Good news: Fox’s World Series coverage ratings beat last year’s ratings significantly.

Bad news: It’s the second lowest rated in televised World Series history.

Beating last year’s five game series ratings, Fox’s World Series coverage topped the week in sports.

Compared to last year’s five-game St. Louis Cardinals’ win over the Detroit Tigers, the 2007 series’ average (10.6/18) was up 5% over last year’s (10.1/17).

Ending the series sweep on Sunday, Game 4 of the World Series drew a 12.6/21, with 20.9 million viewers.

The Boston Red Sox’s shellacking of the Colorado Rockies during Game 1 of the World Series set the tone for viewers for the rest of the series, dropping the ratings significantly by Game 3 (11.2/18 to 9.3/15 to 8.0/15).

For the entire MLB postseason, Fox’s average jumped 25% over last year’s numbers, due in part to the lack of NLCS coverage on the network.

Fox’s 11-game 2007 postseason drew an average of 8.6/15 versus its 21-game 2006 postseason average of 6.9/12.

The NFL’s foray into overseas games didn’t seem to bump up ratings, with Fox’s Sunday regional game featuring the Giants vs. Dolphins from London only drawing a 6.6/15, slightly down from the season regional average (6.8/15).

We simply live in a time where you can't compare the ratings of today versus the ratings of years past, when you had four channels and nothing else to watch. People have too many choices on TV, too many choices outside of TV.

The best you can do is to see if it "wins its time slot" against what ever Grey's Idol Dancing with the CSI show is on. I heard on the radio last week that several games did actually win there slot which is encouraging.

While Colorado was a nice story this year, they were a weak team, in terms of marketing and name recognition, and simply didn't pull in the casual fan that someone like LA, SF, NYM or Atl would have done. It's a shame, but true.

I think baseball has to be happy with the numbers they did get, and root for a big market vs. big market series in the near future.

what they really need to hope for is any team that can build a tradition of winning which creates a brand name. the first time a team makes it to the big game most casual fans are like "who are these guys?" but if they keep winning over a period of several years, they become more of a national draw. take for example the patriots. in 2001, the patriots were nothing. they had no tradition. they were some AFL team added during the merger with a spotty history. their claim to fame was being run over by the Bears in the super bowl. but then they go and knock off the raiders. that had to make TV execs go ugh because the raiders are a brand name team. then they upset the steelers, which again is another huge brand name. so they had the rams and patriots in the super bowl. fast forward to 2007. the patriots have won 3 super bowl titles and they are a true brand name. people will tune in to see them play now.that's what baseball needs. they don't need the white sox coming out of nowhere to win a world series and then vanishing just as suddenly. they don't need the rockies coming out of nowhere to make the world series and then possibly turning back into a perennial loser in 08 and beyond. they need an organization like the rockies to develop a strong farm system, build from within develop over time and become a powerhouse that lasts 5-10 years with multiple world series appearances. build a brand name that results in stronger ratings.

They need to do something about the start time of WS games. It's freaking ridiculous to think people are going to stay up until 1am to watch baseball.
