Dolphins' Thomas may have concussion, could skip Jets game

DAVIE — Dolphins linebacker Zach Thomas is being evaluated to determine whether he sustained a mild concussion during Sunday's loss to Dallas.
Thomas, 34, complained of light-headedness after the game and sat out Wednesday and today's practices with a migraine, coach Cam Cameron said.
Cameron said the team will decide Friday whether Thomas will play against the New York Jets.
"There's a chance he might have a slight concussion," Cameron said. "Obviously, we're going to be smart here."
If Thomas can't play, outside linebacker Channing Crowder will move to middle linebacker and Derrick Pope will replace Crowder.
"As you can imagine, the player wants to play," Cameron said. "You know what it means to lose a player like Zach Thomas, but there is a lot bigger picture that we're accountable to."
Descision on Thomas will be made today.Golden said:does anyone have any more info here?
Thomas sat out a second straight day of practice and the team will determine today if he can play Sunday against the New York Jets.
"We're going to be smart here," coach Cam Cameron said. "I really like our approach. All of us coaches have dealt with this over the years. We will be very precautionary."
Thomas, who led the Dolphins with 10 tackles against the Cowboys, complained of lightheadedness after the game. The 12-year veteran has had multiple concussions in the past, including four during a two-week stretch early in his career.

Wow, was i wrong on this one! I guess I need to scramble for a fill-in. I hope this isn't a lingering issue. He's not injured, he sat out of today's practice with a migraine. It's something that's bothered him for years. He'll be fine come Sunday.

Actually this will be Crowder's second opportunity to make an impact at the middle. When Zach missed a few games a year ago Crowder was moved to the middle and his production actually got worse. If memory serves he never cracked 4.5 tackles a game while manning the Mike. The biggest difference I see is that Crowder has already been more productive on the weak side this season than he's been at any point in his young professional career to date, so maybe he's better prepared to make the switch. I drafted Crowder in my startup dynasty draft two seasons ago and patiently waited my time on the guy. I left him unprotected this past offseason and lost him. I made a draft day trade to land Zach Thomas which gave me a solid starting corps at LB. Needless to say this development has me vexed. I'm terribly vexed. This game might give some early indication about Crowder's ability to play the middle when Zach is gone.
Agreed. I've been waiting for this for two and a half years after drafting him. The irony is that I've picked up enough other talent at LB that he's like my 6th choice. This game might give some early indication about Crowder's ability to play the middle when Zach is gone.
First practices are late Wednesday mornings usually. We often don't get any real indication about potential game time decisions until after the Friday practice. If he's cleared for full pads today, it's obviously a good sign. If he's not, it won't be a big deal until Friday, like last week.Whats the deal with Zach? will he play this week?
Unfortunately, I'm without the NFL network and DirecTV so I'm limited to the network games and whatever I can see on SopCast and the highlight shows.I think Crowder has looked better than he had in prior seasons when I've seen him in the preseason and against Dallas.Jene, did you watch the game? What did you think of Crowder's performance?
Crowder 6 tackles, 3 assists. Not bad, but hasn't relegated ZT yet.Unfortunately, I'm without the NFL network and DirecTV so I'm limited to the network games and whatever I can see on SopCast and the highlight shows.I think Crowder has looked better than he had in prior seasons when I've seen him in the preseason and against Dallas.Jene, did you watch the game? I see. I've been diappointed with Direct TV's customer service here as of late, I told them they need to get better or I'm going to have to look at other options (I never would leave, unless Sunday Ticket and NFLN were available somewhere else) they keep takin money off my bill and giving me free stuff , been with them going on 13 years, so they treat me pretty good. My suggestion ... bury the cable. Think how much more enlightening you would be with those tools at your disposal.Jene Bramel said:Rozelle said:Jean I'm surprised you don't have Direct TV/Sunday Ticket. No way to get satellite reception with the trees around the house and stuck with Time Warner as the only cable option.
Sunday Ticket would be nice, but not having the NFL Network is really painful. With every passing week, I get closer to burying about 100 feet of coax through the wooded area to a post with a dish on it and living with the squirrel outages.![]()
have they actually tried Jene?the reason i say this is because they told my father after coming out and climbing up one side of the house that there was "no way" to get reception thru the mammoth oak trees and he just accepted itthen a family friend who was in the business happened by one day and said that he should just try and see from every vantage point they could find on the houseand they did and it found the signalor failing that, getcher chainsaw out cause NFLN is worth itNo way to get satellite reception with the trees around the house

Probably playing it safe early. Projections are updated each night.Latest word is that Thomas has yet to be cleared to play but it appears he's passing the first tests post-concussion. He apparently split snaps at MLB yesterday with Crowder, which suggests that he had no new symptoms after working on the side Wednesday and was cleared for contact yesterday. If he checks out and practices today, he should be good to go. He'll may still be left as a gametime decision, but I think we should be able to make a pretty solid determination after practice today.Any news on Zach?Norton's projections have him inactive right now with Crowder being the top LB this week. Obviously this will change if Thomas plays. Does Norton know something or is he just guessing at this point?
Thomas wants to play, but doctors may say no

Dolphins linebacker Zach Thomas, shown tackling Cowboys running back Marion Barber, slept in a hyperbaric chamber this week in hopes of playing Sunday, but doctors likely won't clear him. Dolphins linebacker Zach Thomas slept in his hyperbaric chamber every night this week and has switched helmets to maximize the possibility of playing against the Oakland Raiders on Sunday.
''I don't know if it will help,'' Thomas admitted Friday. ``Can't hurt.''
Thomas wants to play against the Raiders despite still nursing the effects of a concussion. He will speak to doctors again today and they will decide his availability for the game.
The doctors are expected to tell Thomas to sit out a second consecutive week barring a dramatic improvement by the player over a 24-hour span.
Channing Crowder took a majority of the snaps at middle linebacker Friday and is expected to start in place of Thomas, who is officially listed as questionable by the team.
In addition to missing Thomas, Miami's leading tackler eight of the past nine seasons, the Miami defense might have some turnover in the secondary as well. Safety Travares Tillman, who is nursing a knee injury, was limited in practice for a second consecutive day Friday.
Tillman, who became a starter when Yeremiah Bell was lost for the season with an Achilles' injury in the season-opener, is listed as questionable.
Donovin Darius, signed Sept. 11 to fill the void created by Bell, would start for Tillman.
Coach Cam Cameron said Darius ''really is'' 100 percent immersed in Miami's defensive scheme despite being with the team slightly more than two weeks.
''From the day I got here, my mentality was to learn as much as I can as fast as I can,'' Darius said. ``I just thank God He gave me the ability to absorb the information and go out there and perform.''
Darius is helped by the fact he played for Dolphins defensive coordinator Dom Capers from 1999-2000 when the coach was in Jacksonville. Darius has started 115 games, all with Jacksonville, in his 10-year career.
''It helps,'' Darius said. ``We'll see what happens Sunday.''
I'd like to know as well.Is Z. Thomas a go for week 5?will he play this sunday?
bumpMy team with Crowder has big bye week and injury problems, so I'd love to know whether I should play him. Anyone heard anything new on Thomas?Edit to add that Crowder is questionable too, so any info there would also be appreciated.for sunday status
