Wow flights are cheap (1 Viewer)

I found a round trip cleveland to Phoenix for 60 bucks.

Vegas 37 bucks
I wonder what the idea is behind this? Why would airlines lose money on flights rather than just cancel them? I get that sometimes in business you have to lose money to provide a service, but I dont think this is one of those times. Of course, the airlines are probably expecting some sort of bailout when all is said and done.

I thought someone had mentioned that airlines need to continue on their routes even if planes are empty.  Something to do with contracts and also room at the terminals or something

At this point, I can't even think about buying a flight for anytime even in the distant future.  Boy how quickly things are changing with each day.  A week ago I was in this thread contemplating booking a flight for later in the year......

Yeah, I dont know the rules, but I know they have already made massive scheduling cuts. No idea where the threshold lies.

Its just a dream to most of us. Something to marvel at and occupy your time.

Booked flights last week on Southwest for a September trip to Disney.  If things are still out of sorts I'll just reschedule to 2021

That was five days ago and Ive heard nothing since.
They’re shutting down flights to some of the neighbor islands, but some people (myself included) think they should shut them all down.

We’re isolated enough we could probably curtail COVID pretty quickly.

Ending up cancelling business trips left and right for obvious reasons.

At the same time, I have booked more flights for summer through the end of the year for personal/family trips than the last two years combined.  Loading up.

This is my plan as well. If you have status and double check your fair there's no cancellation or change fee. I think they are waiving a lot of these fees for anyone but make sure to read the fine print.

The trip I booked to LA at the end of this month for my wife’s birthday is definitely off. I still need to deal with canceling the reservations and attempting to get back the points I used for the hotel booking. Fun stuff.

We have a trip to Mexico planned for mid-May. That looks...unlikely. But I will be waiting to cancel it for several more weeks.

Just buy like 12 seats so nobody else is around you.

Then again those seats will be empty anyway.
Coworker flew on Southwest to and from Chicago this week.  20 people on board each way.

Had to fly to Michigan last weekend...flew out Friday on a FULL flight...flew back to Tampa Sunday on a flight that was about HALF full. A buddy flew from Detroit to Tampa 2 days ago...he said the flight was about 25% full.

Even 2 weeks ago, round trip flights to and from Atlanta from Tampa, the flight was half full on the way there and 2/3 full on the way back. Friend just got back from Nola and said maybe his flight was 1/3 full.

Have a ticked for SEA-ATL-RDU tonight. SEA-ATL is about half full. Original ATL-RDU was basically empty and they canceled this morning. Booked on the next ATL-RDU and it's about 40% full. Flight was $193 one way. Booked yesterday.

We had a flight to Barbados late April and return early May - cancelled online with full refund.  Not so much with the inter-island flight ...trying to get that worked out.

Took about a minute.  Pretty happy about the refund, but wife is really bummed about missing the trip.

Now Seattle to Atlanta flight canceled for tonight so forced to go through New York to get to Raleigh. Would rather not go through JFK.

We canceled the trip to Jamaica. Flights out of Midway canceled the next day anyway. The hotel in Jamaica is holding onto our deposit and "letting" us apply it towards a future booking despite being within their full refund window. I expect that with the airlines - namely  Southwest - but not the hotel. These are unusual circumstances truly.

My boss flew to Peru last week and is stuck there. Borders closed until at least 4/1. Has tried to book flights and cancelled on him both times. Basically under house arrest in hotel room except for getting food.

I’m booked from Miami to Dublin in mid June.  At this point I’m secretly wishing it gets canceled so I can get the $$ back and maybe plan for 2021.

I’m in the same boat. I have travel insurance for 2 round trip tickets to Zurich in mid-June, but hoping Delta just cancels them before I have to do it.

Has anyone cancelled flights via Expedia yet? I have tickets to a now-cancelled LA wedding for April. I haven't actually cancelled because I saw that one of the airlines (United) was only covering flights thru March so far. Not to mention, due to volume, Expedia is saying wait until within three days. But I assume I have to cancel thru Expedia and not the individual airlines?

Are airlines requiring a vaccine these days?

Just looked at the beginning of next year at round trip Cleveland to phoenix.  65 bucks.  Crazy.

I bet a rental car is 9 grand though

No vaccine mandate on planes yet.

Just got a rental car in Southern California around xmas for $99/day.  Normally it would be about $35/day.

SFO to las vegas $49 roundt trip, i think $31 of that is fees on frontier. being active duty they waive baggage so all i pay is parking and my uber to harrah’s for a trip that costs me about $70 bucks for 3 days. Food will be the only other cost unless i get crazy gambling but this trip in early december is for a family function so i should be able to control my gambling.

My dad took a round trip from KC to LA about a month ago and paid less than $200.

I love to travel, but time is my problem right now, not money.  I just don't have a weekend without something scheduled and don't have the flexibility to take time off with the holidays upon us.

Taking my 1st airline trip in over 2 years next friday. got directs from Long Island to Orlando for about $150 each way. Use points and got the business class on SW so I could cancel if needed.

I hope its a smooth flight with the mask situation. I know we only see the worst on line, but I sure as hell hope I dont sit next to one of these mask police people who will flip out if I adjust it mid-flight.

The only 2 directs were at 6 am. Earlier then I like, but worth it for less physical time on the plane

Business class on southwest?

its not a better seat, just the top of their three tiers where you get priority boarding, free drink but more importantly free cancellations and refunds.
Not that you’d be drinking at 6am anyway, but no alcohol is being served or allowed to be brought on and drunk on Southwest right now.

Surprised people are still finding great deals flying. Must be certain routes that are still not super popular or something. With fuel prices skyrocketing, I’ve definitely noticed prices creeping up on flights for next summer.

right, just quoting the general benefits of the tier. The ability to change the flight w/o penalty was my motivation. And with the recent SW mass-cancelation issue, also having a bazillion points from my business CC and we have not traveled in 2 years, I splurged on the upgrade.
