It's not the worst thing that could happen. He's young and pitched 188 innings last year between AAA and the Majors. If Gallardo misses the start of the season, it could keep his IP down and help him in September.
This all assumes somebody else steps up in Spring and Gallardo makes a full recovery.
The Brewers are concerned Yovani Gallardo might have torn cartilage in his right knee.
GM Doug Melvin said Gallardo felt discomfort in the knee after a throwing session a couple of days ago and the knee swelled up afterward. If Gallardo has torn cartilage and needs surgery, he'd require three or four weeks off. That'd put him on the DL for a couple of weeks to begin the season. It wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing for the Brewers. They probably don't want him throwing more than 200 innings in the regular season anyway.
sure, the limit on the innings would be great. My concern is that leg injuries tend to lead to arm injuries as guys sometimes alter deliveries and the arm pays for it. I'm cool with him missing all of April if he can come back 100% from it.
Manny Parra watch is definitely on, but it isn't like the Brewers are hurting for pitching. They have a ton of it and were actually looking to deal away a starter.
