Young DEs (1 Viewer)

I have been waitnig on these two since drafting them two years ago.

Is 2006 the year that DE's Tony Hargrove and Kenechi Udezi step up an get some sacks and tackles or will they continue to only flash potential and get meaningless write ups about how good they might be later.

Same can be said abuot Jerome McDougal but i never drafted that guy :wall:

I like Hargrove for some odd reason. He hasn't shown too much thus far, but I picked him up in a dynasty league and think this will be his year if any.

Im not sure about Udeze. I like Erasmus on the other side. He's quick.

If we only knew...all we can do is project based on what we've already seen.Hargrove is really raw and was knocked for having an attitude problem in the past, but the light really seemed to go on for him during the second half of 2005. He was a monster at year's end. There hasn't been much talk (either way) in camp about how he's doing. Adenayju is turning heads on the second team, though. I targeted Hargrove as a breakout candidate so I'm back on the bandwagon.Udeze is a bit different case. He's a clearly more polished player, but has had two fairly significant injuries for a pass rusher -- messed up shoulder and a knee injury that required microfracture surgery. He hasn't had success over any extended stretch yet, so he's more difficult to trust as a breakout candidate but the potential is there. He's in a scheme that expects its ends to provide most of the pass rush so it's sink or swim for him. He should benefit from a defensive line without a weak link with Erasmus James on the other side and Kevin Williams at one of the tackles. I'm no Carnac the Magnificent though. For now, I'd rather have Hargrove but I wouldn't fault anyone who argued that Udeze was the more likely stud-in-waiting.

:goodposting: Udeze has all the tools he needs to succeed. The only questions for me are whether his injuries have diminished him to the point where he's not valuable in FF, and whether he's capable of putting those tools together at the NFL level, which we haven't seen because of those injuries.

Despite being burned by Hargrove last season (I dropped him after the slow start so I guess I was doubleburned), I'd still take him ahead of Udeze. I think Kenechi's injury history is too much risk for me to comfortably endorse. However I'd likely take his bookend, Erasmus James, over Hargrove.

I think what pissed me off the most about TH last season was he looked like a beast in preseason. I already had him as a sleeper and bumped him up higher watching him dominate meaningless games. Then the season rolled around and he was as useless as Robert Geathers, who I coincidentally had on the other side. Thank God for VandenBosch and the waiver wire!

I've suffered through two years of Geathers too. :wall:

Anyone have any takes on Erasmus James this year? Some guy in a dynasty league is offering him up for a second round rookie pick of wich I have 2. All ready have Freeney, and Hargrove though so not sure if its worth it to me.

Not a lot of information there, e.g. scoring, # of teams, size of rosters, starting positions, etc. That said, a 2nd rounder seems pretty high for anyone but a premier DE. While James may be pretty good, I'm not sure he fits that category.

:goodposting: I'm not giving up a second round pick for Erasmus James. DEs are too easy to find on the waiver wire in most leagues. Not real happy with Freeney (reputation >>> boxscore) and Hargrove (needs to prove that the last four weeks of 2005 are the real Hargrove not the rest of the prior two seasons) though. James would give you another option to decrease your variance. Depending on who else is available and your scoring system, you might counter with a lesser pick or other option.

The talk about Hargrove seems misplaced to me. He was DE28 last season, his first starting. He was within 5.5 points of 18th place (Dwight Freeney, considered a premiere DE).

We'll see what he does this season, but I'm expecting another improvement with Little rebounding on the other side.

As for EJames, I like the guy, but I'd certainly take a 2nd round pick for him unless I had serious problems at DE.

2nd round is definitely too rich for James. You'd be paying a high price tag based on James's "potential" which up till now hasn't exactly been showcased consistently.

I'll say this, I like James to improve dramatically this season but I still don't think you should have to pay that price. 2nd round is reserved for DE who already have shown they can post doubledigit sack totals and good tackle numbers.
