I think it will get embarrassing even. Whoever lines up behind that line is going to get killed.

I'd be surprised if the Bengals finished better than 3-13. I'd say it's them, followed by the panthers and bills as the top 3 contenders for 1st pick

Hass was lights out in his last two games, both playoff games. He was also finally healthy. Come on, you have to admit, his stats that you cited will be better than Tavaris's.

If Jackson plays all year, he will have more than 12 passing TDs. He will probably have more TDs than INTs, too; certainly if you include rushing TDs.
