Would England be better off? (1 Viewer)

The Normans came across the channel and defeated the English at the Battle of Hastings, placing William the Conqueror on the throne and virtually enslaving the Anglo Saxons for the next 200 years.

This was a gross violation of the Anglo-Saxons' right to self rule, and of their civil rights. On the other hand, the Normans brought a backwater of the crumbled Roman Empire back into the European fold, enriched the English language, and added law, discipline and order to a collection of semi savage Anglo Saxon tribes.

I was actually enjoying the other thread. I thought that it was actually some decent discussion that was managing to stay pretty reasonable. I guess just the potential landmine was too much because I thought that the two posters that described those that disagreed with them as "idiots" could have had their posts edited and been warned pretty easily without having to lock the entire thread.

In theory, sure. But in theory communism works!

Communism doesn't even work in theory. :)

There was no way that it was going to stay reasonable. I asked one about Hiroshima and the atom bomb (the thread got locked before I could point out that it was satire), and other people asked similar questions (in jest) about the Jews and the Holocaust. It's not an appropriate topic for historical speculation in a public forum.

It made it pretty far without getting out of hand. Obviously there are certain things that the owners/mods of the board just don't even want touched because of their nature. And that's ok. Although I do think that a lot of religion threads get EXTREMELY inflammatory and nothing ever seems to be done about that. But it's their board and their perogative. I just thought that it was actually a pretty good discussion and a pretty good model for how intelligent discussion can take place even in the FFA.

Thin line between "Normans" and "Vikings."

Normans were former Vikings but by 1066 they had become something completely different and were the best administrators in Europe.

William actually had to deal with multiple Viking invasions himself after he took over England and hated them as much as anybody.
