The push to put a woman on the $20 bill gathered steam Tuesday, when the House joined the Senate in considering a measure that would order the Treasury to get the process started.

Rep. Luis Gutiérrez, D-Illinois, introduced the "Put a Woman on the Twenty Act" on Tuesday, six days after Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-New Hampshire, introduced a similar bill.

Both bills would direct the treasury secretary to put together a panel of citizens to recommend a historic woman to replace Andrew Jackson on the $20, which makes up about 11 percent of all paper currency the U.S. prints each year, according to the Federal Reserve.

Putting a woman on the bill would be "a powerful statement to my daughters and to young women across this country and to people across the globe who look to America as an example of inclusion and equal rights," Gutiérrez said.

The campaign to boot Jackson who historians say is an odd choice to be honored on paper currency in the first place, because he strongly opposed the whole idea of paper money has come front and center since September, when President Barack Obama revealed in a speech that "a young girl wrote to ask me why aren't there any women on our currency." ...

Why aren't there hispanics on currency?

Why aren't there any blind people on currency?

Why aren't there dogs on currency?

Why aren't there plants on currency?

Because. Get over it.

How about we compromise and replace Alexander Hamilton on the 10...nobody gives a #### about him

Although I may enjoy the irony of giving my Women's Rights $20 to a stripper for a lap dance. "Just think Chaos...finish up that Poly Sci degree you're working on and this could be your face someday"

Male-guilt seems to be the new white-guilt so I'm sure there will be a woman on our currency and a woman in the white house in no time.

Let's get a woman in the White House, wait until she is dead for a couple of decades, gauge her historical significance, and then we can begin this discussion.

I dont feel guilty at all. But the next president will be a women
I vote we put the woman on the 20 and not in the white house.

We could use this and cover a few of those.

Why the $20 bill? Right now, our highest denomination is the $100bill. Why not bring back the $500 bill and put a woman on that?

If you are going to do a replacement then it should be Hamilton or Franklin.

That said this isn't the 1940's anymore. A $500 bill isn't a big deal as far as money laundering goes then it was back in the day. Give us a $500 and put a woman on that.

People have less need to use actual cash these days. We don't need to reintroduce the $500 bill. And if we did, it would be a failure.

As far as people to bump, I have no issue losing Jackson, Hamilton or Grant.

I'm pretty sure the hip hop and pro athlete communities would embrace it even with a woman on it

Does anyone even care who is on money? I mean, my daughter cares because she's 5 and they're learning about it in school. I'm pretty sure she'll never care about it again once June gets here though.

If it does happen we need to make sure we spend a fortune on a marketing campaign like we did for the $20 when it changed, because people won't be drawn to using money if we don't sell them on it first.

Given the number of incidents over people using $2 bills (people thinking their fake) I can only imagine what would happen when people start using a $20 with someone else on it.)

The only way to get around not offending anyone is to go back to currency that just had random figures on them rather than specific people. Of course we'd have to change the "types" of people from what we used to go with as Native Americans in full head-dress are probably not PC anymore, and we tried showing lady liberty with her boob showing, and that was censored.

These are kinda cool: http://travispurrington.com/211378/2317660/gallery/2014-usd-proposal

I wouldn't mind a full currency redesign. There used to be a lot more variety on our money and some of it actually served a purpose (the "educational" series). I'm not tied down to the idea of the same 6 or 7 dudes on everything.
Boring

There's actually a really good podcast about currency. 99% Invisible is the podcast, the episode is called "The Color of Money." It goes into detail on different design features of money. The one point it makes is that the ideal currency would be easily differentiatable by denomination, and that basically, the US currency sucks at all of the key aspects.

They highlight that currencies should have a color theme, and a size theme...bigger bills are worth more, etc. They also are for the newer polymer banknotes, which are more plastic than paper. They said that they're very durable, harder to counterfit, and have side-benfits of being easily "washable" and you don't freak out of they get wet or dirty. For example, you could easily wash a bill off if you were one of those types of guys who would give Chaos a $50 and ask for change back.

I'd be for a full re-design, but I think with all the recent changes, that would be a long ways out.

The $2 bill and $50 bill should never have existed, IMO.
The fifty makes more sense than the twenty imo.
The only time I have much cash on hand is when I'm in Vegas. The frigging $50 just messes-up the flow of counting currency with $20 or $100 bills. I only hold a $50 in my hand about once a year, and every time I hate it. I recognize that my dislike of it isn't likely to be shared by others and that it may not be rational.

Different size notes would be a pain in the ###.

Sounds perfect.

All this talk about changing currency baffles me. The only time I ever even use cash is at a vending machine. Even my daughter's little league concession stand takes credit cards now. I probably take out $20 a year from the ATM and can get by for the year.
