WR Match Ups to Exploit/Avoid (1 Viewer)

Week 3 is in the books and week 4 is approaching, so I hope you guys are enjoying these writeups so far. I've added something a little extra this week. I've pulled out what I feel are some "Sleepers" this week and highlighted them in RED. Hope you guys and enjoy and discuss.

Houston @ ATL:

Fantasy Land, put the wife and kids to bed, because we have Joey Harrington and the Atlanta Dirty Birds against Matt Shaub and the GreenJohnsonless Houston Texans in what should be a barn burner! :goodposting: All joking aside, this is going to be an ugly game folks.

Daniels/Davis: Andre Davis made the most out of his five targets last week filling in for the injured Andre Johnson by catching four passes for 70 yards. TE Owen Daniels led all Texan receivers catching seven passes for 56 yards. The passing game for the Texans is just not the same without Andre Johnson. Add an Ahmad Green injury to the team and it's not looking good for the Texans who started out quickly. I can see Owen Daniels making a trip to the end zone along with 60+ yards. Davis should have a chance to rack up some yards, but I don't see him finding pay dirt.

White/Crump/Jenkins: I can't believe how bad the Panther secondary looked against this trio last Sunday. You know something is just not right when Joey freaking Harrington passes for 330+ yards and two TDs. I highly doubt he has this much success this week, but I can see all three getting involved. I like Crump getting into the end zone this week, but don't bother starting the rest of these guys. I see Dunn and Norwood doing most of the damage this week.

Sleeper Alert: Crumpler - 5 receptions, 50 yards, TD

G.B. @ Minnesota:

I must admit, I have been most impressed by the Packers who may be the most underrated 3-0 team in the league. They have a fierce Viking defense though this week, and I for one think they struggle a bit this week offensively.

Driver/Jennings/Jones: Donald Driver has been on fire to start the season and is showing no sign of his injury in pre-season. Greg Jennings is now back in the lineup as well and picked up where he left off last year catching a TD in his first game back last week. The rookie James Jones injured his shoulder last week but looked good in the offense against the Chargers last week. This is a tough defense that the Pack face this week, don't expect another three TD performance from Favre this week, but two would not be stretching it. Driver should be able to haul in 80+ yards and a TD, while Jennings will chip in 60+ yards and a TD as well. I would start Jennings this week due to the match up, and you of course can never bench Driver. I think he'll have a solid game this week.

Wade/Shiancoe: I see the Vikes running the ball this week to keep the Packer offense off the field, so by no means should you have any thoughts of starting a Viking WR this week. Understood? Good.

Oakland @ Miami:

This has the possibility of being a shoot-out between Trent Green and Daunte Culpepper.

Curry/Porter/Jordan: After a fast start for Ronald Curry, he has slowed down considerably the last two weeks. I would again stick with him this week as a WR3/Flex option as I see an 80+ yard one TD game from the former UNC football/basketball star. Porter meanwhile is getting yards but nothing else. He should not be on a fantasy team at this point in the season. Jordan who caught nine passes in the first game has been held to exactly three since.

Chambers/Booker: Chris Chambers is slowly becoming an every week must start as last week he cracked the 100 yards mark yet again. He has another juicy match up this week against an underachieving Raider secondary. Booker is also getting heavily targeted in the offense as last week he was thrown to 10 times and caught five passes for sixty yards. There’s a good chance Chambers and Booker may find the end zone this week, and both make solid starts.

Sleeper Alert: Marty Booker - 6 catches 80 yards, TD (just a gut feeling here)

Chicago @ Detroit:

The Chicago pass defense gets another stern test Sunday as they face passing happy Mike Martz and the Detroit Lions. Brian Griese will also make his season debut for the Bears who have apparently grown tired of Rex Grossman and his turnover ways.

Berrian/Moose: It's going to be hard to try and figure this out with Brian Griese now taking over this offense. Bernard Berrian is Chicago's best receiver so look for Griese to try and get him the ball down field. Moose is not an option right now in a fantasy lineup, but he could develop some chemistry with Griese. Take a wait and see approach with Moose.

Williams/CJ2/McDonald/Furrey: Ok, it's official. The Bears passing defense is not that great. The Bears had a hard time keeping up with TO last week, and now they will have to keep up with four solid WRs in pass friendly offense. Roy Williams should be able to go over 100 yards and find the end zone at least once for the Lions. You will have to check the injury status for CJ2, and even if he plays, I think he may be limited. This will only increase the value for McDonald and Furrey.

Sleeper Alert: Shaun McDonald - 7 receptions, 70 yards, TD

STL @ Dallas:

This game should be fun to watch and screams shootout. Rams QB Mark Bulger is due for a bounce back game and playing at home against a bad Dallas secondary should do wonders for Bulger. Tony Romo continues to remain on fire and should have a field day against the Rams passing to TO.

Holt/Bruce: This is a no-brainer. Start both of these guys. Especially now that RB Steven Jackson is out for a couple of weeks. This only means that the Rams will pass more in my opinion. Holt has yet to see his first 100 yard game, but this week is a virtual lock if you ask me. Bruce will benefit from all the attention being given to Holt and has a shot at getting into the end zone this week.

TO/Witten/Crayton: TO should without a doubt post some sick numbers this week. I'm talking 100+ yards and two TDs. There is nobody in the Ram secondary that can match up with TO. If the Rams decide to double and triple TO, look for Witten to be the beneficiary and post some nice yards with a possible score. The Patrick Crayton hype is slowly wearing down, as Crayton has been unable to produce within the offense. Crayton is not a viable option right now in a fantasy lineup.

Baltimore @ Cleveland:

The Ravens better not underestimate this scrappy bunch. After getting blown out by the Steelers in week one, this Brownies have been some good football. Playing in the Dog Pound will not be easy for the Ravens.

Mason/Clayton/Heap: As long as Steve McNair continues to be the QB, Mason and Heap will be solid in fantasy lineups. Derrick Mason is averaging almost eight catches and 70 yards per game so far through 3 games. This is about what I expect out of Mason this week, and I do think he visits the end zone for a second straight week. Heap will catch his usual passes and should have a 60+ yards game with the possibility of a TD.

Sleeper Alert: Derrick Mason - 7 receptions, 90 yards, TD

Edwards/Winslow/Jurivicious: These two guys have been on fire. Edwards could be headed for a big day as the Ravens secondary is just not what it used to be. Anybody else looking forward to the Winslow Ray Lewis match up? Winslow continues to produce in the Browns offense and as long as he can stay healthy, he will be a force. It will be interesting to see how physical Winslow and Lewis will be with each other. Early reports say the Winslow has a partially dislocated shoulder. Winslow says he wants to play, but if he does not, you can bump up Joe Jurivicious.

NYJ @ Buffalo:

Coles/Cotchery: Coles and Cotchery both had slow games last week, but that was because they ran the ball with Thomas Jones and Leon Washington. The best part of the Jets offense is their passing game, so I would expect Pennington to air it out this week against the Bills. Cotchery is getting all the receiving yards for the Jets leading the team with 276 yards through three games. Coles on the other had is the one making frequent trips to the end zone as he has scored three times so far this year. They are both solid starts this week and each has a shot at getting into the end zone.

Evans/Parrish: Just when it could not get any worse for Lee Evans owners, Losman goes down with an injury. Trent Edwards will not the QB trying to get the ball downfield to Evans and Parrish. I can't recommend playing either one of these two until we see how Edwards plays in his first game. The Jets don't have that good of a pass defense, but Edwards is going to have to develop some chemistry with his receivers to move the ball. I see the Bills running the ball with Lynch more than anything.

Seattle @ S.F:

Branch/Engram: Branch converted six of his seven targets last week for 77 yards and a TD. He and Hass are starting click and should be in for a good game this week against the 9er's. Engram will be his usual reliable self and catch five to six passes with a possibility of a score. This game is going to be close in my opinion, so SA could be getting 25+ carries this week, which would limit Branch and Engram's effectiveness. Branch is a must start, and Engram would be a reach as a WR3 or FLEX option IMO.

Jackson/Battle/Davis: As long as Alex Smith continues to struggle, there's not much fantasy value in the 9er's offense. With Davis out a couple of weeks, Darrell Jackson and Arnaz Battle will be the go to guys in the passing game.

Sleeper Alert: Darryl Jackson - 5 receptions, 70 yards, TD

Tampa Bay @ Carolina:

This should be a good game as first place in the NFC South is on the line. I don’t see Delhomme playing this week. I honestly don’t see much of a drop off between Carr and Delhomme.

Galloway/Alex Smith: The Panther secondary was lit up by Joey Harrington and the dirty birds last week to the tune of 360+ yards passing and two TDs. Galloway has the speed and size to get by Panther defenders, and if Garcia has time this week, he could be in for a big day. Smith could be a sneaky play this week, as the Panthers have been horrible against opposing TEs. Owen Daniels two weeks ago had a good game, and Crumpler was able to find the end zone last week, so I for one would not be surprised to see Smith in the end zone this week. I say Smith gets something along the lines of 30 yards passing and a score.

Sleeper Alert: Alex Smith - 4 receptions 30 yards, TD

Smith/Colbert: Smith absolutely owned the Bucs secondary last year posting 15 catches for 261 yards and two TDs through two games. Add that to the fact that Smittee will be angry about his one catch performance, and you have monster day in the making for Stevo. Anything under 100 yards and a TD, would be a disappointment, even if David Carr is throwing him the ball. Colbert seemed to be favorite target for Carr when he came into the game. He's worth keeping an eye on.

KC @ S.D.

The Bolts passing game was back in true form last week, as Rivers threw for three TDs. The Chief offense in general continues to be just plain BAD.

Bowe/Gonzo: These two were very busy last week against a tough Vikings defense. Bowie is starting to show some forms of life. He was targeted seven times and caught five balls for 71 yards and a TD. Gonzales led all KC receivers as he was targeted nine times and caught seven passes for 96 yards. The Bolts secondary is getting exposed on a weekly basis, so Huard should be able to find Bowe and Gonzo open throughout the day. One of these guys has a chance to go over 100 yards receiving and I believe each player makes a solid play this week.

Sleeper Alert: Dwayne Bowie - 5 catches, 70+ yards, TD

VJax/Gates/LT: Gates has been abusing defenders all year long and this week will be no different. Gates should be able to get open against the weak linebacker core the Chiefs have and post some sick numbers. I'm calling it right now, Vinnie Jackson is about to blow up folks. He got off to a slow start but is starting to show some signs of being a great receiver. He's a great buy low candidate right now IMO. This week I see VJax going for 80+ yards and a TD. LT will do his usual damage through the air, but I think the Bolts get back to business this week, and that's run the ball with LT and Turner. All three are must starts this week.

Denver @ Indy:

This should be a fun game to watch as Champ Bailey and Dre Bly will earn their pay checks this week. Harrison and Wayne have been fairly quite so for this year, but each year one of these two studs blow up on the Broncos. Last year it was Wayne who caught 3 TDs.

Wayne/Harrison/Clark: The sneaky play in this group to me will be Clark. He's been gotten into the end zone in each of the last two weeks, and with all the attention Harrison and Wayne will be getting there's a chance he gets his third score. Now I know all the talk is going to be should I sit Harrison or should I sit Wayne? The answer is a simple NO. They are playing at home and on the turf which will be an advantage in my opinion for this duo.

Sleeper Alert: Dallas Clark - 6 catches 60 yards, TD

Walker/Marshall: For Denver to win this game, they will need to get the ball to Walker and Marshall. Walker was a bit on the quite side last week only catching two passes for ten yards. Expect that to change this week as Walker will have to be a big part of the offense in order for them to win this shootout. Marshall had his best game of his young career last week catching seven passes for 133 yards. He's a terrific compliment to Walker and should be started this week as well.

Pittsburgh @ AZ:

You know things are bad in Zona when the coach wants to use a QBBC? Is that even legal in the NFL? Blitzburghs defense is playing out of their minds right now, and that can’t mean good things for the Arizona offense.

Ward/Holmes/Miller: With Ward being hurt and considered doubtful, Santonio Holmes will be the main beneficiary in the offense. The Card passing D is not that great, so Holmes could be headed for his first big game of the season. Big Ben also likes to throw to his TE's so Heath Miller should be able to rack up some yards and has a possibility of a TD. Holmes and Miller are must starts this week.

Boldin/Fitz: Larry Fitzgerald has gotten off to a very slow start and has yet to find the end zone through three weeks. Anquan Boldin had a ridiculous game last week and seems to be the most productive receiver on the Cards so far. You can't sit either one of these guys, simply because the Steeler offense will be rolling and the Cards will be playing catch up. Boldin and Fitz will be very active when this happens.

Philly @ NYG:

The Eagles definitely took a step up to respectability as Donovan McNabb put on show against a helpless Lion secondary. Things only getter better for McNabb this week as they get a beat up Giants team who somehow was able to pull out a road win in Washington.

Curtis/Brown/Westy: Sweet Lord All Mighty! Who is this guy white guy named Kevin Curtis anyway? Man he's fast! Curtis carved up the Lions secondary last week as he was constantly getting past defenders with McNabb floating beautiful passes to him all day long. McNabb seems to have regained his MoJo, so starting the Eagle WRs is suddenly a good idea now against the G-men. I'm not giving up on Reggie Brown quite yet. I think he still has some good games coming his way, and it could start this week. All three of the above are must starts, but Curtis is the deep threat and McNabb has not problems throwing him the ball.

Sleeper Alert: Reggie Brown - 5 receptions, 70 yards, TD

Burress/Toomer/Shockey: What has gotten into Plaxico this year? The Dude has been a flat out stud so far for fantasy teams as he has delivered on a weekly basis. This week will be no different, and I see this game being a shootout between McNabb and Manning. Shockey continues to pile up catches and yards, but has yet to reach pay dirt. I don't see that changing this week, as the Eagles have done a fine job in the past of keeping him out of the end zone. Toomer may string together some yards and catches, but he should not be in a fantasy lineup.

NE @ Cinci:

Palmer vs. Brady. Should be fun watching these two sling the pigskin around!

Moss/Welker/Watson: This trio has continued to create havoc on opposing defenses. This week though by far is the best week to start this group. Brady is going to have a field day finding Moss, Welker, and Watson. Moss is scary good right now, and he should be able to abuse the helpless Bengals all day long. Welker will get his usual 6-8 passes for 80+ yards and Watson has a chance to find the end zone for the fourth straight week.

CJ/Housh: As great as these guys are playing right now, the defense is killing the Bengals right now. They have an awesome offense but an awful defense. Cincinnati may be without their stud RB Rudi Johnson, which will force Palmer to throw even more this week. CJ and Housh have a shot to crack 100+ yards and get into the end zone this week. The Pats passing D is solid, but Palmer will be forced to find CJ and Housh, which I think Palmer has the ability to do.

Anyone think D Jackson steps up this week playing against his former team? I'm tempted, but can't sit Marshall anymore.

I'm using this factor as a tiebraker between him, Bruce and DBowe for my WR3 this week.
I'd take Marshall over either one of the guys listed here. Cutler has been looking toward the Rook a lot lately, and the Broncos are going to need to pass to keep up with the Colts. I'm not sold on Travis Henry in this game, so i think they will have to throw to move the ball.

Marshall isn't a rookie.

I apologize, and you are correct. I honestly thought he was a rook. Regardless, start the guy. Cutler is looking his way quite a bit.

Is that terrible Dallas secondary that you are referring to the same one that has 8 ints through 3 games this year without Newman?

I don't disagree that holt and bruce will have decent games, but it is only because this game will be a blow out, and it is in Dallas not STL.

This is turning into a WDIS thread, but anyway...

I got Fitz, Galloway, DJax, Holmes, and Gonzo (WR=TE, no diff). Hard to decide who sits this week (can play up to 4, which I will, sitting down Travis Henry this week). For now I have Jackson on the bench, but I fully expect a nice game from him.

Boldin not practicing and possibly sitting out Sunday could get Fitz off the dime.http://forums.footballguys.com/forum/index...howtopic=347790

I hope you are right about Branch, but I disagree if Clements is covering him.
Nate Clements is overrated if you asked me. He's got this HUGE contract, but he's by no means a "Force" on defense.
Wow you must not be watching any 49ers games cuz he has been sick this year
12 tackles, a sack, and a Forced Fumble through three games is NOT that special for a guy who is the highest paid DB in the league.

Maybe that's because they don't throw at him.

Umm hes a cornerback who covers WRs. Hes locked down every WR hes opposed this year.

1- Burleson seems worht a mention ahead of Engram as he is the WR2...

2 -

Umm hes a cornerback who covers WRs. Hes locked down every WR hes opposed this year.

EVERY WR huh? So, how did Torry Holt do? And yes I have watched him play and don't get me wrong he's good, but not great. And I'm not saying Branch is going to go off for 100 yards and two TDs. He'll have an OK day, kinda like Holt did.

Two words. Matt Leinart. How bad is he this year? Last time I checked he was in the leagues first QBBC.

Some interesting stuff here, but some self-contradiction as well - notably, DJax is a sleeper, but not recommende with almost identical stats to other players who are recommended and are sleepers?

Minny is stout against the run, but not nearly as good against the pass - I'd expect that to help the Pack WR's this week.

The Bears are going to have to do something to score with Lions, and I don't think Berrian can do it by himself. Plus the Lions secondary is horrid. I'd rate Muhamad an okay play, as Griese > Grossman.

Thanks for pointing that out Stevegamer. I just fixed the post about Darryl Jackson and Greg Jennings. I changed my mind about both as I was reading through this post and forgot to take out the sentence about not starting them. I would consider DJAX and Jennings as WR3/FLEX plays this week.Regarding Moose, nobody knows how Griese to play, so in my mind Moose is a risky start. Not a good job editing wise on my part this week and I do apologize. I kind of rushed this one out this week. I'll try to do a better job editing this next week.

How many of the 49ers games have you watched this year? I've watched all 3 and your comment is laughable.

Try watching the games and not watching the stat sheet. One thing you're overlooking is they avoid throwing his way, he makes some fantastic tackles where he come from 30 yards away and makes the play on the other side, try watching the games, he is a complete stud.I have heard that fantasy football is getting very popular these days to the point where non-football fans are playing. Your lack of football acumen is showing, your understanding of the sport is showing but I guess it makes sense if you're just following the stat sheets.

I see the Bills running the ball with Lynch more than anything.

so let me get this straight you think New York is going to walk into Buffalo and throw the ball considering the bills just lost their leading tackler and the are the worst run D in the league giving up 177 yd/game on the ground....

The Bills also have the worse pass D in the league, so the answer to your question if Pennington is going to air it out is.. Yes! :whoosh:

We can debate the Clements issue all week long. Who knows, maybe Clements IS the best CB in the league and will hold Branch to a big fat ZERO? :whoosh:

The bears might be without Tillman, Vasher and Tommie Harris, Briggs and some others, If Vasher and Tillman are both out 2 rookie corners will have to cover.

This is great for Det Wideouts, but not great for my Bears,

Curry/Porter/Jordan: After a fast start for Ronald Curry, he has slowed down considerably the last two weeks. I would again stick with him this week as a WR3/Flex option as I see an 80+ yard one TD game from the former UNC football/basketball star. Porter meanwhile is getting yards but nothing else. Gotta disagree somewhat here.Curry slowed down because Champ slowed him down in week 2. Champ does that to everybody. Curry came back in week 3 with 60+ and a TD. If that's slow, I'll take it.

Also, Porter did get a TD week 2. Saying he shouldn't be owned is ridiculously harsh, especially with the QB change. It's too soon to tell who Culpepper prefers, but with his past predilection for the deep pass, which is the one thing that Porter can do better than Curry, I'd hold or even trade low on Porter right now.

Regardless, I would be cautious about playing Raiders on the road until they prove themselves a bit more, and I'd want to see a full game from Culpepper. His half last week against the Brownies was rather uninspired (118yds, 0 TDs).

It will be very interesting to see who CPepp favors in the WR group the Raiders have.
