What do you think about him/her? What's his/her deal?

I'm going to see Mr. Trott Saturday. He hasn't met met with his constituents in years. He is a lawyer that represented banks in foreclosures (owned a big firm that specialized in it). Spent millions of his own money in 2013 to get elected. I'm not at all sold on this guy. Saturday will be interesting.

Mine is a Republican that has moved up from the state house a couple years ago. I am in Northern Virginia, near DC. VA is in general a Republican state, but the closer to DC you get the more Democrats live, she only won by 6% overall, so it was close.

She has been running into a huge amount of people who are unhappy with her walking the party line. She has been skipping out on public meetings and other events because she is either afraid of what might happen or people are proving her right. Funny event where she leaves a St. Patty's Day parade because someone was handing out 'Missing Person' posters with her on them.

She is in for a fun race next time, as people are already lining up to run against her.

Don't have one at the moment.  It was Mick Mulvaney, whom Trump tapped for something or other.

Like most folks around here, he is a tea-party style Republican with all of that, but if you are a conspiracist, he's a guy to keep your eye on.  Born in Alexandria, VA, went to college @ Georgetown, but happened to be from un-incorporated part of SC.  Just saying -dude seems awfully DC connected for a local boy.

He made a ton of money in real estate development and got out just before the collapse, leaving a huge neighborhood partially developed with shoddy streets that the county had to pick up the tab on.

Lynn Jenkins - short republican lady in her last term.  She votes the way the Koch Brothers tell her to.  God I hope Kansas wakes up soon.

I recently went from one of the most democratic districts in the country to the most republican(AL district 7 to 6).  My new rep, Gary Palmer, is pretty new, so not a lot on his resume yet.  He talks a good game, though. Previous rep, Terri Sewell, was also pretty invisible.  Nice lady, but she's on the bottom of the minority party.

So pretty much meh overall.

That's the dooshbag budget director who just said we're not spending money on climate change anymore.

Kevin Yoder.  Former KU Student Body President and KU Law School graduate.  Career politician - elected to state legislature while still in his 20s, in 4th term in Congress in his early 40s.

The positive - talks a big game about wasteful government spending, introduced bills to cut Congress pay and eliminate the lifetime Congress pension plan, advocate for STEM education & jobs, and funding biomedical research: his district includes the Sprint and Garmin headquarters, so he has a ton of constituents in STEM jobs

The negative - caught skinny-dipping in the Sea Of Galilee while on a congressional trip to Israel; had suspicious driving offense a few years back when he was pulled over for speeding, refused a breathalyzer test, allowed to drive himself home and story kinda went away

Been to his office a few times.  Will be part of a group speaking to his local office staff soon about Yoder's support of an education bill that among other things would de-fund special education.  He's vulnerable in 2018 and I hope he loses.

Can't remember my guys name. Bunch of my neighbors went to his town hall. He's a liberal who's been in office 30-40 years, his district is the west side of Manhattan & parts of gentrified Brooklyn. He's probably aligned with my progressive leanings, but it's so one-sided locally I'm not really engaged. ASIDE - I contributed weekly to Bernie & volunteered for a phone bank 3 times; my first political contributions & 1st time volunteering.

In our voting precinct - two 46 story towers in our complex plus a couple blocks of low rise townhouses - the vote on November 8 was HRC - 1170, Trump 20. That's 58.5:1.

Forgive for not being interested in what's happening locally.

ETA: Jerrold Nadler (1992-present); before that he was a NYS Asseblyman for 16 years. Last Republican from our district was over a century ago.

Adam Schiff! :pickle:

The Unlikely Liberal Hero Adam Schiff Is Ready to Investigate Trump

On Monday, March 20th, the House intelligence committee will hold its first open hearing on Russia’s meddling in the 2016 Presidential campaign. Because Republican leaders in the House and Senate have blocked any attempt at forming an independent committee modelled on the bipartisan 9/11 Commission to dig into the Russian cyber attack, the intelligence committee’s investigation may be the only chance Americans have at receiving a comprehensive report on the breadth of the Russian hacking.

The top Democrat on the committee is Adam Schiff, a congressman from Los Angeles who was first elected in 2000. Before the election of Donald Trump, Schiff was known in Washington as a milquetoast moderate. But, appalled by Trump’s muted response to the Russian attack, Schiff has emerged as an unlikely face of Democratic resistance to the new President, using his position on the intelligence committee to pursue an investigation of the Russian influence campaign, its potential links to Trump and his associates, and how America should respond. He’s convinced that the Democrats won’t be the last American victims of the Russians. “One of the things that the intelligence community concluded was that there will be a next time,” he told me on Monday. “They will do this again.”

Despite his understated reputation, Schiff has gained a quiet respect among foreign-policy liberals and reporters for his nuanced views on surveillance, war powers, and press freedoms. He championed reform of the Patriot Act after the revelations by Edward Snowden about the N.S.A.’s bulk collection of metadata. He pushed for a new, more tailored war authorization against Al Qaeda to replace the overly expansive one put in place after 9/11. And he has been outspoken on free-press issues, both in the United States and abroad.

In response to the Russian hacks, Schiff’s preference was to have an outside investigation. The 9/11 Commission, run by Tom Kean, the former Republican governor of New Jersey, and Lee Hamilton, the former top House Democrat on both the intelligence and foreign-affairs committees, was governed by consensus and a strict goal of producing a report that its members, divided between the two parties, could endorse unanimously.

It remains to be seen whether any committee in the hyper-partisan House of Representatives can follow that model. “There’s still a significant question of ultimately whether we’ll be able to complete this investigation the way you should,” Schiff told me. “Certainly people have their skepticism, and the only thing I can say is that I fully believe it’s in the national interest to try. Because the best thing for the country would be for us to reach a common conclusion at the end of the investigation about what took place. And if it ends up being the Democrats issue one report and the Republicans issue another, we won’t have added a lot of value.”

Dana Rohrabacher, "Putin's favorite Congressman:yucky:

Been in office for 18 years, hopefully this is his last term. Historically Republican Orange County voted for a Democrat in the last presidential election for the first time in 80 years, yet somehow he survived.

As soon as he finally holds a town hall I'll be there.

Mick is famous now. Look up the #### he said yesterday about needing to cut meals on wheels because it provides no benefit.

I guess it's Debbie Dingle.  Might be spelled differently.   I think her dad may have been a politician

Looks like she's pro great Lakes.  If Trump gets his way I hope everyone gets used to the taste of Asian Carp

New guy in a newly redrawn district. Former Navy SEAL and sniper so, much respect for his service (and don't think I'll cross him ;) ). He's an (R) but seems to be similar to me in ideology (moderate/centrist). Co-sponsored a bill when at the state level to outlaw discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender ID. Currently co-sponsored bill HR 1227 which would end fed marijuana prohibition.

Sander Levin.  He and his brother Carl have been pretty decent, much better than most politicians.

Trott has voted anti environment but is now "defending" the GL is his tweets. That will definitely be a big topic Saturday.

Glenn "GT" Thompson is my rep. PA-5 is one of the reddest districts in America. He's a backbencher but fairly harmless. I've brought him up here before when @tommyGunZ's friend ran against him - and got smoked twice.

Lamar Smith - Idiot. He's in the house because he's in an unbelievably gerrymandered district. He's Chairman of the Science, Space, and Technology Committee even though he doesn't believe in science because it goes against God. Basically thinks the bible should be the law of the land and actively pursues laws that you would expect in that front. He also refuses to meet with his constituents. Hasn't done it in years.

Will be interesting to see if he can be challenged in 2018. God willing and the creek don't rise, this moron will be back home as a private citizen after the election.

Sam Johnson

Good things: 29-year Air Force veteran. Spent 7 years as POW in Hanoi including 42 months in solitary. Awarded two Silver Stars, two Legions of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, one Bronze Star with Valor, two Purple Hearts, four Air Medals, and three Outstanding Unit Awards.

Not-so-good: He's a Republican from Texas which means there is very little about his policies that I agree with. He is not planning to run for re-election in 2018, though.

My elected officials are mostly gun toting racists who care most about baby jesus and keeping all immigrants out of the country.

Yes, I live in a very Republican area.

No, I don't agree with a lot of their views.

Niki Tsongas...she would be working at IHOP if her last name was Smith instead of Tsongas...
Your IHOP must have a better applicant pool than mine does:

Tsongas spent one year at Michigan State University, then transferred to Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, and graduated in 1968 with a Bachelor of Arts in religion.[3][4] After college she moved to New York City, where she took a job as a social worker for the Department of Welfare.[5] Tsongas earned her Juris Doctor from Boston University and started Lowell's first all-female law practice

Tsongas interned in Arlington, Virginia, for presidential candidate Eugene McCarthy during summer 1967; at a party while there she met Paul Tsongas, then an aide to Republican Congressman Brad Morse.

Sorry...forgot she is a democrat...she is awesome...
Has nothing to do with party.  She went to Smith, got a law degree, started a practice and worked on a presidential campaign.  If that's the kind of person who brings you your Rooty Tooty Fresh 'n Fruity you've got yourself one hell of a restaurant, GB.

Anyone have any questions to maybe ask my Rep? I know Healthcare and Great Lakes things will come up, but I am trying to think of a question that he wouldn't expect- something that might get a more off the cuff and telling answer.

Sorry my comedy did not translate...I will be more literal...

Niki Tsongas who obviously is very book-smart because she had a great academic career is known as a follower who tows the party-line and as seen as a liberal rubber-stamp...outside of that she is far more qualified than any IHOP employee and it is not just because her husband's name carries a tremendous amount of clout in her district...it is because she is wicked smart...

Look into their committee assignments. That's where reps really do their work, on other issues they're not much more than a vote.

Yours appears to be on the Financial Services Committee. Plenty of meat there. They have a hearing scheduled for Tuesday about whether the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection is unconstitutional in its current format and there's a lot of talk about getting rid of the whole agency. You could ask for his thoughts on that and what they will do to protect banking customers if they get rid of it.

Thanks. Considering Trott made somewhere around $50-$100 million representing banks as they foreclosed on Michigan homes during the housing crisis, it seems like he might not be so impartial here.

Looking at bills he has sponsored (https://www.govtrack.us/ is awesome).

1. Bill that prevents a POTUS, VEEP  or Congress member from representing a foreign country designated as being questionable in the area of religious freedom for 10 years. I am fine with that.

2. 5 year ban for lobbying for former Congress members

3. Disapproval of Obama's executive order to give police forces money to arm themselves up like military groups

1 and 2 are in Congress committees now. It doesn't look like anything else he has sponsored has gone anywhere. They were efforts to have Congress investigate the repair of Christian sites in Egypt (weird). Anti-organ trafficking bill. A call for immediate action to help those in Iraq and Syria who were facing a dire situation (Sep 2015). That could be an interesting conversation. I am curious what his refugee, travel ban opinion, etc.

He has mostly been below the 25th percentile for missed votes, that is good. He has had a lot of bipartisan support on the few bills he has proposed, but he has had trouble getting a lot of co-sponsors- hence his failure at getting anything passed. The guy seems ok. Moderate guy. Hasn't been very successful, but also isn't proposing insane things.

Interesting question.  Did not know that much about mine: Dwight Evans.  It is a funny district that is primarily urban, but has a pocket of old-money suburbs.  Career politician in the state house.  On the agriculture and small business subcommittees, though not much track record as he only got elected in November.  He had been appointed the prior year when our previous rep was charged with fraud, racketeering and corruption and sentenced to 10 years in prison.  So he is going to have a long way to go to be any worse.

Could play the outfield like nobody's business, too.

Nancy Pelosi.

She's the last survivor of the Burton machine that ran the SF Democratic party for decades.  CA-12 has moved way to the left of Madame Pelosi but she's too rich and powerful to be primaried.  When she retires, it's going to be fascinating to see who succeeds her.

Great arm

Freshman Congressman Tom Suozzi.  We know each other pretty well, he knows my family/parents very well.  Was the Mayor of the City on Long Island (Glen Cove) where I grew up next to, and recently lived for that past 12 years before moving to Dallas.

He was our County Executive for two terms.  I've liked him generally as a person, but he is a politician to the core - not a bad guy, but just a bit too slick at times for his own good. He as a good heart, truly wants to help people, but has some strong narcissistic tendencies as well, and is not a man of detail and follow through. That was a huge hinderance as a County Executive, but his style and strengths are perfect for Congress (and yes, that's a backhanded compliment I suppose).

FWIW, I have cautioned against electing him for certain things in the past due to what I stated above, but was a supporter for his run for Congress.  He's left of me certainly, somewhat of a Kennedy type Democrat, but was the best option of those running and it's not as if we had any legitimate Libertarian alternative.

His predecessor, whom I know well also (although only through the last 10 years through my involvement with downtown redevelopment and the like) was Steve Israel, who has been chair of the DCCC a few years back.  While still a bit to my left, Steve is one of the most critical thinkers I know, and has embraced policy positions from the "other" side when he felt it made sense. Steve also was fairly good at working across the aisle, and had an exceptional relationship with the President (in fact, at more than one state of the union, when Obama walked down the hallway after his speech, it was he, Biden and Steve Israel along with him).  Steve also gave me a really good book to read on the history of infrastructure called Bold Endeavors, as infrastructure investment as big for him... he was also very involved at high levels of national security issues.  On infrastructure, he was big on the idea of a national infrastructure bank and finding ways to rework the tax code to avoid companies sheltering billions in profits oversees, in a manner whereby they would repatriate at a "reduced" rate (say 15%) as compared to capital gains or corporate taxes, and those dollars would be earmarked to fund the initial launch of the infrastructure bank.

NO idea who my new rep is here in Texas, but as I'm in Dallas I assume has to be a Dem, and probably at least as left as the two above, probably moreso.

Hot to Trott  Town Hall

The district is probably the most affluent and best educated district in Michigan. It's a purple district that leans socially liberal but economically conservative.

Showed up about 7:00 AM (doors to open at 8:00) and we were one of the first 30 people in line.  Crowd is friendly. People are passing out American flags, passing around nametags to write your zip code on, people had free donuts, bagels, etc. It was snowing sooo hard. We were soaking wet by the time the doors to the place open. No signs or even umbrellas are allowed inside.

When I get in, there are already about 40 people already seated. They are totally dry (MAGA hats on some, clearly hooked up donors or fanboys). When we asked how they got in without waiting in line, they were cagey. One guy just said he snuck in the back door. Suuure. The placed held 400 but there were hundreds more that couldn't be let it and they protested outside.

Trott was very negative on Trump. He thinks Trump is very risky especially with diplomacy. He said he did not understand what King said and doesn't see any legitimate point in what King said. His main points was ACA is failing so he will vote for AHCA because while not good, it is an improvement. He said EPA needs some cuts but the current budget is too dramatic in it's EPA cuts and he promised he would not vote yes unless changes are made to protect the Great Lakes. He is very concerned about the aging oil pipelines that run through the Great Lakes and the fact they are basically only regulated/maintained by the private company that owns them.

Anyway, I didn't agree with him on everything but he seemed very reasonable and won me over. The crowd on the other was deplorable. They booed him at every turn- even when he was making points they agreed with. Everyone had these red cards they would hold up when he said something they didn't like. There were chants of "Shame! Shame!" "You're fired! You're fired" and so on. He was constantly being cut off by people yelling. It was absurd. Let the guy answer the questions people are asking.

Here is a story and a video of the chanting nuts.

There are legit complaints. He hasn't been very available to his constituents. He scheduled this thing with 3 days notice and then they acted like there was no where bigger to hold the event. Also it was just an hour. He probably did very little to appease critics with this small, short meeting.

One interesting moment was a guy stood up and demanded to be heard. He said his 20 something year old son had cancer. Now his son has a pre-existing condition and the dad is worried his son won't be able to get health coverage. The father said he has been trying for months to get to talk with Trott. Trott told him to speak with so and so. The guy said Trott's people blow him off. So Trott pulled out his phone, took the guys number and made an appointment to meet with him on Monday.

Duncan Hunter. Veteran, very conservative (I have lived in many places, but none even remotely as conservative as this place in California.)

Anyway, he's the guy that introduced the women in combat bill that was designed to show hypocrisy among feminists but instead, was voted into law (I believe.)

HE'S your rep?  Wow.  And I thought mine was bad.  John Culberson has been in the House since 2001.  What a waste of space.  As someone wrote in a letter to the editor of the Houston Chronicle a couple of weeks ago, he has never done anything at all except get re-elected.  What a doosh.
