Yacht Rock (1 Viewer)

This kind of music makes me so uncomfortable. Sort of reverse nostalgia or something. What's weird is I'm entertained by the reemergence of this genre. Ariel Pink's "Round and Round," for example.

I listened to that and a few of his other songs this morning, because of this thread.

I call dibs on posting about Yacht Rock in the ffa, in the This is Funny thread...

I have a feeling Yacht Rock is probably not new around the ffa... but I just discovered them this weekend and found them to be hilarous. There are quite a few episodes. Here is episode 1. Language and some material NSFW.

Didn't get a single reply in there. There was a picture of a bear falling out of a tree a few posts after this one. It was tough to compete with.

Just got this in my inbox. Good timing. Might need to throw on the captain's hat and head on out with some Steely Dan queued up. Of course, it will probably be about 50 degrees on the bay...

Golly I didnt know all the songs I liked had an awesome sub genre nomenclature.

Walter Egan, CBB and Gerry Rafferty are my ####. If only you could incorporate ELO.

Great list Vike. Not sure Brian Ferry qualifies, but I'll allow it. I considered Spandau, but consider both them and Roxy more on the new wave spectrum.

My list is 76 songs, but I don't have a good amount of yours. Trying to figure out what I have that you don't.

Theres a local cover band here in atlanta that plays all over called the Yacht Rock Revue www.pleaserock.com you can probably just steal their playlist.

I know what you mean. For some reason this music gives me flashbacks to 8 years old sitting in my bedroom in the middle of the summer with no AC on, a headache, and nothing to do.

Southern Cross - Crosby, Stills & Nash
Not Yacht Rock. Yacht Rock has very distinct qualities:Songs referencing nautical or beach/island cultureSmooth lyricsSmooth instrumentalsOne of the most underrated comedy web series ever.
 hitting the brown liquor early clifford? This song is about sailing in the southern hemisphere. The "southern cross" is a constellation that is one of th most visble constellations when sailing in thsouthern hemisphere/tropics.
Got out of town on a boatGoin' to Southern islands.Sailing a reachBefore a followin' sea.She was makin' for the tradesOn the outside,And the downhill runTo Papeete.Off the wind on this headingLie the Marquesas. We got eighty feet of the waterline.Nicely making way.In a noisy bar in AvalonI tried to call you.But on a midnight watch I realizedWhy twice you ran away.ChorusThink about how many timesI have fallenSpirits are using melarger voices callin'.What heaven brought you and meCannot be forgotten.I have been around the world,Lookin' for that woman/girl,Who knows love can endure. And you know it will. And you know it will. When you see the Southern CrossFor the first timeYou understand nowWhy you came this way'Cause the truth you might be runnin' fromIs so small. But it's as big as the promiseThe promise of a comin' day.So I'm sailing for tomorrowMy dreams are a dyin'.And my love is an anchor tied to youTied with a silver chain.I have my shipAnd all her flags are a flyin'She is all that I have leftAnd music is her name.ChorusThink about how many timesI have fallenSpirits are using melarger voices callin'.What heaven brought you and meCannot be forgotten.I have been around the world,Lookin' for that woma/girl,Who knows love can endure. And you know it will. And you know it will.So we cheated and we liedAnd we testedAnd we never failed to failIt was the easiest thing to do.You will survive being bested.Somebody fineWill come alongMake me forget about loving you.At the Southern Cross.

Does not have the distinctive smooth sound. Very folky. You're right about the lyrics, but I sure as hell don't consider John the Fisherman by Primus to be Yacht Rock.

Thanks for this, friend!
Saw them a couple weeks ago in Nashville. They were good and it was a fun time. Walter Egan was with them for about 4 songs including his hit "Magnet and Steel".

Smooth times.

Oooh, that's a good one.

On a side note, I'll never forget the time some guy walked into the bar during the Auburn/Oregon Nat'l Championship Game and proceeded to play some Steely Dan to set the mood. That was odd.
