On Jason Witten. Our source told us he had internal bleeding from the hit in the Raiders game that caused his spleen injury.

PFT blurb:Witten out at least for rest of preseason with spleen injury

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says he held his breath when tight end Jason Witten took a wicked hit from Raiders linebacker Rolando McClain on Monday night. Jones may not have exhaled yet. Dan Patrick strongly hinted in one of the early segments of The Dan Patrick Show that Witten may have suffered a spleen injury, and that it could be serious. A source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that Witten indeed suffered a spleen injury, which resulted in internal bleeding. Per the source, Witten will miss the rest of the preseason. At this time, it’s not believed that surgery will be required.

Recovery timetable:Observation: 2-3 WeeksSurgical Repair: 3 monthsSpleen Removal: 6 MonthsLinkNot sure if that applies to NFL caliber athletes who tend to come back quicker... but theres at least a very rough idea of what we're looking at if things are worse.
Holy cannoli...I hope Witten will be alright. That blows

Otis had apparently put him on his Hawk-Screech All Star team to be released later today.

Par for the course.

get well soon.

yikes...the Cowboys can't get out of their own way. On a team thin talent wise they can ill afford injuries to their high end players....

Al Harris had this late in his career when he ran into AJ Hawk....and lost. He never really recovered but he was near the end anyway.

No biggie you don`t need your spleen. It is not like an ACL tear. Even if his spleen is removed Witten should be good to go by week 3-4.

Why did they let Witten go back in on the next drive?
yeah, he WAS back in.But, Chris Simms played the rest fo the game at QB when his was ruptured (if that is the correct word).Boy, this would blow chunks on one of my FF teams. Got NO depth at TE.

Jason Witten suffered a spleen injury in Monday's preseason game and could miss the Dallas Cowboys' regular-season opener, a team source told ESPN's Ed Werder. The Cowboys still have not determined the seriousness of the injury, although early evaluations have indicated that Witten's spleen is not ruptured, according to the source. The star tight end is experiencing internal bleeding but still could avoid surgery, the source told Werder. If surgery is not required, Witten is expected to miss up to three weeks but likely would be available for the season opener against the New York Giants on Sept. 5. But if the bleeding continues and he needs surgery, Witten would be sidelined indefinitely, according to the source.

This is bad news for savvy redrafters, because he was shaping up to be a great value at his ADP. On the other hand, this could be enough to make him drop down a few rounds, allowing you to grab him as a part of a committee.

depending on the severity it may allow you to get him quite a bit cheaper while only losing a week or two of productivity. Yes, you'll need to waste another spot on a TE for a couple weeks but you can probably grab someone late as a filler.

This has Dallas Clark 2011 written all over it...its good that this has happened though, it makes it alot clearer for those of us who want to avoid drafting players who play behind a crappy o-line.

For you IDPers that was Rolando McClain who delivered that Spleen crushing hit. More of that to follow. :football:
Maybe, but will he be crushing those spleens in the slammer or on the football field?
Good question. From what I hear, the whole court process is going to drag well into the season and it's likely that he won't be seeing the slammer or Goodell's wrath until next season. No link or source, but it's what I've been hearing.

FBG Second Opinion post re: Witten

There is no standard timetable for a return from a splenic injury. Depends on grade of initial injury, how quickly blood resorbs and tissue heals and whether there are any complications in the next 14 days. 4-6 weeks isn't impossible, with six weeks being more likely. Also not out of the realm of possibility that he could be held out for 6+ weeks and through the Cowboys' Week 5 bye.

Nice job, Jene!

All of us preparing for drafts need to figure out how much to bump him down and how far Witten will fall on ADP. Right now he's going TE #6, but I could see him fall out of the top 10 as there are some good TE's with upside I'd be willing to take a chance on other than a guy who could be out till past his bye week.

If we don't see him before Week 6 (missing a few weeks and the the Week 5 bye), I'm not sure I could draft him top 15 or so. granted, if/when he returns, he could be a boon down the stretch but you have to make the playoffs to capitalize on that and 6 weeks is half a FF season. If that is a suspected or know reality at draft time, it would be RELLY hard to take himabove the guys that will be there in that 12-16 range (Cook, Celek, Daniels, Gresham, etc).

Updating a previous report, Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten (spleen) suffered a slightly lacerated spleen, according to head coach Jason Garrett. Garrett described the injury as 'very serious' and said Witten has to be 'still and idle' for the next eight to 10 days.

First funny Finley joke in about 2 years....For me, it actually furthers my desire to land Gates at 5.03

Witten/Romo/Murray should've never seen the field on Monday. That patchwork O-line was a joke against a first team NFL defense.

Romo should've thrown the ball away on the play that Witten got hurt. Granted, Romo was under heavy duress, he set Witten up to take that vicious hit. Again, the porous O-line is ultimately to blame. Romo could've easily been hurt. 3 series behind that dog crap line!!!

As for Witten, I bet he's back for week 1. Looks like he wont need surgery, and he's tough as nails.

:goodposting: I said the same thing about Rodgers, why risk him for a couple series when playing behind guys that won't be starting. I do not think that the few series these guys play or any veteran QB, that it is going to benefit them during the season. Don Shula said it best when he said "Sure, luck means a lot in football. Not having a good quarterback is bad luck.”

I don't know. It's not the type of injury that you just have to get to where you can play with it. Can't just tape it up. He has to wait till it's completely healed or he risks making it much worse. The hit he took didn't seem very hard at all. He could take several hits like that in a regular game. Especially if opponents make a point of giving him a shot in the mid section any chance they get. It'll probably be up to the doctors when he can play, not the player.
