Would you travel to Mexico right now? (1 Viewer)

We're down to the worm in the bottle
The chips and the salsa are gone
Now we know why J.T. sang "Oh Mexico"
We're two days south of the border
Feeling too good to care why
These Mexican minutes get longer and longer
As the days goes by...

supposed to go to Mexico City in a few weeks to visit girlfriend's family, but not going to happen due to work.

I've gone 3 times in the last 12 months.  Will again this summer.
I have a picture of the restaurant where El Chappo's son got kidnapped (along with like 12 other people) in Puerto Vallarta that I took about three days after it happened. I don't know if they were ever found, alive or in pieces.

Had zero issues with crime on any of the four trips to Mexico I have taken in the past couple of years.

Cabo, Cancun, and the resort towns are fine.  I was in Mexico City last fall for work and I although would not vacation there I never felt unsafe.
Mexico City is a great place to vacation.  No beach, but lots of culture and the food is awesome.

You can come out from under the bed, Cletus. Unless you are involved in drug trafficking, they're not interested in you.
I will never forget when in Mexico City for 3 weeks on business the one part of the receipt in English from the cab I took from the hotel was a notice "...to be aware, there has been an increase in kidnappings recently, mainly targeting Americans." This was 2009, and a few days before the inevitable Montezuma's Revenge hit over a 3 week jaunt. That is not a place I would recommend anyone ever visit, especially now.

Go there 3-4 times a year for work and love the food and culture. Most people that go to Mexico who  are looking for the Cabo-Cancun-Maya experience would not appreciate it though.

Went to Cozumel days after the travel ban was signed.  Was nice, folks were nice...they need the tourism...it's how they feed their families and run their businesses in a lot of places.  All depends on where you go though I guess.

Going to Cozumel to dive at the end of April. If all goes well, I'll report back. If. I get kidnapped, murdered, or drown i won't post in this thread again.

Heading to Riviera Maya next week for our 10 year anniversary. Not concerned in the slightest, everyone is really nice down there and I've got a few anti-Trump shirts.

My wife and I are mulling over locations for us to go to on our upcoming 40th birthday trip.  One of them is Mexico, either Cabo or Puerto Vallarta, but with Trump and the whole wall thing and relations with Mexico right now, we're not sure how well American tourists will be seen.  Opinions?  We normally wouldn't bat an eye over such a destination.
I highly recommend Puerto Penasco.  Cheaper, great shrimp, better little community most of the time.

But yeah, I'd go.  Just be a cool tourist.  Not an ###hole.

So it's either beach/weather or food/culture?  Can't enjoy both?  Odd conclusion you've come to.

I go to mazatlan every year. Seeing a truck full of masked policemen with auto rifles is a little unsettling the first time you see it, but I've never had any issues there. It's where the cartels go on vacation. Heading there the 17th, can't wait.

I'm in Puerto Vallarta right now.  No issues at all, other than the trip is almost over.

Bold. Sinaloa is one of the areas I might avoid, right behind the border pueblas.

"I wouldn't stand too close to a marked man."

I don't think I'd wear any kind of anti trump apparel. There will probably be a bunch of people down there who don't speak English well enough to be able to tell if it's anti or pro trump and then they'll spit in your sopes or something.

Always been a Caribbean guy but started looking into Mexico for a change. What's with the ####### seaweed on the beaches?

4 years of vacationing in mazatlan, I think it's pretty safe. I mean, don't be an idiot, but you can say that in LA or New York or Detroit or Miami or any other large city in the world. Don't get all hammed and wander around a foreign city where you can't speak the language. Don't trust strangers. Don't go to the market during carnival and take all your money/passport/ccs. If you want to go adventuring ask your hotel so set something up for you, whether it's a city tour or zip lining or a fishing trip most places will have trustworthy places. Avoid doing business like this on the beach. The beaches I'm sure are the same in every tourist town, people selling jewelry, sunglasses, temporary tatoos, cigars, everything. That stuff is fine, but I'd look to book other stuff through wherever you're staying. Avoid the timeshare trolls, they are harmless but annoying. If you want a timeshare in Mexico just look on eBay. If you want to buy stuff from the shops or the beach try to do it later in the day, you'll get better prices if you don't mind haggling. It's like fantasy trades, except we are haggling over a Detroit lions luche libre mask or a red wings poncho.

I will add that I have a modest vacation budget, if I had tons of money I'd probably prefer other places. But I've enjoyed my stays and think that Mexico gets a bad rap.

Most of the people are very nice, but there are people that don't really care for tourists as well. Just  like here. Most people know enough English for you to communicate if you don't speak Spanish, are happy to help with anything, and it's beautiful. I won't be worried about anti-American sentiment.

that isn't seaweed- it is the rotted moldy remains of tourists

Intrigued.  Had an extra week I had to use so booked the Pueblo Bonito Emerald Bay during Thanksgiving week.  Never been.

I just got back from Loreto.  Loved it.  Ridiculously cheap. Stayed at a 2 bedroom condo in Loreto Bay for $130 a night.  Unlimited golf for a week for $150.  Restaurants are great, dirt cheap. Drove all through Baja, down to Concepcion Bay, etc.  A little alarming the first time you see the military, including the check points, but everyone was supercool.  I'm a regular to Cabo.  Going there 4/1-8.

No issues in Mexico.  At 22 or so pesos to the dollar it's a no brainer.
