I'm thinking of trying to start five RP on a weekly basis. I would likely lose W and K (depending on what closers I could get for K) but I think I could in theory win L-ERA-BB-WHIP-HR-SV+HLD every week. Have I lost my mind?

You might think you will be able to win WHIP and ERA but one bad outing from a closer can really derail you with so few IP'd per week.

And you are guaranteed to lose wins and Ks, you won't even be competitive there. I think with that scoring you might choose to use six relievers, but I'd most certainly have 2 or 3 starters. Best idea might be to take an ace early, then some stud closers, then another good starter. But I'm guessing you already drafted, put your roster here and let's take a look.

Also let me add that relief pitching is generally the most difficult thing to gage. Take a look at team relief pitching from 2005 to 2010 and look at the fluctuation from year to year or over a three year period. Bullpens can go from top five to bottom ten quite easily, and holds in particular can be really hard to predict. San Diego, Detroit, Texas, Oakland, and Toronto are just a few examples of how bullpens are just maddening to understand. If you are going to bet your whole season based on relievers, well...good luck.

On the other hand, you'll be almost guaranteed to win L, BB and HR. I hate negative categories for this reason. Some of this depends on the hitting categories, how many there are and how many are negative. If you can build an offense that will dominate most categories and then grab a bunch of cheap RP at the end, it might work. But I suspect the league might have silly offensive categories too.

The league does have some silly offensive categories too.

As for the roster...

C-Victor Martinez

1B-Derek Lee

2B-Dustin Pedroia

3B-Kevin Youkilis

SS-Platoon of Tejada/Scutaro/Desmond

IF-Adrian Beltre

LF-Raul Ibanez

CF-Andrew McCutchen

RF-Justin Upton

OF-Carlos Gonzalez

UTIL-Jason Heyward

BE-Scutaro, Desmond, S. Rodriguez, B. Wood, Napoli, MelCabrera

SP-Roy Halladay

SP-CC Sabathia

SP-Ricky Nolasco

RP-Jonathan Papelbon

RP-Joakim Soria

P-Andrew Bailey

P-Max Scherzer

P-Week 1 between Brian Matusz and Franklin Morales

BE-E. Santana, H. Bailey, M. Adams, Blanton

If you are wondering where the 1st pick is in all this I drafted ARod at 4 because the value was too much to pass. The Yankee hatred then took over and I traded him three days after the draft

ARod, Pacman, Danks, Cust

for

Halladay, Sabathia, Sandoval, McCutchen

then moved

Sandoval, Vernon Wells

for

Derek Lee, Raul Ibanez

then moved

Wandy Rodriguez

for

Andrew Bailey

And I've been tinkering with roster spots by adding some back end RP (Morales, Adams with Blanton on DL). Yeah I've been busy. :lmao:

I have to start 3 SP and I should have a serious advantage on those 3 spots with Halladay, Sabathia, Nolasco. No one comes close to that in the league. Ideally I would move Sabathia for a big bat but he went mid 3rd round and right now the league undervalues him a bit. I actually like the lineup despite not having the big name player leading it. Lots of upside in the OF to go along with solid production in the IF.

Any more thoughts after reading that novel?

I compared some 09 numbers and I was fairly surprised by the results.

H2H based on entire season stats. Random comparisons.

Roy Halladay vs. Jonathan Papelbon

Papelbon wins 5-3

CC Sabathia vs. Joakim Soria

Soria wins 6-2

Dan Haren vs. Andrew Bailey

Bailey wins 6-2

Jon Lester vs. Trevor Hoffman

Hoffman wins 6-2

and for fun with holds numbers

Roy Halladay vs. Jeremy Affeldt

Affeldt wins 5-3

How much that relates I'm not entirely certain but the results are intriguing.
